Beautiful scenery and great leaders and participants made this a wonderful trip. Darrell is very knowledgeable and added much to our understanding of the geology, flora, fauna, history - all were covered. The hikes weren't too rigorous for the most part, but we got a good workout most days. Paula and Paul rounded out the team; all logistics were handled smoothly and pleasantly. We highly recommend this program!

Paula, Darrell and Paul helped to make this program a wonderful experience. They truly love Utah and all it offers and enjoy sharing that with us. It was a moderately challenging program and even us hikers from the midwest and south were able to safely do it.

If you are interested in a beautiful, unique, awesome hiking experience, this might be the program for you! The leaders (Gary and Sherry) are top-notch.

If you decide to go on this trip, you'll be out and about early, hiking and sometimes scrambling up and down mountain sides for most of the day. Lunch is packed and eaten on the go either at a picnic site or in the field. Several of the evening sit down dinners were actually top notch. The guides are very energetic and if you follow their lead, you'll see some of the most amazing landscape views ever! And you will also be very tired. Hiking poles can be provided if you forget yours. But try to bring your own. Do some mountain hiking on your own before the trip. Prepare for some upslope challenges. Lowlanders will need to adjust to the mountainous elevations. If you've never been to Bryce, it'll be a never-to-be-forgotten experience

Well-designed itinerary and excellent rapport among leaders Sherry, Gary and Tam made this trip a winner. Surprising wildflowers due to recent rain and snow.

This program was my first Road Scholar experience, but it won't be my last! I came right home and looked for more trips to take and have signed both my husband and me up for a winter trip to Yellowstone and have others in mind too. Although I didn't find the hikes challenging, they were lovely, and the relaxed pace allowed plenty of time for taking photographs. Our leaders, Gary and Sherry, and Tammy, our bus driver, were all fun, entertaining, encouraging, helpful, and knowledgeable. The other participants were also fun and interesting and prompt! We saw lots and lots of gorgeous scenery and slept and ate well. Our bus was large enough to allow everyone to spread out and was very comfortable. All in all, a super trip all the way around. The bar was set high!

This program is a collection of short hikes in beautiful areas, usually adding up to 4-6 miles a day on foot. There is so much beauty spread over such distance. The leaders Sherry and Gary were excellent, informative and encouraging. Everything ran smoothly. Tammy the bus driver was constantly helpful with providing water and comfort. As usual, the participants added to the enjoyment of the program. This is one of the best we've attended, and we could see repeating it.

Linda from Cary, NC Number of programs attended: 2

Leader Sherry and instructor Gary are both knowledgeable and enthusiastic and clearly enjoy sharing the beautiful area and its history. Bus driver Tammy is expert at transporting us safely. Good humor and great information and stories. Sherry and Gary adapted hikes to the group's collective ability and interests and took us to wonderful places we would not otherwise have seen. This was a great program and October is the perfect time of year for it.

Paula and Darrell McMahon are a great team, working together to ensure that each member of the group is at ease and achieves their full potential during the program--and we had an amazing amount of fun doing it too!

This was my 11th or 12th Road Scholar program and I would say it ranks as one of the best, if not THE best, of the bunch. Informative, spectacular scenery, doable hikes, fun people, nice lodging. decent food...outstanding in every way. Darrel and Paula are superb trip leaders: organized, extremely knowledgeable, humorous, low key, with little ego. But just remember that you are in Mormon country here. And, as successful as they were in keeping this trip neutral in that respect, it finally showed its face during the last evening. The bus driver just had to give his testimony and quote Scripture regarding what he felt was Biblical justification for the Mormon's belief in baptism of the dead. In my opinion, this had no place in this kind of RS program and felt it inappropriate. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this program to anyone. Just remember where you are when you go to Utah.

This was my first Road Scholar trip but will NOT be my last. I loved it! Our leaders Darryl and Paula were great. I learned so much on this trip. Made friends I plan to keep in contact with. Really looking forward to another one soon.

This was a perfect first trip. The leaders, Darrell and Paula, were perfect in every way. And, of course, the scenery and hikes were an unforgettable experience, too. Don't miss out on this program!!

Paul from New York, NY Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 05/19/14 - 05/26/14
This is a great program. Breathtaking scenery and wonderful hiking. Each National Park is so different - you find yourself in a completely different environment each day. Our guides were also excellent - knowledgable, experienced, hard working and friendly. While very different from each other, they were all completely dedicated to helping every member of the group have a good time. Be prepared for a couple of fairly long travel days by bus, since the Parks are spread out, but it was truly worth the trek. I would definitely recommend for both new and for experienced Road Scholars.

As my maiden voyage with Road Scholar, I was utterly impressed. The program was implemented with precision and expertise. It was run like a well oiled piece of machinery. Our group of 26*, as a whole, were not demanding, however, if we needed something, anything, such as a curling iron, phone charger, or to stargaze on an overcast evening, Gary, Sherry and Fred were right on it! Each facilitator had there own special knowledge, which when brought together, made for a terrific, educational and unforgettable experience. *The 26 included the Gary, Sherry and Fred, as they were "one of us!"

This was my first Road Scholar trip and easily one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Our leaders, Gary and Sherry and our bus driver, Fred guided us and helped make the week even more special with their expertise and enthusiasm. This was an unforgettable experience. I've recommended this program to all my friends.
