Road Scholar
Program #2019RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

My wife and I are still talking up this Road Scholar experience to our friends. Many high points, including the field hikes, classroom presentations, the Island Creamery ice cream shop, NASA museum in Wallops, clam bake, the Island Creamery ice cream shop, etc. (We like ice cream.) The boat trip was, shall we say, "bracing." Brrr. We went back to Chincoteague, the NASA Museum and the Chincoteague Library (and town) on our own after getting the tour. The birds had obviously not read the course syllabus. So, not as many showed up as expected. But, kudos to the Center and the staff. We learned a lot. Well scheduled and executed. Great work!

It was very cold! there weren't any migrating flock of birds to be seen! Disappointing experienc. Food was soo-so (all school cafetaria food) and lead staff was patronizing in their cheerfulness to "old people".

Beautiful area and a great program. Would recommend it to other birders.

I am very much a beginning birder. The staff was very accomodating to my needs and answered all questions, were patient with my inability to see what they saw in the field and did everything to help me see the birds. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly, the accommodations were adequate and the food good. I would recommend this program to anybody interested in birds. There are many on the eastern shore at this time.

This program is extremely well organized and in a delightful setting, as well as being just at the right time to identify over 100 bird varieties who are year-round and/or on the flyway residents! Lots of variety in the area walks, meals, educational evening programs. The staff is exceptional in both their knowledge and organization. Loved all parts of this wonderful program.

This is a great birding trip for any level birder. We observed a number of shorebirds and waders at the Assateague National Seashore and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. While on the boat trip in the estuary off Wallops Island we observed a Clapper Rail setting out in the open preening. Our trips to Kiptopeke State Park and Pocomoke State Park added a number of warblers to our list. All of the staff are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. . I recommend this trip for anybody that likes the outdoors and birds.

This program provides the opportunity to see birds in a variety of Eastern Shore habitats. The staff is well-informed and enthusiastic, and the program is very well-organized. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lots of birds to see in an interesting area. Our leaders were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The research station is comparable to a college-like setting in terms of food and accommodations. Everything was clean & comfortable & the food was varied and wholesome, but this isn't a luxury vacation. We received excellent value for the price of this program.

This trip was one of the best birding trips that I have yet experienced. We started out with a cold rain; but that did not deter us from getting off the bus to look at a great variety of shorebirds. A trip to Kiptopeke State Park added warblers and a very cooperative Orchard Oriole to our list, a very close look at an Osprey on a piling nest, and several close Loons in breeding plumage. A boat ride in the Channel gave us close views of Black Skimmers, Ruddy Turnstones, and Bald Eagles. If you ever wanted to see Prothonotary Warblers up close and personal, the great staff from the Marine Science Consortium will take you to Pocomoke State Park, Shad River Landing. The staff really made this trip worthwhile. They were enthusiastic, helpful, and had very useful information about the birds and local ecology. I cannot say enough positive about them.
