ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Immerse yourself in the culture of Appalachia as you examine its deep roots in tradition and family and learn about simple mountain living. Take daily walks to appreciate this ancient landscape, enjoy the quiet solitude of its diverse forests and meandering streams, and sit on top of its impressive overlooks as you learn more of the natural history of the Appalachian Mountains.

Highlights

• Join an eclectic mix of storytellers, musicians, poets and artisans as they share their traditional tales, folk wisdom, stories, poems and crafts that spring from the Appalachian experience, as well as music that is deeply rooted in mountain tradition.
• Enjoy expert presentations on Appalachian poetry, storytelling, music making and crafting.
• Hike two miles round trip with naturalists to Bald Knob, at 4,365 feet the highest point at Mountain Lake.

Activity Notes

Minimal walking and standing for most program days. Nature hike on Day 3 involves a hike of approximately 2 miles on flat dirt road through hardwood forest.

Coordinated by The Mountain Lake Conservancy.
