ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Program date intended for grandparents, their children and grandchildren ages 9 - 14.

Why’s the ocean blue? Is a sponge actually alive? Have questions like these answered when you share a week of fun exploration and learning on this family adventure. This course offers a chance for hands-on excitement as together you analyze creek water, pull in a net full of wriggling creatures or examine the life in a drop of sea water. Visit the picturesque Chincoteague and Assateague Islands, learn about local history and legends and experience firsthand the delicacy and beauty of these coastal environments.

Highlights

• Go close up on the prehistoric horseshoe crab to explore this amazing creature’s significance to modern medicine.
• Here’s something to sniff at: Learn how to identify a pig fish and smell productive salt marshes.
• Climb aboard a research vessel to cruise through a beautiful salt marsh and take part in an otter trawl to collect fascinating marine organisms.

Activity Notes

Walking up to a half-mile over varied terrain, through water; getting on/off bus.
