ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

One of the things I wanted to see in my lifetime was Mt Rushmore. Little did I know that this Road Scholar Program would not only take me to the monument, but offered such interesting facts and history that I am even more impressed with this work of art than I imagined. This, plus the surrounding area with so much of our American history made the "Vanishing Trails" alive and real for me. I will be taking more "tours" if they are all like this one!

Whew! How to adequately describe this wonderful trip. Our guide (Penny) was very warm and knowledgeable, the speakers were fascinating and the landscape/landmarks truly interesting. We visited: Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, photo-op to Sturgis (and the impact of one million bikers showing up), Deadwood (including Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Kevin Costner, Homestake Gold Mine and its Neutrino Lab impact), Badlands NP, Wall Drug, the Needles Eye and its skinny tunnel, the Begging Burros and the Black Hills Geological Inst, - the people who found the T-Rex named "Sue"). The speakers included a geologist, a photographer who described Custer's first trip to the Black Hills, a rancher/writer describing ranch life, and a Lakota Indian in full regalia. My fellow road scholars were terrific to make this an especially memorable trip.

I loved every minute of the program. "Drooled" over the gushing streams because we are in the midst of a 3 year drought here in ca.

Marlene from Hoover, AL Number of programs attended: 3

This program is so much more than just Mount Rushmore, although that is obviously a highlight. Each day was filled with exciting new adventures and sights. We learned about the culture of both Native Americans and white settlers and obtained a good grasp of the history, the geology, and the development of the region. Wildlife spotting is great fun and the bison are magnificent! Our leader, Donna, was organized, flexible, knowledgeable, and great fun.

Carrie from Birmingham, AL Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/17/15 - 05/23/15
I had no knowledge or experience in this part of the USA. It was a remarkable learning experience in every way to attend my first (but not my last) Road Scholar adventure!

Marty from Penrose, CO Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/03/15 - 05/09/15
I learned so much more than I could have imagined, and our every comfort was addressed. Tim has a wealth of knowledge to share in his "stories", and our bus driver, Jacques Dupree, was a wonderful addition to the program. David Church (not sure of last name) was hilarious and his knowledge vast

Dale from Whitehall, PA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/21/14 - 09/27/14
This program met all expectations and went beyond. It opened our eyes and minds to so much of which we were previously unaware. We plan to return to the Black Hills.

Jacqueline from Sacramento, CA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/28/14 - 10/04/14
This program met all my expectations and then some! Our Program Leader, Karen, was friendly, enthusiastic and her familiarity with the places we visited was interesting and educational. We had great accommodations and excellent food at the K Bar S Lodge in Keystone. I would definitely recommend this program!

Alice from West Chicago, IL Number of programs attended: 2

The information presented was very very well done. This was my 5th visit to this area but excepting one intergenerational program had been done individually. Take a ROAD SCHOLAR program; you will see more, learn more and have many to discuss the days interesting events.

Gladys from Hainesport, NJ Number of programs attended: 3

This program exceeded my expectations and gave me an appreciation of the history and diversity of Northwestern part of South Dakota.

Diane from Santa Cruz, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/14/14 - 09/20/14
Adding to what others have said, all the logistics were handled very well. I appreciated the variety of experiences and environments. I listened to two different talks by Park Rangers at Mt. Rushmore and was pleased to hear that they did not gloss over or diminish the poor treatment of native Indians by our government. This was my first Road Scholar trip and I very much enjoyed it, but would have liked more interactive learning and discussions.

Kathleen from Farmington, CT Number of programs attended: 1

The program was enriching and stimulating. What a beautiful part the USA, and what nice people we met.

Beverly from Harrisonburg, VA Number of programs attended: 19
Date attended: 09/14/14 - 09/20/14
We had a wonderful time! Our tour leader Jerry was very knowledgeable about history and the mechanics of leading a program - very considerate. The scenery was magnificent and so different from other areas of the country. For me, the day at Mt. Rushmore was the highlight. I LIKED all the facilities altho some people complained about the square architecture of the public facilities. The Monument is awe-inspiring and amazing. The trips to the Badlands and the Black Hills were very enlightening - never seen such country before. Buffaloes and burros right up beside the coach, and prairie dogs curious and active! The train ride to Hill City was relaxing and enjoyable - good scenery. The museum in Hill City was excellent - fossils of prehistoric life, especially of dinosaurs - Kids should really enjoy that visit. Our lodging was excellent, the staff VERY helpful, the location was away from the tourist places in Keystone (but close) and was very calming and relaxing. We could say Good Morning and Good-nNight to GW's profile only about three+ miles away. Food was good , accomodations very nice! All in all, one of the best programs I have experienced. (This is my 16th Elderhostel/Road Scholar program.) I give it an A+! Beverly from Virginia

Nan from Cadillac, MI Number of programs attended: 1

This program exposed us to a unique combination of experiences and sites that we may not have pursued on our own. We learned about the Black Hills from a variety of perspectives - its rugged natural beauty, rich history and compelling cultural dynamics. Great experience!
