I would never have known about or experienced the natural beauty and geological richness of the Oregon Coast if I had not participated in this program. Lynn and Carol Unser radiate their infectious love and enthusiasm for the region with every presentation. Their many years of experience greatly helps, for the tour was very efficiently organized. It might seem a bit pricey, but you get a lot of "bang for the buck" activities, clean quiet lodging and most meals. Go and you won't regret it.

An old friend once spoke glowingly of the Oregon coast. Years later, seeking a Road Scholar program in which to enroll, this one seemed interesting, with the bonus inland attractions of Crater Lake and the Avenue of the Giants. It's not likely that Steve understood the whole tapestry of what the state has to offer, as seen through the amazingly diverse ecosystems traversed. The coastline road swooped and swerved along rocky terrain dotted with lighthouses, then suddenly morphed into a miles-long range of massive sand dunes. This topographic feat (and others) were vividly explained by co-leader Carol Unser, whose encyclopedic knowledge of not only geology but also flora and fauna made this the sort of in-depth learning experience that Road Scholar advertises. Co-leader Lynn Unser presented a business/industry historiography emphasizing the timbering and fishing industries. Their combined efforts created a virtual "university on wheels." Since the program requires substantial road travel to reach all the destinations, an "active" designation really does not seem applicable. The only other caveat concerns the Rogue River jet boat excursion; while the boat is indeed fast and maneuverable, more impressive was the patience with which the pilot glided along the river banks to point out wildlife which a purely speed-oriented craft certainly would have missed.

I've been Unser-ized. Do anything with these two - you can't go wrong with Carol and Lynn.

Although Oregon has many similarities to California coastline, mountains, forests, rivers, lava beds and volcanic mountains i had a great time on this tour. Carol a very knowledgable academic and passionate teacher brought to the forefront much digestable information in a fun filled way. I knew general information about the geological forces that formed the land but she tied it all together in a much more detailed way as we visited places that were affected by these forces. Her husband, Lynn, a man with practical experience as a logger, commercial fisherman and multi-generational resident of the Oregon coast provided a balance. I would love to hear more stories from Lynn. Of couse, Oregon and the coast and redwood forests of the Humbolt California are diverse and beautiful. Even as a long time visitor to the redwood forests, i am always in awe by the magnificence of ancient old growth trees. For any from the corn and soy bean fields of the midwest, the south or the Atlantic Coast this tour should be a revelation and a chance to experience why so many have come to live or just visit the left coast of the USA.

Our trip to the Oregon coast exceeded our expectations by a mile. Lynne and Carol and our driver Tim worked very close as a team and showed the rest of us the maximum sights for the time we had. Their knowledge of the entire trip was top shelf. No one could see and learn this much without their guidance. I had a good time with everyone as well. Bob and Jeanne Meyer

My husband and I had a very rewarding experience on our trip to Oregon. The Unsers were amazing teachers. They enjoy what they are doing. We saw many beautiful sights in Oregon and Northern California I would highly recommend this program.

This is a wonderful program if you want to know what Oregon is all about. Great guides, bus driver and more knowledge than most people can comprehend. Super!!!

This program reveals parts of Oregon which a person would be unlikely to discover just by driving through. The dunes were especially surprising. There were some spots that would have been nice to visit, such as the sea lion caves and the lava tubes, but in order to include them the trip would have to be a day or two longer.

Stuart from Scottsdale, AZ Number of programs attended: 4

This was an absolutely wonderful program! Each day was better than the last...spectacular scenery, fun activities and great guides and bus driver. We really enjoyed every minute.

This program took us down the Oregon coast to experience the ocean, rivers, dunes, redwoods in California, the Oregon cave monument, Newberry volcano monument, and Multnomah Falls. Each of these unusual sites were enhanced by our guide's commentaries and videos providing a context for the culture and geography we were to see. A delightful experience!

The driver and guide were outstanding. Many items on my bucket list (Oregon caves, redwoods, crater lake) have now been met. Was surprised at the variety of climates in Oregon. Road Scholars had great locations for the stay.

