ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

What a wonderful week. Not only did we learn a great deal about the lore and history of the development of railroards in Colorado and what caused them to be, but we saw the beauty of the fall aspen folage and some wonderful wildlife. A well run program.

I particularly enjoyed the train rides and learning so much about the history of the railroad in Colorado. The bus ride the last day was much too long, but other than that I loved the program and received excellent value for my money. Everything ran on time and as expected, which I really appreciate. Our instructor was passionate and extraordinarily knowledgeable. Overall, a great experience.

With a great group of folks we learned about the early history of Colorado from our very knowledgeable leader. We got to see parts of Colorado that can only be viewed from a train. It was a very enjoyable trip.

Sondra from Montrose, NY Number of programs attended: 14

Although I am not a true train devotee, I thoroughly enjoyed this program. There was so much beauty to see & so much history to learn. The train excursions took us to places that would have not been available to view by any other means. This is a trip for anyone who would like to see more & learn more about our country.

An amazing wealth of knowledge about trains, mining and Colorado and lots of fun tain rides.

Norman from Winthrop, MA Number of programs attended: 3

Scenery is great. I am not a train buff but I like the Rockies. Train rides were mostly interesting and Al, your host, tell stories about the history of not only the trains but the people of the area that make the trip come alive. Food at times left much to be desired. High altitude might trouble some people. We were usually at 8,000 feet average for the 8 days. Made me and my wife feel constantly tired. Saw many folks taking cat naps as we traveled from spot to spot. Overall a very interesting and enjoyable 8 days.

Don from Petaluma, CA Number of programs attended: 4

This program was much more than trains. We saw soaring mountains, rushing rivers, deep gorges, wildflowers and wildlife as well as learning about the history of the area from the Ute Indians to miners to railroaders. Much of what we saw was only visible from the trains. It is a great introduction to the Rocky Mountains.

Laurie from Chula Vista, CA Number of programs attended: 5

An incredible program. I was concerned only gear heads would enjoy this tour, but I was so wrong. The country we traveled through was startling beautiful. I took nearly 2,000 photos! Our tour guides were friendly, continuously available, and took care of every detail. I loved learning the history of Colorado through its citizens and families. One caveat: we were asked to sign overbroad releases which would have released the travel companies from liability for their own recklessness. In fact, a jeep company employee misrepresented (probably innocently) the coverage of the company's release. Other than that small issue, this trip will stay as one of our most enjoyable trips in the United States.

Roger from College Station, TX Number of programs attended: 16

This is an excursion through a unique area of the United States unavailable in any other form. The program should interest those for whom hustory is interesting. What we saw is completely different than what early settlers experienced. To a history buff, this is fascinating.

As a first time Road Scholar participant, I wasn't sure what to expect. From the beginning of the trip to the end I was overwhelmed at the "class act" this trip provided. I am already looking forward to planning another adventure.

Cindy from Sellersville, PA Number of programs attended: 1

This was my first Road Scholar tour and it was absolutely amazing. The scenery alone was majestic and I learned a great deal about trains that I was not aware of. Met some wonderful people and made new friends. Definitely a great way to travel and I would highly recommend this trip especially if you are interested in trains, railroads and the awesome mountains of Colorado.

Arthur from San Diego, CA Number of programs attended: 1

This is an outstanding and unusual tour of the remarkable state of Colorado. Many segments are traveled by historical railroads including the exciting Durango to Silverton, Pike's Peak, Georgetown Loop, and Royal Gorge. The scenery is awesome. Great snowcapped mountains, white-water streams, and deep gorges are among the awesome sights. The instructor and organization are outstanding. Historic tales of the early railroad and road developers are extremely interesting. The cost is very reasonable given what this tour contains.

I really enjoyed my first trip with you. Our director PJ More was really good at helping us when needed and the trains were amazing. The last stop Ouray was interesting but not worth a two night stay. The 4 wheel drive up into the mountains there wasn't much and the two breakfasts in Ouray were many blocks away on hilly terrain and not very good.

This was a great trip with wonderful rides on a variety of trains with some steam engines. Elevations were no problem. Lodging was comfortable and many meals were in interesting old restaurants. Lectures on rail, mining, history, region, etc. were outstanding. There was a nice mix of activities. Trip leadership was best I have had on a RS trip. Stays in Durango and Ouray were highlights. Activity level was fairly sedate. There were a number of stops in interesting places. Some interest in railroads and mining adds to one's appreciation and enjoyment of this trip which certainly fulfills the educational aspect of a RS tour.
