See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. Minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding, and rewarding, programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Great trip! Gib and Randy were excellent guides, very patient and helpful. Late trains were frustrating.

Mary from Albuquerque, NM Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/20/15 - 10/02/15
I enjoyed the trip very much, especially Jasper and Vancouver. The significant train delays of 3.5, 7, and 5 hours were a serious drawback to me, especially in view of the trip's cost and the programs we missed (including seeing Winnipeg for 40 minutes instead of "several hours" and not seeing Lake/Canyon Maligne which was heavily emphasized in RS program materials for Jasper). The program should be advertised openly and honestly with respect to inevitable train delays of 4 to 7 hours in each destination.

Road Scholar's response:
Mary, we are sorry to hear that your program experience was dampened by train delays. While it is true that delays are not uncommon, unfortunately this side of nature is beyond our control. In the case of delays, we will always promise to take a flexible approach, to ensure as much of the program content as possible remains included.

Wonderful trip. The scenery was beautiful. Really enjoyed the cities. The people of Canada are so friendly. The only drawback is that the trains don't run on time so it meant more time sitting in the train station but our wonderful leaders adjusted programs so not much was missed.

I enjoyed the whole experience very much. I loved the train. I really liked getting to know such friendly people on the trip. It made it so much fun. It was also a very educational experience

James from Pinehurst, NC Number of programs attended: 1

I only wish my school History lessons could have been as interesting and informational as this Road Scholar Adventure across Canada. Extremely well organized; well selected lecturers and guides, and a railroad trip that was breathtaking. Kay and Jim, Pinehurst, Nc

Mary from Fairport, NY Number of programs attended: 3

This was a trip of a lifetime. Brian and Mary Rose made it happen. I would recommend it to others.

Susan from San Bernardino, CA Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 05/31/15 - 06/12/15
This trip surpassed our expectations of good food, good company, clean and comfortable accommodations on and off the train, incredible scenery, and a learning experience through outstanding and entertaining lecturers that Road Scholar provides. You must be flexible with your schedule as the train apparently has a separate timetable of its own, but Road Scholar accommodated to all our needs and made sure any time delays did not take away from the enjoyment of the experience. Learning to love Canada was the optimal result of this trip!

Mildred from Albuquerque, NM Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 05/31/15 - 06/12/15
Trip was very scenic, beautiful, and quite an adventure! If you like to focus on nature, the present, and the very interesting people and not worry about deadlines, this trip is for you!

Sally from Renton, WA Number of programs attended: 15
Date attended: 05/31/15 - 06/12/15
THis was a comfortable and delightful trip. Be prepared for a lot of free time. And be prepared for long train waits - they are VERY not on time!! I enjoyed the trip a lot but was not ready for the train waits. It was a delightful experience.

Bill from Los Ranchos, NM Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 10/12/14 - 10/24/14
I have always wanted to take this tour as I really like trains. I hesitated as my wife is not the train fan I am. We took the tour and BOTH enjoyed it immensely. If you like trains or are not sure, this tour is for you!

Ettia from Tulare, CA Number of programs attended: 11
Date attended: 10/12/14 - 10/24/14
I wanted a new way to see parts of Canada that I have not seen before and what better way than by train. If you've never experienced a sleeper car train ride, here's your chance for a fun and comfortable tour. We had quality time in several major cities with good food and friendly people in our group of 22. The lectures and field trips were really enjoyable.

As a first-timer, I had my doubts, but the train trip across Canada was wonderful. The views were spectacular, the guides knowledgeable and our trip directors there when you needed them. The train ride was comfortable, fun and even nicer than I expected.

Peter from Larkspur, CA Number of programs attended: 3

The cross-Canada train trip is a visual delight, with insight into Canada's past & present.

Marsha from Sunnyvale, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/19/14
Road Scholar delivered on their promise of a great program but the train company must not have got the memo...be prepared for long delays at the station, sidelined waits on the track as the freight trains speed by, and luggage logistics typical of a large tour group.

Evelyn from Cherry Hill, NJ Number of programs attended: 22
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/19/14
This is our 23rd Elderhostel/Road Scholar jaunt and one of the best! Marvelous learning experience along with exciting architecture and more in the cities, excellent lectures, interesting people, beautiful scenery and much fun. Train travel is relaxing with time to read and enjoy conversation (or not) The Canadian Rockies a must for those that want to see another kind of beauty. Thanks again RoadScholar as you continue doing what you do so well!

Mary Lois from Birmigham, Al Number of programs attended: 5 I would give this trip a 4. I loved the train ride --food on train was excellent. Enjoyed everyone in our group. Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/19/14

Charlotte from Rohnert Park, CA Number of programs attended: 33
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/19/14
This program is outstanding except for the train ride. Waiting hours for the train to arrive or just to move was very unpleasant. Also my partner and I could not use the upper bunk because of narrow steps on ladder which made us sleep on only the lower bunk.

Haydee from Statesville, NC Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 06/01/14 - 06/13/14
I agree with Melvyn and Sharon but the highlights of these trips are the people we met and the time over the 2 weeks to know many with more than a handshake and a cordial "hello". Meals and the time in the observation cars or strolling streets come back to mind still some 7 weeks later. All 3 of our RS trips were different (a course in photography on the Carolina coast, a week in Florence over New Years, and this train adventure across a continent) but all include the same mixture of nice, interesting and enthusiastic folks. Thanks for the memory. Walter Patterson

Melvyn from Fair Oaks, CA Number of programs attended: 17
Date attended: 06/01/14 - 06/13/14
This trip offers the delights and travails of luxury train travel while enjoying the spectacular sights of Canada and touring three of Canada's grand cities.

Sharon from E Harwich, MA Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 10/04/13 - 10/18/13
The train trip across Canada with RS is a life time opportunity to experience the variety that exists there from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and the train ride itself is lots of fun with fantastic food, don't know how the train chef does it. The time in Jasper National Park was spectacular!
