Program #21003ENZ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Program intended for grandchildren from 9 - 12 years of age.

Bring to life America's naval and maritime history as you and a grandchild take part in a hands-on learning adventure at the site of the world’s naval base: Norfolk, Va. Join the crew of a tall ship and raise the sails, and explore the decorated Iowa-class battleship USS Wisconsin. Cruise past the U.S. fleet in port at the Norfolk Naval Base and learn the role played by the world’s largest estuary — historic Chesapeake Bay — in the development of our nation's navy.

Highlights

• Come aboard a tall ship to learn how to set the sails, navigate and steer.
• Visit the U.S. Naval Base at Norfolk by land then cruise past the American fleet in harbor to inspect the dozens of battleships and other vessels homeported at the base.
• Explore the ecology and aquatic life of the Chesapeake at the Newport News Mariner Museum and at Nauticus, an interactive science and technology center that explores the power of the sea.

Activity Notes

Walking and standing two miles per day, moving about on motorized vessels and sailboats underway.

Coordinated by Road Scholar.
