Road Scholar
Program #1061ENZ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
The Colorado River cuts a path from snowy Rocky Mountain peaks to the plateaus and deserts of the American Southwest, profoundly impacting this region and its inhabitants. Hear about John Wesley Powell’s river exploration and heroics, gain insight into Native American culture, and marvel at the Navajo sandstone and region’s geologic wonders. Immerse yourself in this stunning red rock and blue water landscape during two spectacular boating adventures.

Highlights

• Take a smooth-water raft trip between the towering, 800-foot Navajo sandstone cliffs of Glen Canyon on the Colorado River.
• Enjoy a day-long voyage across Lake Powell to the world’s largest natural bridge, Rainbow Bridge National Monument: 290 feet high and 275 feet across.
• Explore the sinuous depths of upper Antelope Canyon, the most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest.

Program Notes

In 2014 groups will also visit Antelope Canyon, the most photographed slot canyon in the Southwest, with a Navajo guide. Its Navajo name is Tse' bighanilini, "the place where water runs through rocks."

Activity Notes

Walking up to one and a half miles. Getting in and out of rafts. Elevations up to 4,300 feet.

Coordinated by Northern Arizona University.
