EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Few have ever experienced “roughing it” like the wealthy businessmen of the Gilded Age, who turned the quiet wilderness of the Adirondacks into a haven for the rich and famous. Today, Great Camp Sagamore, once the summer home of the Vanderbilts, remains an icon of the early Adirondack lifestyle — and is the perfect location to study this opulent era. Join historians for a look into the lives of these famous camp owners, their well-known guests and the workers who maintained their lavish properties. Then, gain an appreciation for the region’s natural treasures as naturalists share their insight on the ecology of the Adirondack Forest Preserve, Lake Sagamore and Raquette Lake.

Highlights

• Learn about the Vanderbilt’s Sagamore and its neighbors, such as J.P. Morgan’s Camp Uncas and Pine Knot — all designed by William West Durant.
• Get a fresh perspective of the great camp properties during a study cruise along Raquette Lake.
• Canoe or hike around Sagamore Lake and discover the biodiversity of the Adirondack Forest Preserve.

Program Notes

Included is a special visit to Camp Pine Knot, the first "great camp" built by William West Durant, and in many ways the very prototype of what has come to be referred to as "Adirondack rustic" architecture. Owned and operated by Cortland State College as Camp Huntington (after former owner Collis P. Huntington), the camp is not accessible to the general public, but is being made available by the owners for Road Scholar.

Activity Notes

Walking over uneven terrain, some stairs; canoe and boat rides.

Date Notes
6/16/2013
Please note that June is black fly season in the Adirondacks. Although Sagamore will provide bug jackets and insect repellent, please prepare accordingly.

Coordinated by Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks.
