Program #12378ENZ
4 Days | 3 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Delaware has been a strategic point of military defense for the United States since the country’s very beginnings — from the American Revolution to World War II and beyond. Take a fresh look into the military history of “The First State” as historians and military experts share their insight into the military intelligence and espionage during the Revolutionary War, the role that Delaware played during the Civil War as a defending state of the Union bordered by Confederate states, and the threat posed by German U-boats along the coast of Lewes during WWII. Consider the roles played by female spies during each of these conflicts, and learn how their efforts contributed to the politics and outcomes of each war.

Highlights

• Join a docent for a historical exploration of Lewes, and learn about Delaware’s little-known role in keeping the Union whole during the Civil War.
• Discover Delaware’s involvement in WWII during a field trip to Fort Miles, one of the strongest coastal forts ever built and the largest of the East Coast combat-ready posts.
• Consider the role of women in espionage during WWII and beyond as you take in insightful lectures and a living history performance.

Program Notes

This is an updated version of Delaware During WWII: On the Front Lines and Women Spies. It will be focused on Delaware's role in various wars and the role its female spies played throughout American history.

Activity Notes

Participants must be able to climb some stairs, stand for up to an hour, get on and off a motor coach, and walk a few blocks in and out of doors.
