Road Scholar
Program #15146RJ
21 Days | 20 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This program was a great way of offering a small tasting of Southeast Asia in a way that one would get a realistic flavor for the life, history, traditions and culture of this part of the world. Tuan was our tour guide throughout the entire trip and I would say that he was the glue between each of the local guides that helped to weave a tapestry of Southeast Asia, with knowledge, engagement, patience and humor!

If you are looking for a trip that is: an introduction to a variety of cultural expressions; intellectually thought provoking and stimulating; emotionally engaging; competently administered--this may be the trip for you. Our experience: well informed and engaging guides in each country; joyful special events (music, dance, artistic demonstrations); competent and well informed lecturers; seamlessly managed transportation and infrastructure arrangements. We are novices in Road Scholar travel, but were impressed.

If you want to visit exotic and different places, South East Asia is the place to go. This trip certainly opened my horizons of this part of the world. It was an incredible experience and highly recommend it. Beyond my expectations.

The trip into the Heart of Asia was a trip of my heart into the secrets of an unknown past, into palaces and ruins much greater than any in Europe. Southeast Asia wrapped me into a past and presence fully different from the West. It is now time to add the intellectual to the emotional with the help of books. And of curse, I will have to go back and stay for a longer time in these countries, especially Laos.

This trip gave me a positive feeling regarding Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. All of my senses were engaged and I learned a lot, too! The highlights were Angkor Wat, a visit to a silk weaving business, a ride on an elephant, and a cruise on Halong Bay. All in all an exhausting but, most enjoyable experience!

"Journey into the Heart of Asia" is a whirlwind tour that will introduce you to another world. It would be an excellent follow-up to a year's study of the history, religion, and way of life of south-east Asia.

Good introduction to cultural, economical, and political aspects of SE Asia through lectures and experiences. The free time activities help to facilitate interaction with the locals.

If you are looking for a trip to learn about the cultures of these 4 countries, this is the trip for you. Ancient history, ancient buildings, beautiful people and food of all varieties. Shopping in the local markets day and night is a great experience. Thuy is a great guide, we were lucky to have her as our trip leader.

Gordon from Tulsa, OK Number of programs attended: 6

This was one of our most interesting tours. We had full days of adventure, new and interesting events, as well as opportunities to learn first hand the residents' struggles with land mines and flooding issues. We viewed expansive caves and picturesque landscapes.

This program is chockfull of interesting, beautiful, moving and fun experience--from a cooking lesson and early morning ride on an elephant to witnessing alms giving at sunrise in Luang Prabang and exploring the various temples at the Angkor Wat complex. You'll return home exhausted, but thrilled and enriched.

We had a great time. Our main guide, Nguyen Van Thuyen, was extremely responsible. We marveled at his continuous politeness and patience with respect to one very difficult participant.

What an incredible experience! We were fortunate enough to Journey Into the Heart of Asia in February 2013. Photos and a more in depth review at: http://destinationnow.me/2013/02/25/why-i-love-road-scholar/

Just completed "Journey into the Heart of Asia". This was our first Road Scholar trip and we are completely sold on Road Scholar! The trip was amazing in every way - from the organization and logistics, to the tour guide and country guides, the food, the wonderful speakers, the variety of experiences, and the attention detail. It left us with a much better understanding of SE Asia - its history, food, culture and challenges. Can't wait for our next Road Scholar trip!