I definitely agree with all the positive reviews here - the scenery is beautiful and learning about the geology of the area fascinating. We were fortunate to have a group of only 18 very congenial people who all seemed to be having a great time. Carol and Lynn are excellent and knowledgeable guides and Tim did a great job with the bus. Highly recommend.

On the Road: The Oregon Coast, California Redwoods and Crater Lake was an amazing well planned trip. It exceeded my expectations throughout as it had both wonderful sights to see and experienced, friendly and enthusiastic leaders sharing their knowledge freely with participants.

If you can only visit Oregon and Northern California once, this is the trip to take. The Oregon Coast, Californis Redwoods, Crater Lake, Multnomah Falls and the Columbia Gorge are a must see. In addition the group leaders know many little known or out-of-the way places that are just great to see and visit. Lynn and Carol Unser who lead this tour are exceptional group leaders. Their breadth and depth of knowledge of the areas we visited was amazing. The third member of the team, bus driver Tim, is a top notch pro at handling the bus. He was always helpful and friendly and contributed significantly to the overall success of the program. By the end of the programs you felt that the three of them were old friends whom you had known for a long time. Just a wonderful experience that exceeded high expectations

Nancy (Rush) eloquently shared my feelings. What a great program! I definitely will share my thoughts and feelings with my colleagues. I would not hesitate to recommend the program and Carol, Lynn and Tim to all interested in the history, culture and sciences associated with the NW US.

What a wonderful total experience- program leaders, programming and co-attendees. The combined knowledge and experience of the co-leaders made this a "must do" program for all people who want to experience great scenery and learn more about the interdependence between nature and culture. Information was presented in a most memorable way- not at all "talking heads." Juan de Fuco would be proud that his efforts are being commemorated in a most outstanding way.

This program is a great introduction to the Oregon and northern California coast. If you have never been there before, this is as good as it gets. In addition you meet curious and congenial people like yourself, and leaders who tie together the whole experience.

The Oregon Coastal Journey tour far exceeded my expectations. I never expected to learn so much about geology in such an enjoyable way. (I now want to learn more!) Carol and Lynn Unser were incredible instructors. They presented so much educational content in such a fun way. The activities, such as the dune buggy and jet boat, were also fun as well as relevant to the content. The scenery was incredible and came alive under the instructors' leadership. Their sense of humor made the entire experience fun as well as educational. They made an effort to know the individual participants and to build group cohesion. They mingled with the group members during meals rather than sitting apart. They made Tim, the bus driver, an integral part of the team which he deserved. The entire tour experience was top-notch!

This is a wonderful program. The scenery is amazingly varied, the accommodations great, the bus very comfortable, and the Lynn and Carol are the best tour leaders. The weather in fall was pefect, just keep in mind it's cold on the coast.

Many stunning sights from the oceanside to the redwoods to the marble caves. A great trip, with meals ranging from superb to let-me-outta-here on the latter part of the trip. I especially enjoyed the oceanside hotels as well as the Chateau on top of the mountain where we were the only guests. This part of the country is truly beautiful.

A great vacation! The wonderful beauty and coolness of the coast, lushness of the mountain trails, visits to some lighthouses, a dune buggy ride over the amazing sand dunes, an exhilarating jet boat ride up the Rogue River, the majestic redwoods, an interesting mountain cave to explore, a fascinating walk through the lava lands, the stunning beauty of Crater Lake, and a picturesque seaside village to shop! Fine accommodations, tasty food, good bus and driver, wonderful group and great tour guides -- what more can I say?

We just returned from a trip on the Oregon coast. It was a well organized and planned adventure. Could not have asked for a better group to spend our time with. Instructors, lodging and meals were wonderful. Granted the weather was great but I do believe we would have had a good time no matter what. Thanks to all for a great trip. Even our bus driver Veril also known as DABD made this a good time for all. Al & Carla
