The African Safari my wife and I just returned from fulfilled a dream we've held for 45 years ago. We have done some pretty serious traveling but this trip was one of the best. It was our first Road Scholars Adventure and it exceeded our expectations in every way. We are already trying to decide where to go next.

Nov 3-16, 2015 African Safari: A Close-up on Wildlife 9 participants/I was the only single Melrose Place Guest Lodge-Soweto tour. David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa-along the Zambezi River; bush walks; Victoria Falls rainbow; local crafts market; Livingstone Museum; cross Victoria Falls Bridge. Victoria Falls Rainforest Park. Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge-on the Zambezi River; Impalas sleep on the lawn; game drives; game-viewing platoon cruise on the Zambezi River; night drive. Chobe National Park with 2,200 elephants-game drive; game-viewing platoon cruise on the Chobe River. Ivory Lodge-mineral lake in front of viewing hide attracts the Presidential elephants; game drives in Hwange National Park; night game drive; bush walk; Painted Dog Facility; Troup entertainment. A'Zambezi River Lodge–traditional village; elephant ride, dinner at the BOMA. Andrew Schofield, Awesome Group Leader, the biggest factor for my trip rating of 10/10. Andrew, who worked in the bush 41 years and lived the life of his beloved creatures, continuously shared the wonders of Africa. Andrew’s enthusiasm was contagious. His words radiated to us: “This doesn’t happen” to see two relaxed breeding herds of elephants with babies have a dust spa, then greet each other before swimming across the Zambezi; “Amazing” to find a leopard resting in a log by tracking fresh prey drag marks in Chobe; “It is magic” to discover along the road to Hwange two lions sleeping under trees after eating a baby elephant carcass (the bush telegraph helped). Andrew maintained “PuLi, PuLi, Zen” ambience at airports (9-min international flight-Victoria Falls to Livingstone) and border crossings and photographed the trip. In Andrew’s “off duty time”- Andrew accompanied me on a walking safari concentrating on 8 white rhino. Andrew accompanied the group to the 1904 Victoria Falls Hotel and guided a walk to Batoka Gorge, then lunch on the Stanley Terrace with a view of the Victoria Falls Bridge and train.

Wonderful blend of Southern Africa safaris in the Victoria Falls area and interesting city visits in South Africa.

On October 23rd my wife & I participated in our first Road Scholar program. We were joined by 12 others in an African Safari, followed by The Best of Cape Town, an optional program extension. We can't say enough about this trip. The itinerary was superb, the Group Leaders terrific, and the accommodations beyond our expectations. I created a 53 minute YouTube video to highlight both of these programs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBbvDOv8cDY For those interested only in the African Safari program this 36 minute YouTube video represents the first 14 days of our 19 day adventure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQAV68yZH-E Finally, anyone interested in only The Best of Cape Town extension can view this 17 minute YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoyPnPb8X74

I wanted to see the countries, meet the people and the animals were in third place. Well, the animals blew me away. It was more exciting than I had anticipated. It was good to go before the rainy season as the animals gathered around waterholes and were easier to find. I also enjoyed seeing Victoria Falls WITHOUT all the water we see in all the pictures. Without all the mist, we could really see the whole of the falls. The people were outstanding - the guides, the drivers, the street vendors etc.- big smiles and welcoming.

This program was more than I could have ever wished for. Seeing the animals as nature intended them was a very poignant experience and well worth the time in the safari vehicles. Our guide was outstanding in his knowledge. I would highly recommend this program for those seeking the ultimate nature experience!

The trip was different from what I anticipated for my first visit to South Africa. That being said, I had a great time. The opportunity to see so many animals up close, the mixture of accommodations and the interactions with my fellow travelers and local residents provided an experience that I will fondly remember. The trip was enhanced by the knowledge and professionalism of our tour guide, drivers, local guides and the staff at the various lodging sites. The extension to Cape Town was the perfect ending.

To see animals in their natural habitat is amazing! It is hard to get this program out of my mind (and a return trip to Africa might be in my future). Victoria Falls is a sight to behold, the Cape Town extension was well worth the extra time, and the guides and leaders were great! Go!!

This program is a great introduction to Southern Africa's people, history, geography, wildlife and the safari experience. It does require a small step outside one's comfort zone, but the rewards vastly outweigh any transient discomfort. If the group size is limited to 10-12 people, it can be fabulous. Just go!!

This is a trip that will always be a highlight in my travels. The accommodations and food were excellent, and the settings were stunning. The guides were very knowledgeable and put us on a wide range of animals, even though this time of year finds the large herds more disbursed. The people we met were warm, welcoming, and obviously eager to share their countries. I would highly recommend this trip if you've ever considered experiencing Africa.

Very good over the top trip of a lifetime. I caution people wanting to take this trip, to lobby Road Scholar to limit the number of participants to no more than twelve or less. We had seventeen plus guide and two drivers, on game drives, for a total of twenty! Everyone goes to Africa to see animals, not scare them off with a herd of people. I loved this trip very much but way to many people to quietly see wildlife close up.

A perfect introduction to Southern Africa. Wonderful, exciting experiences, viewing wildlife in camp, on drives and river excursions. Varied opportunities to meet the people and learn a little about them and their countries. All the time being led and cared for by an exceptional tour guide, Benson Siyawareva who was committed to ensuring that we had the best trip possible.

What a fabulous program this is! It is a perfect blend of things to see and do in urban areas and exciting adventures in the bush. Our guide was superb, the food and accommodations were fantastic and the animals all cooperated in letting us get a look at them. Whether you travel on this program in the wet season or in the dry, you will see LOTS of them. My experiences on this program far exceeded all of my expectations.

This is a trip not to be missed -- the trip of a lifetime. Great guides, amazing experiences in the bush, fascinating accommodations, unexpected beauty and wonder. Not a day or hour that was a disappointment.

This is a delightful trip with many, many birds and animals. However, we did not see Victoria Falls in all its splendor because the falls are dry in October/November when we took our trip. Instead we saw bare rock cliffs as we walked along the trail and pictures of what the falls would have looked like if there had been water.

I highly recommend this trip, along with the extension to Cape Town. Book the wildlife tour with Benson Siyawareva as your guide. You will be well taken care of, advised in advance of possible issues (i.e., border crossing, etc.), and you will be blown away by his knowledge and heart. You will have MANY "Wow!" moments, including Johannesburg, Victoria Falls, and wildlife viewing. The game lodges are top notch. I arrived a day early to Johannesburg and recommend the red "Hop On Hop Off" two hour bus tour. It gave me a better overview of Jozi. Also, if you take the Cape Town extension, you might enjoy an extra day or two there. The flight to and from CT is grueling (30 travel hours on the return, to Seattle), but worth it. You need the Malaria pills and Yellow Fever shot or a note from your MD saying you are exempted.
