See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Just 45 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, the coastal wilderness trails of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area seem like a world away. Breathe fresh sea air while you cultivate awareness of the natural world with an experienced naturalist and familiarize yourself with a magnificent network of hiking trails in landscapes ranging from tranquil canyons, bluffs and beaches to waterfalls, caves and mountains.

Highlights

• Hike in Arroyo Sequit, Topanga and Temescal canyons, Malibu Creek, Will Rogers and Point Mugu state parks, and Leo Carillo State Beach, all part of the Backbone Trail system.
• Learn the cultural history of the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu, which were home to the Chumash tribe and have represented locations from Shangri-La to South Korea in film and TV.
• Eat s’mores around the campfire, enjoy a chocolate tasting, experience the thrill of a ropes course and more.

Activity Notes

Hiking 7-9 miles per day with elevation gains up to 1500 ft.
