What a wonderful week in Venice! Our group leader, Michela and local expert, Christina, provided substantial information and structure to our otherwise independent program. Our group of thirteen were well suited and we enjoyed our daily lectures and prearranged tours to areas of interest (St. Mark's Cathedral evening tour was extraordinary, as well as the Vivaldi Concert at San Vidal Church and then the visit to the Bevilacqua velvet workshop..fabulous!) Accommodations were charming and breakfasts were perfect. Excellent week with lovely people- I definitely will plan another Road Scholar trip- soon!

Wonderful independent tour of Venice - just the right amount of background info and hand holding, if needed; got into places that I would not have seen without tour; group size was great (13) so you got to meet each person. Would do another one again.

Loved using the vaporetto, even when we took it the wrong way! The Venetians were very helpful, especially if you made an effort to speak a little Italian.

The only problem with this program is that it's too short. We were given lots of information in the lectures, which were about 1 and a half hours most mornings, and there were optional group activities at other times, but mostly we had free time, as promised. We were given a free pass for the vaporetto (water bus) which couldn't have been more valuable. You can get close to just about anywhere on the vaporetto. The rest of the time you walk, on pavement and over lots of little bridges with stairs. (There are no wheeled vehicles in Venice.) If feeling wealthy you could take a water taxi or even a gondola, which would take you straight to your destination, but they are incredibly expensive. It almost doesn't matter where you go, though, as it's fascinating everywhere. And don't miss the islands, especially Torcello, which you reach via the vaporetto. As for food, most meals are not included. You can eat expensively or relatively cheaply, which is what we did. The pasta is good everywhere, even at outdoor stands. So is the pizza. The "small mixed salad" is the same no matter where you get it. Places to eat are everywhere. One warning: don't order the "mixed fried fish" unless you really like squid & octopus.

This trip is great. Venice captures your heart and imagination. The hotel is centrally located and provides a hearty breakfast every morning. The schedule was well planned out with informative lectures followed by short tours . . . then plenty of free time for independent adventures.

First of all, thank you Michela, our intrepid guide who was never lost, and Christina, our charming and extremely knowledgeable lecturer. You made this trip of Venice, a crazy and magical city, one that we will never forget. There is so much to see and do that we really appreciated having a whole week to be there. The independent format was perfect in that it allowed us the freedom to explore on our own and at our own pace. We highly recommend this fantastic trip.

The Independent Venice trip was phenomenal. The group members were diverse and made me feel welcome despite the age difference and there were enough solo travelers that I did not feel as if I was always on my own. In addition, even the couples invited me on outings and to eat! I met some really engaging, interesting people that only enhanced my experience in Venice which is a beautiful place to wander and learn.

Michela was an outstanding trip leader and went to great lengths to ensure that we were well cared for. The independent travel approach blending the superb structured lectures of Christina, optional group walks, and fully independent wandering worked very well for us. The suggested walks, the documents on the "big-ticket" items to see, the museum pass, and the vaporetti pass made getting around and figuring out what to do very easy. The trip duration was perfect for us, although if done again we would book an additional day or two after the program to hit the things we missed during the week. Even in November (low season) and with aqua alta (high water flooding St. Marks square) there were always several hundred folks lined up to get into the basilica. Our private night-time lighted tour of the basilica was worth the trip price by itself.

Very enjoyable program for those who like to set their own agenda and explore on their own. Nice balance of group lecture and independence. Lots of walking, lots of steps and lots of water taxi rides. Venice is a lovely and unique city.
