From cosmopolitan Madrid to beautiful Seville to the British territory of Gibraltar to breathtaking Alhambra to lovely Elba and to Florence, Pisa and Rome, this trip was loaded with adventures and fascinating encounters with history, art, architecture, natural beauty and local culture. Our small ship, Aegean Odyssey, provided a certain intimacy and relaxed atmosphere and featured an outdoor terrace where we could take meals while gazing at the beautiful Mediterranean. Our group leader, Alex, kept everything running smoothly, was extremely helpful and caring and kept everyone feeling comfortable. I can highly recommend this trip, but be advised that it does require lots of walking, including hilly areas, steps and uneven surfaces.

This was a grand adventure! I signed up for the Voyages to Antiquity Western Mediterranean primarily because the itinerary included two places that I have always wanted to see - The Alhambra and Florence. Add in Elba, and the combination was irresistible. I also like small-ship cruising, having previously experienced a Road Scholar trip on the Minerva. Small ships are much more friendly than giant cruise ships. The Aegean Odyssey management team also realizes that solo travelers are people too, which is a remarkably refreshing attitude, and one that is notably lacking on big cruise ships. Several solo passenger get-togethers were organized during the cruise. The Aegean Odyssey also offers nice perks to repeat customers, something that I will definitely keep in mind. As always, the Road Scholar shore excursions were excellent. Our group leader, Alex Paiva Cardoso, is a marvelous person - exceptionally well-organized, kind, compassionate, and with a great sense of humor. He is fluent in several European languages, and handled every crisis that arose, large to small, with the highest level of professionalism. There were several days when the shore excursions seemed to require much more walking than the stated two miles that defines the Active level. While we were pretty tired at times, I don’t regret any of it. We saw some remarkable places, and made memories to be treasured. I am very very pleased to have had this experience.

The Aegean Odyssey proves attractive for a cohort that likes a small ship experience. Many people on the tour have had multiple tours on this ship. However, the amenities are average for a cruise ship and the meals are average as well. The ship staff in the dining area are helpful and personable. In rough seas the ship proves to be unstable.Cabins are very small and luggage space is limited. Occasionally, rusty water appears in the faucets.Shower stalls need non slip mats. We were told after the fact that such mats could be furnished. Afternoon and evening entertainment is limited to an instrumental trio and a single female soloist. Embarkation and Disembarkation are efficient because of the small population of people on the ship. One must like cruising at sea to enjoy this ship.If you prefer a different experience this ship may not be your first choice.
