Beautiful cities with excellent local guides. Program omits a lot of meals, mostly lunches. Coordinator left a lot to be desired in knowledge of cities and Spain. Barcelona is a city no one should not miss for its architecture, wide avenues, upscale shopping, and great food. Madrid is the place to see art with several top museums to cover in free time. Program needs changes for very good rating.

This trip to Barcelona and Madrid was my first Road Scholar experience. It was interesting, informative and educational. And the highlight was making new friends! I would recommend Road Scholar to anyone wanting to learn and have fun!

I would recommend this trip to anyone. Barcelona and Madrid were amazing and the local experts available to us made it so easy to learn a lot in a short period.

Terrific for those who appreciate art and architecture.

THis is an excellent trip for an introduction to Barcelona and Madrid. It has a diversity of experiences and offers much education about the highlights of each city. The hotel in Barcelona is excellently located in a safe and convenient area. It is noisy and you can feel the underground subway in the rooms on the first floors. The hotel in Madrid is very luxurious and adequately located for a big city. Overall, this is a wonderful way to see the combination of art, architecture, beauty and delicious food that Spain has to offer. It is a magnificently colorful and exciting country. And it was an experience to be on the high-speed train to Madrid over the countryside.

This was a wonderful trip with a great group of travel companions. And our guide Luis was more than accommodating, offering to take us to various museums and sites during our free time. He was very thoughtful of our ages/energy levels.

Lynne from Flourtown, PA Number of programs attended: 28

Wonderful program. We caught the flavor of two great cities, saw some magnificent sights (especially the Gaudi in Barcelona), and ate some of the best food I've ever encountered on a RS trip. It was also nice to have wine with most meals, meet a group of congenial people, and have a helpful, knowledgeable, and attentive group leader like Louis. As mentioned below, this is an active trip with much walking and a need to climb stairs without railings much of the time, so people should be aware of this before signing up.

Outstanding program--not to be missed!

Barcelona and Madrid were magnificent. Very friendly and interesting group of people on the tour. Resourceful and friendly tour leader. Poor tour administration and execution compared to other tours I have taken.

Great trip! The group leader, Luisa, was very helpful in creating a wonderful atmosphere. This program truly hit the highlights of Barcelona and Madrid with enough free time to do your own explorations.

Carl from Los Angeles, CA Number of programs attended: 3

The trip to Barcelona and Madrid was outstanding! We saw a lot, did quite a bit of walking, and enjoyed some very delicious meals. The group was very compatible, and I enjoyed meeting everyone. I highly recommend this trip. Carl Spring, Los Angeles CA

Loved this trip, one of the best ! Although there was a lot of walking, I was able to "flex" and relax a while. Food and drink was excellent, entertainment galore, hotels comfortable, and visits to famous museums was on my bucket list. Luis, our guide was excellent, he saw to everyone's needs and was most helpful. Great job Luis !!!!

Sara from Murfreesboro, TN Date attended: 05/22/15-05/31/15 This is my 3rd RS trip and it was just as filled with knowledge, adventure, and wonderful food and wine as the first two. I, like one of the other reviewers, liked the options to stay with the group or peel off. Can't say enough about the wonderful leadership and the local guides. There will be more RS in my future. Good hotels too. The last afternoon, three of us ate lunch between the Prado visit and the Reina Sofia. We sat outside eating tapas and drinking wine and a local band played in the plaza. I can't imagine a better conclusion to a tour.

This is a very active program! Be prepared for lots of walking and stair climbing! I really enjoyed Barcelona and Segovia--seeing the two-layered Roman aqueducts! Madrid also has lots of restaurants and museums. You will learn how to use the Metro, so getting around is easy! I highly recommend this trip!

For my first visit to Spain I could not have chosen better The Best of Spain: Barcelona and Madrid. Better to see a few places in greater depth than taking valuable time traveling from place to place and changing hotels constantly. The program's concentration on art, history and culture (and cuisine!) prepared me for future trips to explore other parts of Spain.

The program is great but they absolutely refuse to stop sending those catalogs. A big waste of their time and money!

Road Scholar's response:
I am writing to confirm that we have updated your Road Scholar membership to discontinue delivery of our Road Scholar catalogs to your mailing address. As catalog deliveries are processed in advance of requests to be taken off Road Scholar’s mailing list, one more catalog may or may not be delivered to your address prior to final removal. It is always our intention to quickly honor requests to be removed from the mailing list and I do apologize if this issue was not addressed promptly.

CONS: I had a list of things I wanted to see and do during my free time, and I sent this list in advance to Road Scholar asking them to forward it to the group leader. FAIL. PROS: Saw crazy modern and postmodern art, ate like a pig, lost six pounds! Tour leader gave us subway and museum passes and an itinerary that let me join and abandon the group at leisure at several discrete segments of the day. I could play along with the group or go my own way and had all I needed to do both, or a little bit of both each day. More programs that provide this capability, please!!!!

The activity level was certainly as advertised. Food was great (too much!) and the sites chosen gave us a good overview. This made our independent explorations effortless and more tailored to our individual interests. This is my second Road Scholar adventure.

A fine overview of both cities. The guides were excellent, especially Joaquin, the leader who was outstanding both in his knowledge of the area and his kindness, care and attention to the welfare and enjoyment of the attendees...far beyond what might be expected.

What a wonderful adventure in Madrid and Barcelona! Our group was engaging, interesting, and enjoyable throughout the time we had together. I truly believe this experience was exceptional due to our tour guide, Sonia, and her sincere concern for our welfare and fun. Thank you for a fantastic first time adventure with Road Scholar!

We also combined Barcelona/Madrid and the Best of Portugal programs and thoroughly enjoyed them both. Both program leaders were excellent: enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and eager to share. We join Marian below in singing the praises of the RS photographer, Carl, who accompanied us in Spain.

WE combined Spain ( Barcelona and Madrid)along with a Rhodes Scholar trip to Portugal. It was a lengthy trip but a very good combination. We particularly enjoyed Barcelona and using the metro. WE also were surprised at how much we liked Madrid for the location is prime for the major museums. One trip or both you will be happy with the experience and if Carl, the Rhodes Scholar photographer, is part of the group it will be even more fun

Margo from Houston, TX Number of programs attended: 1

If, like me, you want to finally experience Gaudi's architecture up close, this is the trip for you. Madrid's Reina Sofia and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza museums are a treasure trove. And the Prado!

The Best of Spain was our first Road Scholar trip, but won't be our last. Great sites, group leader and instructors. We were sorry when it was over. Just go!

Eileen from Bluffton, SC Number of programs attended: 1

This was our first Roads Scholar experience. It exceeded our expectaions, and we learned so much from our group leader, Luisa, and our instructors. Within a week of returning home, we have booked another trip.

Tamara from Mountainside, NJ Number of programs attended: 13

This is a great program for people who do not want to do the homework themselves, saving them a lot of time and effort. Road Scholar does it for you - all you need to do is follow the leaders! You can be sure they will make it a great experience.

Cindy from Lakewood, CO Number of programs attended: 3

This is a great trip which I highly recommend. Be prepared for lots of walking and many stairs since using the Metro is the method of transportation. So much to see, so little time, but a lot is covered in the time available.

Ray from Chula Vista, CA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 04/25/14 - 05/04/14
What a great tour. Great architecture and great art. Wonderful food in well chosen restaurants. Very helpful guide and lectures.
