Every day this program offered new delights which I thoroughly enjoyed. The island of Puerto Rico has great history, culture and scenic beauty. I appreciated all the variety in the program, it was a great introduction to the highlights of the island. Favorite visits for me included El Morro and San Cristobal forts in San Juan which were absolutely amazing structures; exploring the historic cities of Old San Juan and Ponce with their amazing architecture; Las Cabezas Nature Preserve, Buena Vista Coffee Plantation and the Castle Serralles. Every place we visited was worthwhile and very interesting with expert guides. The hotels were in a perfect location in Old San Juan and Ponce and were very nice accommodations. I loved being able to walk and explore neighborhoods and attractions from the hotels. (I stayed an extra day and night in Old San Juan after the program ended and I recommend this as there is so much to see and do there). The food was always great and I enjoyed being able to try a variety of Puerto Rican specialties. The weather was perfect and I loved all the changes that tropical weather brings. The other group participants were a pleasure to get to know, we had a great group. Our group leader, Alberto was fantastic; personable, well-organized, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, funny and caring. He ensured that everyone had a great experience. His assistant Andrea was also a great asset; friendly, very pleasant and helpful. I can't say enough good things about both of them. I am so glad that I chose this program and came home with many wonderful memories of my time in Puerto Rico. Thank you to Road Scholar and our group leaders for providing this special experience for me. I was truly blessed!

Alberto Mendez was a wonderful guide, always pleasant but at the same time doing the job. Andrea, his assistant, was also very hard working. The contrast between San Juan and Ponce was interesting. It's a good introduction to Puerto Rico.

Alberto was a wonderful guide, the island is beautiful and varied, with a lot to see in a rather small place. Old San Juan was a fun and interesting place to roam, especially if you like hills!

Alberto Melendez is an outstanding group leader, and the program is excellent. Highly recommended.

Everything was well organized and we were well informed about each site we visited. The video we saw in El Yunke was excellent, however the time on the trail was disappointing. I wish we could have spent more time there. Also, we learned a lot about the history of Puerto Rico, but I missed what I usually enjoyed on Road Scholar trips: we did not meet with any of the local Puerto Ricquenos to talk to them about their lives there. I want to go back to the warm weather!

Alma from Pelham, NY Number of programs attended: 5

Our tour guide, all docents and lecturers were native Puerto Rican, all experts in their fields of presentation. As a Puerto Rican myself, I enjoyed the opportunity to talk with them and found this especially increased my enjoyment of the tour. It made me proud to be Puertorriquena!

Kathryn from Harrisburg, PA Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 11/02/14 - 11/09/14
This trip gave me an insight to Puerto Rico, it's culture and environment, that exceeded my expectations.

My sister and really enjoyed this tour. Especially the art museums and Old San Juan Tour. The hotel accomodations were right where they should be. The tour guide leader - Alberto Melendez was OUTSTANDING! If you have the opportunity to join Alberto - you will be joining the best. He made the trip for us. Always went above and beyond for the group's enjoyment...and he's very funny!

An enjoyable program. Alberto was great, friendly, helpful and very informative. The food was good, especially the fish cakes in the Museum's restaurant in Old San Juan.

Great program. I knew little about Puerto Rico and its culture and history and now feel I am much more familiar with it. I plan to return again.

Alberto was great! Listening devices - excellent idea - program was interesting. Restaurant choices were good - food was tasty and root vegetables will now be something I will be cooking regularly. Thanks again, Alberto, for all your knowledge sharing, food recommendations and your caring that we all had a good program experience.

A welcome winter break and one that provides educational input as well as recreational possibilities with delicious meals added. The tour directors were particularly good.

This was one of the beset Elderhostel-Road Scholar programs I have attended, and that's saying a lot, as I've enjoyed all of them. Alberto is a wonderful group leader -- well-organized, well-informed, personable, helpful -- I can't say enough about him! We saw a lot of Puerto Rico and learned a lot about the country and the culture. Such diversity -- mountains, rain forest, nature preserve, historic mansions, museums, restaurants featuring local food, and more.

Our leader Alberto Melendez is simply great--always enthusiastic. The variety of restaurants is wonderful as is the food. We saw the natural wonders of Puerto Rico, its many cultural sites, and got the flavor of two cities of different sizes. The Ponce hotel is a bit uncomfortable. Wear cotton shirts for the humidity. Be aware--Puerto Rico has many stray, starving dogs as does much of the Caribbean. I expected better here as it is the United States. These animals need help. Something needs to be done about the problem and it does tend to leave a sad visual memory of a beautiful place.
