This was a great trip. It wasn't until i got home that i realized how much i got out of it. I liked that we got an early start every day and had some free time in the afternoon. Chicago is a great place to visit.

The program presents the development and growth of the downtown City through the architecture, and introduced the genius and architectural work of Frank Lloyd Wright through site visits to landmark buildings and facilities, by walking tours and travel to FLW designed homes. An excellent program!

Great program led by fun leaders, Sue and Dick. The educational content was particularly good and well presented by a knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructor. A good balance of lecture, walking tours, and bus tours. Pleasant and convenient hotel. Early October is a nice time to be in Chicago. Jan from Houston

Great short trip that covered a lot of interesting architectural territory! Enjoyed the tour by river and the walking tour of city very much. Special little lunch at Macy's enjoyed by all. Location of hotel was perfect in allowing for visiting Millineum Park, Art Inst, and Goodman Theatre -- within easy walking distance.

This was a well planned program giving us an overview of the architectural history of the greater Chicago area. The boat ride on the Chicago River was a highlight and gave us the opportunity to see the multitude of buildings and the various architectural styles. Loved the in depth time spent visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright home and studio. Great group of fellow travelers.

The group leaders, as life long Chicago residents, went out of their way to assist the participants in making their way around the city and sincerely wanted us to enjoy out time there. It set a very positive tone. The Architecture River Cruise was informative and a highlight for me. Enjoyed getting to know the friendly and well traveled people on this trip. Lots of good meal time conversation. Suggest reading up on the history and architecture beforehand.

This program was most informative, and provided an excellent overview of the architecture of Chicago, as well as the specific contributions of Frank Lloyd Wright. The boat trip on the Chicago River was excellent, and complemented the other portions of the program. Overall, an excellent program.

Lots of walking, lots of delicious calories, and very warm & friendly hosts from the JCC. The city hotel was right along the Chicago River (Wacker at Michigan) with the sounds & excitement of the upscale urban scene. The only reason I signed up was for the Frank Lloyd Wright tours, but I had a wonderful experience learning about the development of the city itself -- the river architectural boat ride & talk were excellent. I never would have found 1/10th of the wonderful things I saw (and ate) if I had gone there on my own... although I may go back now by myself to see more of it. Or maybe I will do a different Road Scholar tour of Chicago... one that includes the museums. This was my first of many Road Scholar programs.

Lifelong students who are interested in learning more about the history of one of America's greatest, most excitingly vibrant cities should consider this magnificent course in architecture. Not only will they learn about the birth of the skyscraper, the artistry and genius behind brilliant men like Frank Lloyd Wright, William Sullivan and others, but they'll gain an appreciation of the history of the City with Big Shoulders. It's fascinating how it rose from the ashes of the Great Fire and re-invented itself for a new generation. The art and architecture of Chicago are illustrations of how this metropolis grew from a fort on a river to become a world center. Those participating in this wonderful program will not only learn more than their brains can hold, they'll become revitalized and challenged to learn more about a city that reflects its diversity and excellence at every glance.

Very good new program. We had been watching for a Chicago program with Frank Lloyd Wright emphasis. Among the best of our 10 Elderhostel/Road Scholar programs so far. Excellent host couple. Excellent special tour guide for seminars and for the walking and bus tour segments covering the wide range of architectural building styles. Vintage hotel location right on the Chicago river. Hotel breakfasts were basic, but the variety of lunch and dinner venues were very good Chicago appropriate. Hope another home tour is added.

Esther from Arlington Heights, IL Number of programs attended: 7

Excellent program! Prepare to walk a lot, learn about Chicago's famous architects and architecture, and have some wonderful meals. Any reading you can do before the trip would be helpful in understanding the history of the city and its buildings.
