If you go on this trip, you'll know you've hiked on one of the most "respected" segments of the AT. The overall elevation isn't too tough, but the rocky terrain will challenge you. It made for a lot of groans, some creative teamwork in crossing streams, and generally a terrific bonding experience with the guides and other participants! The inn, the food, and other programs were great. In spite of the less-than-perfect weather we experienced, I'd definitely do it again.

This program is well planned and an excellent way to discover whether you want to hike more on the Appalachian Trail. I learned a lot about the flora and the fauna in the area.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Hiking the Appalachian Trail program and am encouraged to do more hiking because of it. Currently, I am more of a walker than a hiker, but I am in good shape. The hiking aspect was challenging, but everyone could hike at his or her own comfort level, something I appreciated immensely as nobody had to hike with a group that they felt they would always be the last one to the rest stop. Although I had no trouble walking in low-top boots, I would have preferred my high-tops because the terrain was rocky, which was acknowledged in the information, but was not described clearly. I would say the trails we hiked were often like very uneven broken cobblestone with frequent larger and sharp rocks interspersed.

This was my first Road Scholar Program, and I am hooked. I spent an active week challenging myself, making new friends, and sneaking in some relaxing spa time too. The guided hikes covered varied terrain, always pretty rocky, but the vistas were worth the effort. Highlights for me included climbing a fire tower at the invitation of the resident spotter, taking a fascinating night hike with a naturalist, and passing through amazingly tall groves of rhododendrons. The guides were friendly and entertaining. The Shawnee Institute director bent over backwards to accommodate our group under some challenging conditions that were out of her control. It is important to be flexible and adaptable on this trip, because weather and other circumstances can make the daily schedule subject to last minute changes. Great service from the entire staff of the Shawnee Inn. The food was excellent and plentiful. (And you get a surprise cookie on your pillow at night!) I am already checking out the catalog for my next adventure.

I thoroughly enjoyed this hiking program based at the Shawnee Inn. The hikes were challenging but because we had three different alternate hiking choices each day, we could pick according to our level of expertise. The food on this trip was excellent!! And the people in our group were awesome! I've been on about a dozen RS programs and I think this this group got along the best of all of them, in my experience!! For you hikers who have never hike the AT before, be read y for very rocky and stony trails, which makes for some pretty slow going. That was a surprise to me, but we all manages just fine. Overall, I really enjoyed this program. Thank you!

Another superb hiking program put on by Cindy Miano, master of her craft of making everything work. Terrific hiking leaders and naturalists accompanied our challenging hikes. Food and accommodations at the historic Shawnee Inn were top notch. If you are up to the challenge of hiking eleven plus miles a day over rocky and rough terrain on the Appalachian Trail, this is the trip for you.

A fun and active getaway at a lovely historic hotel. I recommend this trip if you enjoy hiking and nature without staying in a rustic environment. The Shawnee Inn had just the right touch of old world elegance. Great trip.

Well organized hiking adventure. Hiking is on rocky, steep trails; sturdy hiking boots are a necessity as is a walking stick or hiking poles. Physical stamina is necessary to enjoy the hikes.

My experience hiking the appalachian trail (delaware water gap, shawnee, PA) was the best......warts and wens are part of the program/experience ...... (my judgment) our leader/Program Director/Coordinator - whatever - is the absolute BEST .... and the naturalist/instructor/leader Rick Kovac(s) has a skill-set, compassion, warmth and ability to communicate beyond my wildest dreams. I received gifts I never even imagined for myself simply by doing this RS trip......thank you Road Scholar, Cindy, Rick, Len and all the other staff who made this happen.

Beautiful area to hike and explore. The program has great leaders and a variety of activities. The hotel pool and hot tub were perfect after hiking. The food was excellent and plentiful. We had two nights of musical entertainment on the lawn and canoeing that made the experience varied. The companionship was delightful and our group had a positive attitude and energy to lift anyone who was tired. Special thanks to Cindy for caring for e needs of each of us. And to Pat for taking us to the bus!

I'll be sharing photos soon, including proof positive of our bear encounter. Thanks for making the adventure a memorable one my now friends! Cindy
