Digital Photography Course on Star Island off the Coast of New Hampshire
August 23rd 2014

This is the second time that I have taken this same course on Star Island since it was so informative the first time I took it and helpful as I try to learn more about digital photography. The class is usually made up of novices and skilled photographers which make the instructor, Arnie Silverstone, tailor his presentation to meet the needs of the diverse group of participants. He begins his lecture by saying a picture is worth a thousand words so he uses animated slides throughout his presentation to make learning very easy. I found the other Road Scholar attendees very helpful since they had the same camera as mine and could show me how to navigate around my camera’s many digital features. On the final day of the course we submitted our best picture for a slide presentation where everyone could see the beautiful pictures we had all taken and incorporated the photography techniques we had just learned.

The food was very good considering you are on an island for a week with deliveries of fresh produce on a limited basis. Many of the vegetables are grown on the island itself. On the final evening the Pelicans, the name given to the servers, give a musical presentation which is entertaining and lively. While the Star Island Inn is primitive one should not expect the living quarters to be like the Marriott for it is like living on a cruise ship where water is in short supply and the electricity has to be generated on the island itself.

Jim Foster-Attended 19 Road Scholar Programs Digital Photography Course on Star Island off the coast of New Hampshire August 24th 2013 For those wishing to learn more about their digital camera or learn more about what it takes to take a good picture, then this is the course for you. The class is usually made up of novices and skilled photographers which make the instructor, Arnie Silverstone, tailor his presentation to meet the needs of the diverse group of students. This is a real plus for his excellent presentation covers the many different camera features so no one is left out of the learning process because of their particular camera. While not mentioned it is a good idea to bring a tripod for picture taking if you can. Considering the large group that has to be fed the food is remarkably good and healthy. They even grow their own vegetables on the island. It is customary for the Pelicans, the name given to the servers, to give a musical presentation on the final night of the program. In addition to the photography program, there are nightly educational programs on cod fishing of bygone years and the history of the Isles of Shoals. While the Inn is very primitive one should not expect it to be like the Marriott for it is similar to living on a cruise ship where water is in short supply and the electricity has to be generated on the island itself.

The location of this program on Star Island is awesome! Yes, the accommodations are simple but considering the history of the Oceanic Hotel and the island, it was so worth experiencing it. I will go back!!
