See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip with Ryan and Dan. They provided everything we needed and more. I liked the idea that this was a photo field experience, so we could ask for help when needed. They took us to some of the most scenic areas of both parks, and Ryan even cleaned our bus windows every morning so we could photograph from the windows if we saw wildlife--like bison--along the road. Enjoyed the people, the food, and the lodging in the Old Faithful Snow Lodge cottages.

The Advanced Nature Photography in Yellowstone and Grand Teton program is excellent for anyone interested in photography. All levels of photographic knowledge are adequate for participation in this program, which is well organized and has great leadership. If you are relatively new to photography, you will learn a lot with this program.

This is a program suitable for all levels of photographers – there is always something new to learn, and enough time to do your own thing should you choose. The advantage of a smallish group being shown the many locations of photographic interest in both parks at the right times of day, in a comfortable coach, can’t be denied! All in all, our first Road Scholar adventure exceeded our expectations and provided us with wonderful memories and memorable photos! Thanks, Ryan and Drew, for your tireless enthusiasm, assistance, and groan-worthy jokes.

Timothy from New York, NY Number of programs attended: 2

This program is just right for the person who is experienced in photography, but wants to improve their skills. ....And this can happen in two of our most beautiful national parks. I personally learned a great deal, enjoyed the early morning photo shoots to watch the light move over the mountains and experienced nature on a new level. As the saying goes...just do it! You won't regret it.

William from Clarkston, WA Number of programs attended: 1

If you have an interest in photography, you would like to expand your skills and learn to get the most from your equipment, you value quality instruction from professionals, and you want to see a wide variety of interesting landscapes and patterns presented in ideal lighting conditions, then this is the program for you. I came into the program with high expectations and these expectations were exceeded on almost every front.

This program was so very well planned and executed. The leadership made the experience go smoothly. The pacing was fine and the photographic opportunities were outstanding.

This was an outstanding photographic, educational, scenic workshop. I would highly recommend it and would love to do it again! The instruction was excellent and the accommodations, particularly at Yellowstone, were also excellent. And the food was outstanding.

This was one of the best programs I've ever done. Food, accommodations, other participants - all were terrific. But the best parts of the program were the breath-taking scenery of Yellowstone and the Tetons and the wonderful people from Mountains and Plains Institute. Our leader Ryan and our instructors Robert and Drew shared their knowledge and passion for photography and for this magnificent part of the country. I learned so much and had such a good time. The day at Earthfire Institute provided us with a life-changing view of the interaction between humans and wildlife. I would recommend this program for anyone interested in photography and the beauty of nature. I look forward to doing another program with Mountains and Plains Institute.

Dianne from Moore, SC Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/22/13 - 09/28/13
This workshop exceeded all my expectations. My primary purpose for going to it was to see the sites, the photography was secondary. I did not feel comfortable using my expensive camera and felt that I would be left in the dust of other participants who were semiprofessional photographers. That was not the case at all. The leaders and the participants were very helpful in the steep learning curve I experienced as I learned how to use my instrument. It was an amazing workshop that will forever be burned into my memory!! This was a wonderful way to begin my experience with Road Scholars!! I encourage you to sign up before all the slots are taken!

Polly from Chico, CA Number of programs attended: 18

This is a terrific photography program. The Tetons and Yellowstone are so different, but each park had excellent sites to photograph. Great parks, great leaders, great beauty!

If you have an interest in photography, a love of nature and a desire to enhance your skills or just enjoy the company on a terrific RoadScholar trip, don't miss the Mountain and Plains Institute adventure to Yellowstone and the Tetons advanced Nature Photography outing. Don't let "advanced" dampen your enthusiasm . The leaders and photography instructors are so knowledgeable and patient, photographers of all levels benefit from their instruction. This program is one of the best I have experienced! Everyone in our cohot agreed.
