This program is an excellent introduction to a fascinating subject. I've been visiting Florida for years and never really appreciated the Everglades or knew anything about its history and man's disastrous attempts to "drain the swamp." The suggested reading should be mandatory! The program gave me a whole new perspective on this fascinating and totally unique ecosystem.

Loved this trip with four wonderful kayak paddles - three through the mangrove tunnels. Loved the evening paddle through the mangrove tunnels to a small lake to see the sunset and flocks of birds flying overhead to roost for the night, and then the night paddle back through the mangroves seeing only the trail of small lights from our headlamps and the small glow sticks tied on the back of our kayaks as we wove our way back through the mangrove tunnels. Magical and positively enchanting!!

From open water kayaking among the 10,000 Islands in the Gulf of Mexico - to paddling in fresh water mangroves so low you can reach up to pull yourself forward - to viewing alligators, bottle nose dolphins, turtles, birds and other wildlife everywhere - to a beautiful twilight paddle where you wonder whose glowing eyes you are seeing – this program offers all this, plus very knowledgeable and helpful guides and programs . This is an excellent way to kayak.

SUPER! This entire program was put together in an outstanding fashion. All aspects of Ivey House accommodations were more than adequate - Clean rooms, fine food and courteous staff. As for the program itself, each day built upon itself and blended together to make for an unforgettable Everglades experience. The trip leaders, John and Kristina, seemingly had all the answers and never faltered in the day to day adventures. Perhaps not the best of my several Road Scholar programs, but 'Kayaking the Everglades' surely rates near the top and I would recommend it heartily.

I think this is the best way to experience the Everglades. We learned about birds, habitat, water concerns and the history of the area. The guides,Ivey House and restaurant meals were top-notch.

This was a great!!!! program. We had a terrific guide who knew all the local wildlife and ecology of the area. The birding is wonderful and you will see manatees. A highlight was seeing an 8 foot grown alligator sunning on the bank of the river with a 3 foot baby sunning on its back with a smaller baby sunning on the back of the 3 footer! If you love nature, this is a terrific program. You need basic kayaking skills and some strength - if you're not a really strong kayaker, ask to go in a tandem kayak.

Don't be afraid to try this trip because you're worried the gators will get ya'. All of the Road Scholar participants exercised common sense; we were not in any danger. The twilight paddle was exciting. It's an adventure kayaking in the mangrove tunnels at night and then in the open areas seeing the gators' eyes glow in the beam of our headlamps. It was fun! I really enjoyed the beauty and serenity of kayaking the Everglades. Abundant wildlife and waterbirds. Our guides were topnotch and the Ivey House and Everglades City have a low key atmosphere. Breakfast was adequate and enjoyed sampling the fish and seafood at area eateries. I would recommend this to experienced paddlers.

A great program. Probably best for those with some kayaking experience. Nice accommodations, knowledgable guides, beautiful scenery. The night paddle is magical.
