This was an amazing experience, thanks to the warm and friendly Cuban people and the superb Road Scholar guides. Our guide told us that in Cuba they say: where there is a problem, there is a mojito. We said: where there is a problem, there are Road Scholar guides Lana and Jose Luis, and they make everything turn out wonderfully well.

John from Saint Louis, MO Number of programs attended: 1

The people to Cuba program truly exceeded our expectations! Our tour leaders of Lana and Jose were 2 of the most caring, thorough, organized and fun people we have ever met on any other tours! Cuba now is a country that is changing, albeit very slowly, and to be able to experience it at this juncture in history is amazing!

I had never been on a tour before and only to get to Cuba did I consider one. This trip exceeded all my expectations. It was relaxing and energizing every day all day.

This trip by far exceeded my expectations. It was so well planned out and organized. The hotels and food was very good. The tour guide and tour leader worked very well together and answered all the questions. Great bus and bus driver. I am very happy that I took this trip and hope I can return with RS>

Just go! Cuba is fascinating and is at a historical crossroads. We learned so much and had a great time doing it. Talk about unplugging, the internet is very very limited - you can do it!

Freida from Charleston, SC Number of programs attended: 6

RS trip to Cuba was an experience that stretched my mind and filled my heart through interaction with the Cuban people. I came away with a better understanding of the history and culture of Cuba and current US/Cuba relations. During our stay, we were treated to delightful performances by dancers, singers, & musicians along with visits to museums, paladars, artisan markets, and much more. The food and fellowship with our group is also a memory to treasure. I highly recommend this program.

Jean from Columbia, SC Number of programs attended: 3

This program captures the essence of RS travels... it is only the beginning of my desire to know more about this country. Thanks to Marie Elena, our guide, who gave practical guidance and some itinerary tweaking to get us to all planned site visits. Great group of fellow travelers with pertinent observations and questions added to an unforgettable experience. Looking forward to future travels.

I refer to this trip as my Cuban Adventure. My brain is filled up with so many things that I want to know more about. Where we stayed in Cienfuegos was an extremely peaceful place. I know there has been a lot of stress on the Cuban people for generations yet they seemed to be very happy overall. I hope to return to Cuban again.

"Eye Opener" is the phrase that kept recurring, thought by ourselves and heard from others. The usual RS thoughtful and thorough approach to the experience made this both great fun and truly educational. Maria Elena Valdes, our guide, was a key to making it all both intense and relaxed. We did our own tour of Miami's "Little Havana" with David Del Rio before we left, which was really valuable and fun. He and his tour could be a prescribed part of this trip. A practical end note: although active, none of this trip exceeded the capacities of we two octogenarians.

The tour was delightful, with knowledgeable and fun RS guide who definitely earned her money on our trip. Local guides and the Cuban guide who accompanied our tour were friendly and shared freely about their country. Havana was exciting with a lot of history. Loved the classic cars and architecture. The People-to-People experiences with dance troupe, arts school, San Lazario hospital, elderly citizens who danced with us, paladares, swimming in the infamous Bay of Pigs at Playa Largo were highlights. People were very welcoming and friendly. Our hope is that relations between US and Cuba will open up in the near future. Thanks RS for a great tour - highly recommended to others.

The Cuba trip to Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad and Santa Clara was excellent - about 1/3 of our group were women traveling by themselves and we all had a wonderful time - we were just one big family of 24 that mixed and matched when doing before or after hours things like watching the sun rise or going to a late night entertainment in the hotel or the "on your own dinner". I will definitely use Road Scholar again and most likely go to Cuba again. The RS tour guide and the Cuba tour guide and bus driver were amazing.

This program will make you uncomfortably aware of how the United States has interfered with and played a major part in keeping Cuba in the state it is in. But seeing what Cuba as accomplished with so little resources is amazing, incredible, unbelievable. It will astound you!

