It is remarkable that even I could weave a basket with a lot of help from a very patient Jean. I was a wonderful learning experience meeting some bright educated people and having a good rest. Thank you all for sharing with me,my wife, and my daughter. Mickey

What a fantastic week! As a coiler of eight years, I came for stimulation, to learn new techniques, and to share. I was not disappointed! The Coastal Basketry and Barrier Island Ecology Program is excellent. Jean Koon is an excellent teacher! She readily shared her techniques and encouraged our ideas. I have come away quite stimulated to pursue new ideas and forms for my baskets! Jean is also an excellent teacher for the beginner coiler. We all benefited by her direction and guidance. The Chincoteague Bay Station Staff were always friendly, helpful and always accommodating. It was truly a week well spent and a joyful break from the winter "blues" for me! Thank you all!

The Coastal Basketry and Barrier Island Discovery Program exceeded all expectations for me. Jean Poythress Koon is an exemplary teacher and muse. She has a gift for encouraging and inspiring each participant, opening a world of possibilities using materials found in nature. With Jean's guidance, everyone made at least two baskets. The staff at the Field Station took care of our needs with generosity and excellent planning. Our days and evenings were filled with memorable experiences, great food and company. I highly recommend this program to anyone interested in learning the art of making pine needle baskets that are unique and beautiful.

I highly recommend the Coastal Basketry and Barrier Island Ecology Program. The instructor, Jean Koon, was terrific! I completed three coiled baskets during the program and left with the confidence and that I could complete a basket in progress and create new ones in the future. The Field Station staff could not have been more friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. I would rank this program very high for overall value and educational enrichment.

If you want to learn a "craft" that is useful and timeless, this is a great way to get your feet wet. The instructor took all levels and dealt with those of us with no experience while challenging some of the participants who had basket skills. We all learned something.

I can't say enough nice things about the basketry and barrier island ecology class. The staff at the field station were always cheerful, helpful and gracious. Jean was an excellent instructor and master basket maker. I was very happy with my finished baskets and enjoyed using different materials. Gretchen

Just returned from the April session of the GREAT program - excellent instructor, comfortable accommodations and very friendly and helpful Field Station staff. My wonderful fellow students and I learned a lot!

This program was a wonderful break from the winter weather we have been having in the northeast this year. Jean is an excellent instructor. Her years as an educator have given her the experience to relax and enjoy her students. As a result, we all relaxed and enjoyed each other. Each person was able to visualize a basket which they wanted to make and Jean was able to guide them through any obstacles. Soon we were able to help each other problem solve as the baskets developed. The weather on our field trips was bright, sunny and warmer than home so it truly felt like a seaside vacation. The marshlands in this area are lovely. I plan to try to capture them in a watercolor. I will not forget this workshop or the people I met. Try it.

With the guidance of a skilled teacher I was able to complete 3 baskets that I am very proud of. In addition to learning about coil basketry, there were wonderful field trips to beaches on Wallops Island and a tour of Assateague. I finally have seen some of the famous ponies! I had a fabulous week here.

Donna from Dearborn, MI Number of programs attended: 1

Can't tell you how much I really loved this program. Great value, great teacher, great facility and hosts, and a great group of women from the New York, Georgia, Virginia and Michigan. With Jean's help, I came home with three beautiful baskets, an appreciation for ditches and a new skill. Great value for the money too!! The Marine Consortium was a great host facility with interesting lectures by Tara, really reasonable meals, and spotless accomodations.

If you can get a basket weaving course lead by Jean P. Koon, take it. Even if you don't think you will like basket weaving, you will.
