Road Scholar
Program #2833RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

As the solo Canadian on this trip. I was eager to learn on my first Washington, DC trip. Gary and Dave were great tour guides, kept us moving. The itinerary was superb, loved the Metro ride from the Radisson in Crystal City to downtown. All other 32 travel mates shared their info on past RS adventures ... More learning for me. The National Mall is a place for a visit on its own....very moving at the war memorials. We were lucky enough to have some fellows in their 90s in our group ~ one veteran was wearing his "Veteran" baseball cap and had his hand shaken by a young busy taking his 'selfie'. A special moment in time for me! Loved to see as a Cdn that kind of American patriotism and respect. First trip of many I will take to Washington DC, so much more to see! 😄

Wonderful. An "insider's" guide to experiencing DC. Chris, Gary and Valerie were helpful, informative and fun. I recommend this program.

Thoroughly enjoyable overview of DC -- flexible guides who had to accommodate bad weather conditions that are never in anybody's control!

Marie from El Segundo, CA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 04/27/14 - 05/02/14
This is a great tour and I would recommend it to everyone. It is best for "history people". If you are a "math/science" person, you might want to add a couple of days and see the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport and the National Cryptographic Museum at Ft. Meade.

Wendy from Sturgeon County, AB Number of programs attended: 1

Wonderful trip and glad to meet so many interesting people. Dennis and I will enjoy all the great pics we took. I feel I have a better understanding of US history now. Missed having breakfast with all of our group this morning, our first day home. Thnking of all of you fondly.

What a great trip! My wife and I had a wonderful time. What we saw and heard in 5 days on this trip was more than I saw in multiple trips to D.C. Megan and Gary were wonderful leaders providing educational and entertainment opportunities that resulted in many memories. And the food was great also. I strongly recommend this trip.

This program is wonderful. It was everything we were hoping it would be. The leaders were terrific and the speakers were wonderful. We can't wait until our next Road Scholars trip.

Gary and Megan were delightful group leaders!

This was an excellent itinerary and my first Road Scholar trip exceeded expectations. If you want to take in Washington DC, this covers the Capital and Mall area nicely, the Kennedy Center, Ford'sTheater Theater which had an outstanding play The Laramie Project. I would suggest extending a couple of days after your trip, and depart on Sunday. The final day which is Friday, does leave you the good part of the day to see what you've missed. Our plane flew out at 5pm to the West Coast, which did give us extra time. There was one evening free and I met up with a friend who lived nearby. The morning speakers were outstanding. The guides friendly and knowledgeable, thanks to Megan and Gary and Valerie, our stalwart driver. Great job! I'm already thinking about next year. Many thanks to all.

Our tour of Washington D.C. far exceeded my expectations. Our guides kept us well-informed of the day's activities and of any changes but what I liked most of all was their enthusiasm and depth of knowledge of what we were touring. A big thumbs-up to Road Scholars and kudos to the guides.

Your October 12-18, 2013, Washington DC planners masterfully sidestepped the government shutdown and provided a memorable adventure for us. After Congress’ late-night vote to set aside sequestration, your guides made sure we were first to tour the Jefferson Memorial next morning. They used every minute of available time to match the situation with nimble planning. Congratulations. --Frank & Jerry Moore, Shreveport, LA

John from Walnut Creek, CA Number of programs attended: 5

This was an excellent program and I would recommend this trip to anyone. Even if the Government shut down after two days the crew from the American Civics (Megan & Gary)kept us moving and seeing sites that were not on the program. This was the best trip that we have been on through Road Scholar.

Linda from Walnut Creek, CA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 09/29/13 - 10/04/13
Excellent program, extremely informative. Only damper was the gov't shutdown and our tour guides did a fantastic job of getting us as much access as they could and substituting more sites (Newseum, Mount Vernon, Arlington Cemetery) than we were locked out of. Linda Herron, Walnut Creek California

A very well-organized, highly educational, entertaining, at times amusing(because of the guide and instructors)program with comfortable accommodations. Group leaders anticipated and met our needs and looked after participants at all times. A major advantage was ease of transportation to so many sites, which allowed us to see so many places in one day. I also liked meeting other participants eager to learn. Highly recommended for those interested in American history and the ways of our government.

I recently completed the Discover Washington DC trip in the midst of the federal gov't shut down. Our trip organizers / leaders were outstanding in re-vamping our daily schedule so we had an amazing and very topical trip! We were still able to visit monuments and have unexpected and highly enjoyable venue and activity changes that added to the value of our trip. I highly recommend this trip to those who wish to be immersed in the culture, history and daily happenings of Washington DC!

Loved the tour. The tour guides were fast on their feet to restructure our tour due to the government shutdown. We did and saw unexpected things which made the trip exciting. I'd never been to DC before and we touched on many things. I think it is an excellent tour for your first time.

Grant from Foster City, CA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/15/13 - 09/20/13
We really enjoyed the program. I would give it a 9.5 out of 10. The lecturers and our tour guides were excellent. The only drawback was that we had too many people in our group (43). The groups should be limited to 20 to 25.

Nancy from Kalamazoo, MI Number of programs attended: 11

Probably the best educational trip I have been on! Great presentors, leaders and sites visited. Easiest way to visit D.C.

Hello, everyone, from my home in St. Louis, Missouri. Guess what the weather is? Yes, it is flooding and raining here. Am I still in D.C.? Thanks to all for sharing the experience with me. You were great and I enjoyed your company. What a wonderful memory!! Cecilia from Missouri

This program was an excellent overview of the emotionally moving memorials, magnificent museums, and our beautiful and ornate U.S. Capitol building and Library of Congress. It was very well organized and the leaders made great use of the time allowed.
