Program #1208RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Marvelously organized and presented, and fun. The rooms are spartan but just fine.

Priscilla from Mesa, AZ Number of programs attended: 8
Date attended: 08/24/14 - 08/29/14
This was my 8th Road tour, including Lewis/Clark. The food & presentations were excellent. But the logistics in getting there were horrific! I called Road to get info, but no help. My room was Spartan with filthy carpet. No clock, or radio. I'm not a camper & no warning. I was thankful for the use of a computer on the "free day" with no car. Road needs to get a better handle on the accommodations.

Road Scholar's response:
We are sorry to hear of the issues you had with the accommodations. To address your comments, we do have an off-campus upgraded accommodation option available on most program dates. The campus rooms are scheduled to be remodeled this month.

What fun the Best of Monterey was. So varied and fascinating.! Unexpectedly so. An actor portraying writers of the area, Joplin music, exercise, trips, science, magicians, and tasting. And of corse the coast and amazing aquarium. I loved it and am so refreshed.

I was very impressed with the program.

Lee Ann from Saint Paul, MN Number of programs attended: 3

The ideal winter get-away. Sunshine. Pacific Ocean. Knowledgeable presenters on Steinbeck, Joplin, London.
Daily exercise. Accomodations at Hidden Valley INN were fine.

John from Cary, NC Number of programs attended: 33

Excellent program.

Laurie from Chula Vista, CA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/08/13 - 09/13/13
People should know these things about this tour: The accommodations are quite poor. There is no housekeeping, the Inn is rustic and poorly maintained (cracks in plaster and walls, broken window frame, exposed wiring, outlets did not hold plug, rotted out seat on deck chair, no air conditioning, broken towel holder, flies, etc.) Second, the area is not safe for mobility challenged seniors. There are no grab bars in the showers, the area to be walked is dark, uneven and without paths, no railing on bridge, it is a long way from rooms to meeting hall, etc. Next, the bus for field trips is ancient, has no air conditioning and the windows barely open. Note the reference to air conditioning. Contrary to the information provided by Road Scholar, this Inn is NOT in Monterey but in Carmel Valley, and it is MUCH hotter then the temperatures given in written materials for Monterey. Further, the Road Scholar staff were rarely present. On the plus side the presentations were excellent and the field tours very good. However, because of the poor accommodations and lack of safety, we will almost certainly not return to any Monterey tours located at Hidden Valley Inn (which, by the way, is very hard to find from the road).
