Program #7340RJ
12 Days | 11 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

I echo everyone. From Kathleen and Jim with the Morris Thompson Center array of speakers in Fairbanks to the team in Coldfoot including Rick getting us their and back as well as the journey to Atigun pass and then Jack and Heidi in Wiseman and then back to Fairbanks with Karen's wonderful presentation. Kathleen was such a great leader...so calm and cool throughout. I recommend this adventure for all who want to see the norther lights, the tundra, etc., etc. It was fun!

What an amazing trip! The people I met, the beauty of Alaska and the knowledge I gained from this trip will stay with me forever. I can't wait to go back to Alaska and see more and learn more. Thank you Kathleen, Jim, Rick, Ranger Karen, Paula, Laura Lee and everyone in Coldfoot and Wiseman and everyone else for making this trip such a wonderful experience.

This was my second trip to Fairbanks and Coldfoot in March. My first trip was not a Road Scholar trip in 2005, we flew into Anchorage and drove to Fairbanks and Coldfoot. This was my 4th Road Scholar trip, and it was going to the locations that I wanted to visit for Aurora photography and the 2013 World Ice Art Championships. This trip didn't disappoint me. Kathleen & Jim Leitgeb, (Kathleen was our Group Leader)made sure we got to all our scheduled locations during the day and night. But in addition to the normal activities, they made themselves available at anytime for the Aurora viewing and took us to several locations late into the mornings (past midnight). Kathleen gave several lectures about Alaska and the native people. She is an archeologist and worked on the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Kathleen and the other lecturers gave us a lot of insight into living in Alaska and the Arctic in the winter, as well as the other seasons. This was another very enjoyable Road Scholar trip, but Kathleen & Jim Leitgeb made it extra special. Alan

What a magnificent experience. There is no trip we have ever taken that pushed us so far out of our normal life and comfort zone. We saw the world and ourselves as greater than we imagined.

Fairbanks and the Ice Sculpture contest were wonderful. Great food in Coldfoot, lots of activities like snowshoeing, dog sledding and Aurora viewing. You'll need a good camera to get the colors in the Aurora, but it's still spectacular in white! Even colder than I expected, especially with the wind chill. A learning experience like none other.

This was a fun, fascinating and interesting program. Our goal was to see the Aurora, but, we were pleasantly surprised with all of the other activities and lectures.

If you are looking to fulfill your dreams of viewing the aurora borealis, dogsledding, snow shoeing, learning about native Alaskans, appreciating native plants and animals and meeting a diverse group of people, the trip to Fairbanks and Coldfoot is for you. Dress warm! The temps drop to -30F! Enjoy.