I no longer receive program notices on the email except for the trips I actually sign up for. My first trip was determined from an email. I have tried to express that I no longer get he program emails but no one listens! Recently I heard a program on NPR telling us about how many trees that were cut for the advertising for Victoria's Secret! I'm thinking that Road Scholar must at least come in second for the amount of trees that are cut for the amount of paper advertising that I receive each week in the mail. Road Scholar needs to address this issue. It would help to cut some very expensive costs for publishing and mailing!

Road Scholar's response:
Dear Judith, we have updated your preferences so that you will receive email updates but not catalogs or brochures. If you ever wish to update these preferences, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-454-5768 and we will be happy to assist!

I was a bit apprensive about this trip before going, because of all of the special arrangements even though we had been to Haiti 18 months before. All of my concerns were unfounded. All arrangements went absolutely smoothly. The entire trip was well planned, well conducted, interesting and enjoyable. All of our staff were most personable and attentive and extremely well informed. The things that stick in my mind are the informative lectures, the arts (especially the music) and the resourcefulness of the people in creating jobs to enhance their resources. I would recommend the trip to anyone who is interested in American History and Cuba's role in it.

The Cuba People to People program was excellent in every way. It was most informative and enjoyable, and our tour guide made the entire visit to Cuba a pleasure. In addition, the food was delicious and the entertainment provided by local musicians at each location was wonderful. We learned a lot during this short period, and made me want to enroll again for comparable trips to Cuba and other locations throughout the world.

The tour that Cuqui and Guillermo provided was an informative, lively, entertaining, and fascinating glimpse of Cuba and its people. Each day was full of intriguing and stimulating visits with a variety of people, sites, and organizations, all designed to broaden and complicate whatever assumptions and preconceptions we might have had while, simultaneously revealing the very real problems and issues that the country endures.

I did't know Americans could go to Cuba before I learned about Road Scholar. I was excited just to be going to Cuba. It was one of the best trips I have ever taken. Cuba is a beautiful country. I gained alot from the learning experiences, meeting Cuban people and hearing more about USA and Cuban relations from Cubans. It was a very active trip with little free time but I wouldn't have wanted to miss out on any of the activities we had. Seeing the dance company, the school for art and music and dance, hearing the choir, meeting Cuban people in their homes, swimming in the Bay of Pigs, the beautiful architecture, the old cars, visiting the senior center and that is just some of what we did. Go to Cuba.

This experience in Cuba was magical, thanks to our leader Cuqui, our Cuban guide Guillermo, our bus driver Rey, and my fellow travelers. All of them are the best. Our experience included expert lecturers who gave us a good overview of Cuba's history and current condition. It also provided a personal view of different parts of the country and delightful personal interactions with Cubans. Our visits with Cubans in various locations, such as homes, schools, restaurants, were so enjoyable and impressive. We talked, we laughed, we sang, we danced, we ate. We fell under the spell of the Cuban music, that I have always loved.

Karen from Mount Holly, VT Number of programs attended: 1

Cuba had long been a subject of fascination for me, and I was worried that the trip would not live up to expectations. In fact, the Cuba Today trip exceeded every expectation. Our coordinator Cuqui was caring, knowledgeable and so well-known in Cuba that our trip was that much more delightful. Guillermo our tour guide was charming, thoughtful and open about life in his beautiful country. Our driver was a magician. The lectures, performances, meals and tours were fascinating, enriching and thought-provoking. As exhausted as I was at the end, it left me wanting more!

Considering the current troubled relationship between the US and Cuba, the Cuban People to People tour is highly recommended. Exposure to Cuban people and outstanding lectures by University of Havana professors helped to clarify the Cuban position for me.

I would encourage everyone to take the trip,to Cuba. It was very enlightening , educational as well as fun. The participants were compatible, the guides extremely well informed, congenial and helpful. The opportunity to visit and see first hand various parts of the culture and economy was priceless. I also had the opportunity, while seeking the perfect espresso and café cubano, to practice español and spanglish with many people. Everyone was reactive to conversation both in English and Spanish. You will never regret this trip. The only regret would not taking it!

Carol from Bloomfield, CT Number of programs attended: 5

This program opened up a part of the world to me that I didn't know existed. It provides food for thought about socialism and capitalism; about the history of Cuba and Cuban-American relations; it allows face to face interactions with people in a third world economy sustaining first world culture.

