Program #2011RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

I loved my first and not my last Road Scholar trip. It was well organized, interesting and fun. I learned so much and enjoyed visiting all the sites that we learned in the lectures. Top notch program for such a reasonable price. Everyone from Road Scholar were very delightful.

Wow American History as an adult is so much more interesting than it was in high school... Really enjoyed my time at Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown... Before we went we read books about Roanoke the lost colony that preceded Jamestown and also about some more obscure characters that helped us win the Revolutionary war. as well as some on the reading list.... so preparing for the trip was exciting too. Once there we could imagine those characters we had read about living out their daily life. This trip really did make History come alive.

This was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to visit these historic sites. I was very impressed with all of the speakers and guides and the Group Leader. Thoroughly enjoyed myself and recommend it highly. Looking forward to doing another one.

I thought I knew American history, but now I know so much more! It was a wonderful trip with so many knowledgeable speakers and field trips. I will definitely go on another one.

Road Scholar did an outstanding job of preparing a meaningful week in Colonial Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown. I enjoyed the thorough preparation of the presenters, both scholarly and entertaining. The Road Scholar representative was superior in every way, taking care of all the needs of our group. Thank you for a delightful week!

I have learned additional historical facts that were not taught to me during my basic educational years. This experience has me yearning for more historical facts about the "beginning" of the United States of America. What an interesting beginning!

Morning classes, afternoon field trips and evening entertainment was the general format. Classes were fun and informative due to the outstanding faculty who know and love their material. The topics for discussion (history, music, cooking, archeology) were well chosen. The field trips complemented the instruction. The pacing was good.

This program was fantastic. A great combination of lectures, by experts and field trips to highlight what we had learned. Entertainment was very professional and provided for fun and additional information. Recommend this to anyone interested in history.

This program will provide participants of all ages with new insights on the founding of our country and the conditions that resulted in our independence from British rule. Walking endurance is a must for maximum enjoyment.

This was my first Road Scholar program, and it exceeded my expectations. It was certainly cost effective. The balance between lectures/presentations and visits to the sites was good. All presentations were lively and interesting and increased my enjoyment when visiting the various sites. I could not have learned so much on my own. The hotel was very nice, in a great location, and provided excellent meals. The group was delightful, and I loved the mikes and receivers--I could hear everything, even when hanging back to look at something a little longer. I understand that this program will be one day longer, and I agree that is a good idea. I will certainly attend more programs in the future!

This Road Scholar Tour was a surprise to us. It exceeded our expectations in every way: itineraries, lectures, tours, guides, accommodations, food, and participants. An extremely good group. Better all around than the higher end tours we've taken in the past. And less expensive.

Too heavily regimented for us. Too much time in the classroom and not enough time on sites. Also, too little personal free exploring time. Most speakers and performers were excellent. The hotel was awful to say the least and I have attached representative photos of the property. As this was our first RS experience, we doubt we will schedule another after our next obligation in December. We aren't expecting a 5* hotel. At the same time it should be well maintained, free of offensive odors mentioned by several participants and clean. The Clarion Williamsburg has none of this. Who knows the condition of possible future accommodations.

Th e material that you sent before the program contained several extra useless pages that we had to copy if we copied the material. The fact that we copy saves you money- that is fine, but when we copy you should not include extra blank page for use to copy!

I thought this was a terrific program. Never been much of a history buff, ths now well-versed! This program was so enriching and fascinationg to me. So glad I attended, learned so much and valued the total experience. Enactors, entertainers, interpreters, archaeologists and docents were a wealth of knowledge with warm, kind and helpful "teaching" styles. The Clarion had a friendly serving staff. I'd have to say this was the best Elderhostel/Road Scholar trip I've ever been on 95% of which have all been terrific! Can't wait for the next one! Decisions, decisions, decisions ...

This was our first Road Scholar experience, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The lecturers, the performers, the scheduling, the accommodations, the food, the pace, and the director were all perfect for us. We highly recommend it.

We participated in the April 28, 2013 program and enjoyed it very much! The lecturers were all knowledgeable and most were very effective speakers. All the performers were outstanding! Our field trips were Historic Jamestowne, Jamestown Settlement, Colonial Williamsburg (CW) and Yorktown, in order of attendance. We loved Colonial Williamsburg and wished we had two days there at least, instead of Yorktown which was our least favorite. The problem with Yorktown was it was rushed. We saw a film at the Visitor's Center but had no time to explore. We felt there should have been more time there or drop that trip entirely in favor of another CW day. The food was quite good. The accomodations were adequate though this Clarion needs some updating. For example there was no microphone for our speakers in a large meeting room, the Wifi signal was inconsistent, the in-room safe was not useable and our room key gave us trouble the whole week! However, it is quite convenient to the planned events and most of the staff were wonderful!
