Program #11104ENZ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Challenging
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Amid the now tranquil fields, rock fences and streams of tiny Sharpsburg, Md., once laid 23,000 dead or wounded Civil War soldiers. At Antietam, the National Park Service is working to restore the landscape to its appearance on the day of the battle in 1862. The battlefield offers a unique opportunity to accomplish this goal because the land within and surrounding it has remained largely rural and agricultural.

Highlights

• Assist with removal of vegetation to restore historic field areas, fence maintenance and various work activities at one of the historic homesteads featured in the battle.
• Learn the story of the single bloodiest day in U.S. history, the Battle of Antietam.
• A living history presentation gives you a glimpse into the experience of a Civil War soldier.

Activity Notes

Active outdoor work 4-6 hours a day on uneven terrain. Be in good physical condition. Many lectures take place off-site at the field work areas.

Coordinated by Shepherd's Spring Outdoor Ministry Center.