Vivian from Laguna Woods, CA Number of programs attended: 3

This trip exceeded our expectations. Our guides, Frederica and Alicia, were knowledgeable, gracious, cautious regarding our safety, and lots of fun. I ate my way through Cuba, especially enjoying papaya and mojitos! The music experiences, both dance and vocal, were outstanding. My favorite city is CienFuegos. It is great that we can now visit this "Pearl of the South." Vivian Johnson

If you want to learn about the people of Cuba and their take on the political, social, and economic situation in which they currently find themselves, this is a very good program for you. What I came away with was a clearer understanding that the government of Cuba and the people of Cuba are not quite the same thing.

Susan from Minnetonka, MN Number of programs attended: 3

A wonderful adventure! Very well-run and well-organized trip, and far more eye-opening than most expected. Federica is an exceptional tour leader -- funny, warm, caring, and accommodating. Guide Ilen is a walking encyclopedia of history and culture! A lot is changing in Cuba, but the development and infra-structure challenges remain immense. Do read up on the current situation and the hero status of Che Guevara! Go !

Annette from Surfside, FL Number of programs attended: 3

For anyone interested in history, current events, politics, music and art, this is an experience of a lifetime. Our neighbors, so close and yet so far, share a great deal with us. Visiting the island whose destiny has been shaped by the decades-long US embargo is a top notch lesson in citizenship. Don't miss the Cuba on the brink of great change. See it now so you can have a better appreciation of the inevitable and dramatic changes in the near future,

Cuba Today: People and Society #20437 was my first experience with Road Scholar...but not my last! Lecturers on Cuban affairs were intelligent and informative. Accommodations were more that I expected. And we became a cohesive group under the calm and capable tour leadership of Louis Gabriell Bideau.

My wife and I agree that our trip to Cuba with Road Scholar was definitely one of the best travel experiences in our lifetimes. We thoroughly enjoyed interacting with our fellow Scholars and came away from the trip with a much deeper and better understanding of Cuban society and culture. The icing on the cake was a visit to Cuba Libro, a bookstore/coffee shop operated by an American journalist who lives in Havana with her Cuban husband. The bookstore focuses on books and magazines in English. It appears the locals are responding in a very positive way and are willing to share their individual stories with visitors to Cuba. We spent almost an hour in conversation with a fine young Cuban engineer, for example. Overall, the Road Scholar program was like a post-graduate course served with great food and entertainment.

This program was a life changing experience. The days were packed with exactly what the program promised, a people to people experience. The Cuban people are loving and welcoming of the attention of American people. This opportunity is a two way street for human kindness and understanding. The pace is exhausting, although no one activity is too strenuous. Our RoadScholar leader, Luis Gabriel, is one in a million. The Cuban based tour guide was not at the standard we have learned to expect from RoadScholar. If it were not for Luis, the program could have been a train wreck, but he was able to sustain the usual excellent level of RoadScholar. My conclusion is that interest in Cuba has grown so much that the provider of Cuban guides is having to scrape the barrel to provide people. We had highly professional content providers, each one a star in his or her own field of knowledge. One of the best was an unexpected delight - - - -the fellow who gave us a tour of the Necropolis (national cemetery) ---- now, whoever can make cemeteries funny and entertaining is truly a star! He looked like Barack Obama. The food was incredible; I may have a bias as I was raised in Miami and learned to love Cuban food. Mojitos at every meal (free); what could be better? If you go, you will be lucky to get Luis.

See Cuba before it becomes another tourist island like the rest of them in the Caribbean. The city of Havana is still in it's historic phase but it slowly becoming modernized. The Hotel Nacional was the highlight of my visit. Built in the 1930's, it has had it's share of famous guest s like Errol Flynn, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Winston Churchill, Robert Redford, and hundreds more. This hotel has beautiful rooms, swimming pools, cabaret, restaurants, internet, bars, and much much more. I would rate it 5 out of 5 in the category of historic hotels in the world.
