Off-the-beaten path Italy is just as beautiful and interesting!

This program far exceeded our expectations and we visited many more places than the program description. We went to family owned restaurants and tasted the local food of each area. Loved it and can't wait for another Road Scholar trip!

A great combination of history, culture and drop dead gorgeous scenery presented by a thoroughly knowledgeable and caring Group Leader, Mara Mori, aided by delightful Giada Negri. A "must" on any Italy lover's list.

La Dolce Vita: The Italian Lakes of Como, Garda, Maggiore: We were so lucky to have the weather sunny and 70's in September. The streets were so clean. The villas and gardens were so beautiful. The sky and water were so blue. The seafood, like the trout and salmon were so delicious. The desserts were "melt in your mouth". The scenery was like a "fairyland".

This trip was absolutely outstanding. Mara is wonderful. Her careful attention to every detail, sites, food, even the transfer days resulted in an excellent trip. The historical perspective she and the local guides provided really enhanced this experience. Anyone interested in visiting Northern Italy should seriously consider this program

We have taken a number of Road Scholar trips and this trip to the Lake Country of Italy is ,by far, the best trip we have experienced. This is attributed to our excellent tour leader, Mara Mori.

This program will appeal to anyone who enjoys strolling through quaint medieval villages, exploring ancient castles, and visiting magnificent villas with their beautiful interiors and marvelous gardens. When you combine this with the spectacular scenery of the Italian lakes and nearby Alps you have a trip not to be missed. Guide Mara Mori is outstanding, the best we have ever encountered. Her knowledge of the history, culture and cuisine of the area is extensive, and it is obvious that she takes great pride and pleasure in sharing it all with her students. Her efforts are largely responsible for making this program the huge success that it is.

I have been telling everyone that I can confirm that heaven does exist, and that it is located in northern Italy. The weather, food, and tour organization were all very good to great. Nice group of 28 congenial people. Churches, mountains, fabulous villas and palaces, remarkable gardens. It was a very good two weeks.

This was our 10th Road Scholar trip & it was one of the best, if not THE BEST!. The weather was perfect, our guide was outstanding, the variety of activities was great, the scheduling and transportation was excellent, the food was plentiful & delicious, the accommodations were very nice. The lakes area of Italy has got to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. And it was so great to share it with such a fun group of people.

I just got back from this trip. I was on the trip from September 9th to September 22nd, 2013. I've never been to Europe before and this was the trip of a lifetime! For me it was a pilgrimage because my father's family was from this area. Our tour guides were incredible. Mara Mori has a vast knowledge of the history of the region, but I was especially touched by her warmth and kindness. Some of us had physical challenges and Mara was always very accomodating. If we couldn't do the whole activity she'd say you can have a coffee and wait for us to return. I just can't say enough good things about Mara. I said you have a passion for your job and she said I have a passion for people. And she certainly does! Fabio who was our other guide was great also. He was very knowledgeable, kind and had a great sense of humor. This trip was worth every penny and totally exceeded my expectations! The beauty of the Lakes Region was incredible. We saw gardens, villas, churches and so much more. I will remember this wonderful trip to Italy for the rest of my life! Carole Bignardi

This was my 4th Road Scholar trip, and it was wonderful! Mara Mori was/is a gem. She is so knowledgeable about all things Italian and is an effective and interesting teacher. She went out of her way to make things more comfortable for some group members who were having difficulties, without sacrificing the group's experience. The hotels were great, the meals were ALL incredible, the scenery more spectacular than I imagined, the churches and museums more beautiful. All in all, one of the best trips I have ever taken!

The Road Scholar program in the Italian lakes is a winner -- perhaps the most extraordinary among RS's other excellent Italian programs. Mara Mori, the program director, is a national treasure! Highly recommended. . . .

Touring the Italian Lakes with Mara Mori was a wonderful experience! We were awed by a breathtaking variety of mountains, lakes, historical sites, and gardens, all presented in the context of the region’s complex history. Mara is a talented and engaging teacher, with a deep knowledge of the region. She made the local history, architecture, art, and culture personally meaningful to us. Mara made everything come alive. Fantastic food was an unexpected bonus. Mara chose excellent restaurants in every location – including some out-of-the-way local gems – and she knew the best foods and wines on every menu. We enjoyed great meals, and we learned about the regional cuisine and wines in historical and cultural context. In every way, this tour exceeded our expectations and hopes. We’ll savor the memories always.

Road scholars say that "Lagos" of Northern Italy is IT! Not even close;it's La Dolce Vita gardens, villas, piazzas, islands, duomos, distant chapels, glorious pealing of church bells, snow covered Alps, cloud covered Dolomites, two hour boat rides, hoovercraft, rapido boats, cable cars, and of course, vineyards. Lots of vineyards.... There is more, Yes! There are people who are passionate with talents to share their culture with us daily. Mara Mori's leadership gave us unsurpassing knowledge of the history and geography that shapes Italy today while showcasing its dominating role of the past eras. Mara's classrooms were hands-on appreciation of her beloved country, worts and all. Her role was like an art teacher creating a visual canvas to show the hues and earth tone layers of what makes Italy unique. To see its many castles and fortresses, one had to step each step, climb each path, twist it up and around to view what her forefathers saw. Impressive! Mara's tutorial sessions were extensive in locales where we stayed. They often complimented the sites we would be visiting. So culturally rewarding. Up in Bolzano, in a tyrollian Italian community, we ncountered our 5300 year old corpse, just found about 20 years ago, named "Osti", thawed from a glacier that covered him --- What a sight, yes way, way before Julius and Augustus! Osti goes along in our journey just like Bishop Clees, and Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trentino; St. Gulio Island in San Orto lake; the Borremean gardens in Lake Maggiore; the "duets" on Mother's Day in Sulzano and of course George Clooney's house(s) along Lake Como. Please note Beauty and Wonder were our fondest keepsakes, we each partook with enjoyment and enlightenment. Yes our trip should be retitled ---- correctly LA DOLCE VITA - MAGNIFICO!!!!!!!!! !! !!! ! P.S. Guilio was a great assistance along with Patrizia and Lorenza By Brad Morley

This trip was absolutely wonderful in spite of the several days of torrential rain. Our group leader (Mara Mori) conquered all obstacles, the sites visited were spectacular, and my fellow "students" were some of the nicest people I have ever met.

This program was my 11th or 12th trip to Italy, my fourth with Road Scholar (counting 3 with Elder Hostel), and I can safely say La Dolce Vita was the best vacation I ever had, even thugh I've been to the Northern Lakes before with Elder Hostel. I appreciated Mara Mori's professionalism, her knowledge of the lakes and their culture and history, and her selection of restaurants and menus, always focusing on typical local dishes. Here lecture were superb and intellectually stimulating with a blend of historical facts and quotations from world-famous writers and compsers. She managed to work around the sometimes inclement weather by juggling lectures and field trips so we still saw the important villas, towns and places without sacrificing quality. The instructors she hired were also exceptional, particularly Patrizia Spini.
