The Grand Manan program is a very wworthwhile adventure. Our host and tour guide was more than capable of providing a nice place to stay, good food, and educational tours complete with great storytelling. A great way to see this lovely island, its way of life and the associated wildlife.

This is a phenomenal trip. I was disappointed NOT to see Right Whalles but the ability to see Puffins from a blind more than made up for it. Jim's leadership, sense of humor, and desire to please is a blessing and the Marathan Inn is full of charm regardless of it's age and limitations. Food is amazing.

This program has moved to be my all time favorite. It met all my expectations and more; an outstanding program overall. Jim was guide, cook, driver, innkeeper, historian and more. He made schedule adjustments due to coastal weather to make sure we got the most of the program. The inn is old, quirky and a delightful place to stay. Bouncing around the island in the red school bus is a kick. Meals are wonderful and Jim is also story teller extraordinaire. Don't miss it.

...this is an RS program to put on your top priority, to-do list! The tour leader, Jim Leslie, is outstanding (an understatement), the Island is beautiful, and do you want to see humpbacks?- look for Foggy and her calf in the Bay of Fundy, and you do not want to miss "chain-sawing" with the Puffins, south of Grand Manan Island... highly recommend this one! What could be better than watching whales in the Bay of Fundy and coaxing a storm petrel chick from its burrow on a private island? And be joined by companionable Road Scholars and lead by a gracious raconteur? And eating delicious fresh seafood every night (or meat if one is so inclined)? And all this for an amazingly reasonable price? We like it so much that this was our second time on this program and we promised Jim Leslie, the leader, that we will come again!

Put this one on your "bucket list" -- it's a wonderful experience led by Jim Leslie who's someone you're unlikely to ever forget!

Emily from Queensbury, NY Number of programs attended: 2

Emily from Queensbury, NY I loved every minute of this program. I learned so much about whales, birds, the fishing industry, and life on a small island. The small group size enabled me to get to know all the guests. The host was the inn owner, the cook, the bus driver, one of 3 teachers, and a gracious host. This was my 3rd Road Scholar Trip.

This was our first Road Scholar trip and it has set the bar extremely high! It was a wonderful trip based in a charming inn lead by the perfect host. Whale watching from a pilot ketch, touring a lighthouse, exploring a hard-working fishing island, bird watching, amazing sunsets, and fantastic people & food all guarantee that this will be the first of many Road Scholar adventures!

A whole new world was opened to me on our visit to Grand Manan. It is a beautiful island trying to stay that way in a balance of man and the environment. The diversity of the program provides something for everyone who is open to learning and a little adventure.

Harry from Asheville, NC Number of programs attended: 9

Exceptional program with considerable variety in activities. Unexpected plus was the quality and variety of the wonderfully prepared meals in the historic setting of the Marathon Inn operated by Jim Leslie. Jim is a unique and very interesting person who engaged superb instructors to offer a great program.

Duane from Avon Lake, OH Number of programs attended: 26
Date attended: 08/17/14 - 08/23/14
This program is listed as "active." But I had to sit out only the walk down 55 stairs to the lighthouse because I use a cane. This was my choice. Getting on and off the whale watching boat was not a problem

Sharon from Davie, FL Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 08/24/14 - 08/30/14
Smelling salt air, boating into the Bay of Fundy to spy on whales, nibbling on seaweed, walking along the beautiful beaches and cliffs, exploring an old lighthouse, watching birders stare at birds, dining on luscious food, bouncing along in an old red school bus, meeting wonderful people, and listening to fascinating stories about Grand Manan told by one of the world’s best storytellers, what could be better? The trip was a delight.

Jonathan from Mount Prospect, IL Number of programs attended: 2

Several of the activities at Grand Manan were very unique and found no where else. Viewing the school of Fin Whales, touching a Storm Petrel chick pulled from it's burrow, were two that alone made the trip worth while. The ever present tidal scenery with our warm host Jim Leslie made every moment a blessing. Five Stars!

Robert from Algoma, WI Number of programs attended: 9

This program was a wonderful experience. We learned a lot about the whales and birds of the area, and what it is like to live in such a placer. The leaders were not only very well informed, but fascinating people to get to know.

Grand Manan is a fascinating place and is worth the trip. The Marathon Inn was, itself, a memorable and pleasant experience. Program Director Jim Leslie and his staff made our stay educational and the kind of experience that allows fond memories.

Our leader was 66 years old and made us all feel young. His enthusiasm for Grand Manan, it's life style and Road Scholar Program was extraordinarily good.

I can't say enough about this program. Jim was an excellent host. The Marathon Inn was truly unique and a treasure and the food and staff were wonderful. The whale watching and puffin experience was totally awesome and the trip surpassed my expectations.

The Grand Manan Island program was our first Road Scholar program and the word GREAT describes our experience. Our Group Leader, Jim Leslie was outstanding; he made the program - from the initial welcome to our "graduation" the final evening. He's one of the best story tellers I've ever heard. The other 17 participants in our program had similar interests and were a lot of fun. By graduation evening it felt like we had a new extended family. The meals were tasty and the food plentiful. Marathon Inn was a hoot. As others have stated, there probably is not a straight floor board in the annex where we stayed but that just added to its charm. We'll definetely stay there again if we return to Grand Manan. Leslie Murison and Roger Burrows, marine biologist and professional birder respectively, were well informed and willingly/enthusiastically shared their knowledge. The Elsie Minota crew were considerate and helpful throughout our two whale watching trips. The industrial tour helped us to better understand how Grand Manan Island residents make their living - and its not so much based on tourism as we had thought. We laughed a lot, saw and learned a lot and overall had a very good time. We'd recommend this Road Scholar Program for anyone who is into whale and/or bird watching and enjoys sharing the experience with others who have similar interests.

From 1-5 stars, this one gets a 12! Awesome scenery awesome whales. Jim was a wonderful host, chef and comedian, very personable. Laurie knows everything about whales, as Roger does about birds. The fact that I plan to return on this program should be recommendation enough!

Having wanted to do this program for several years now, it finally happened and was even better than my anticipation. The staff were great, made new friends and finally got to see puffins up close and personal! The rest was all bonuses, including a great sunset at a nearby lighthouse!

This program is dear to my heart! So dear, in fact, that my wife and I have just completed our third time of participating in it. The program content, the presenters, the Marathon Inn, Grand Manan Island itself, and most of all, the program leader, Jim Leslie, are, in my experience, unparalleled. If you enjoy beautiful locations by the sea, informative lectures and field trips, unique accommodations, excellent food, and friendly companionship with fellow travelers, this program cannot be anything but truly delightful.
