ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

The pre-trip instructions said to bring a pair of "dress pants". I never found a time when they were needed. Were you assuming that I might go out some night?

N. Adrienne from Nepean, ON Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 04/19/15 - 04/24/15
I have long wanted to visit New Orleans and this program was perfect. The tour guides were knowledgeable and engaging. I learned so much, and was both surprised and enchanted by the city. An easy introduction to the Big Easy.

Leila from Torrance, CA Number of programs attended: 17
Date attended: 04/12/15 - 04/17/15
This was a nice, slow-paced, friendly trip. We ate some odd, New Orleans-home-style food and the sites were interesting to visit. We were dealing with a lot of rain so the fact that this did not ruin the trip is telling.

Link from Tucson, AZ Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 04/12/15 - 04/17/15
For a five day program, I learned a tremendous amount of information about New Orleans. The guides and instructors passed on a wealth of information that I could never get in such a short time on my own. The hotel was very comfortable, and located close to the French Quarter. Our guide was very patient, knowledgable and able to adapt to a wet week in New Orleans. I also enjoyed that so many of my fellow travelers were interesting, curious and eager learners. It was a good mixture of structured and free time.

Jane from Soquel, CA Number of programs attended: 5

Great program for experiencing and learning about New Orleans! Wonderful field trips to different parts of the city, free time for exploring the French Quarter, very talented instructors who make the whole experience meaningful and memorable, and a caring guide who makes sure everyone’s needs are met. The trip does not require a lot of walking, but you do have time to walk and explore if you want to. The hotel room was extremely comfortable. I came away feeling I had learned a lot about New Orleans in a very short time - something I never could have done on my own.

This was our first Road Scholar experience and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The lectures, concerts and meals were all excellent. Sharon (our guide) was delightful and took very good care of all of us. I highly recommend this program.

Colin from Ottawa, ON Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 03/29/15 - 04/03/15
This program, our first with Road Scholar, fully met our expectations. Well organized and delivered lectures provided great context for the other experiences. The jazz performances were great and reminded us that we really did enjoy jazz. Tickets for the jazz club were much appreciated. Ample free time allowed personal exploration of the city but the very early closing times of attractions such as museums and historical houses were inconvenient, though not the fault of Road Scholar - but perhaps some coordination of free time with these opening hours could be considered for the future. Many thanks to the Program Director Sharon, and Lauren, for taking good care of us.

ruth from Indian Harbour Beach, FL Number of programs attended: 1

Richard from Naples, FL Number of programs attended: 3

This program was a delightful way to learn about the history, people and culture of New Orleans. Lectures by well-informed instructors and interesting field trips brought this fascinating city alive. I especially enjoyed learning about the development of jazz, and we were treated to several wonderful performances by very talented musicians. New Orleans is a unique place, and I thoroughly enjoyed the Road Scholar program.

Clara from Cedar Park, TX Number of programs attended: 28
Date attended: 03/29/15 - 04/03/15
We learned a lot about New Orleans. It is an amazing city. Almost a 'melting pot' which brought in different foods and talents. Lots to see and get acqainted with some of the people that made New Orleans the fun city of today.

Cheryl from Spring Valley, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 03/22/15 - 03/27/15
Road Scholar is a great way to trave,l especially if you haven't done much travelling. The lectures that are given each day are both fun and educational and helpful. New Orleans is a fabulous place to go and I highly recommend you make it there someday. All the "Road" employees are educated and informative and so nice and I highly recommend Road Scholar for your travelling needs.

Helen from Ridgeland, MS Number of programs attended: 5

For anyone who wants to know New Orleans beyond the French quarter entertainment and the famous restaurants, the program is a way to learn about the history, architecture, music, art, literature, and culture of New Orlean from very knowledgable sources who have excellent presentation skills in lectures and tours.

Elizabeth from Ayton, ON Number of programs attended: 18
Date attended: 11/09/14 - 11/14/14
In addition to this great program, we met 2 ladies in the elevator who gave us 2 tickets (free) for the James Taylor concert! New Orleans rocks! We'll be back, I hope.

Charlotte from Greensboro, GA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 11/09/14 - 11/14/14
WWhat a wonderful way to see and learn about New Orleans. I had a delightful time and was so grateful for all the info, stories, experiences. This more than met my expectations.

Christopher from Sturtevant, WI Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 11/09/14 - 11/14/14
I personally felt there was a good mix of historical education, entertainment, culture, and cuisine presented. The two of us did skip one lecture on Monday night after dinner to stay in the French Quarter. We went into the French Quarter and Frenchmans Street every evening to enjoy the music and ambiance of the city. We walked everywhere without difficulty or concern for safety, we are in our mid 50's and physically fit so this was not an issue. Overall, it was as I expected and I enjoyed myself.

Ann from Pasadena, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 10/26/14 - 10/31/14
What a delightful, entertaining and educational program! It had just the right mix of field trips, classes and free time to explore New Orleans. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Linda from Vancouver, BC Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 11/09/14 - 11/14/14
Overall this trip involved a lot of sitting - either in classes or on a bus. We did get to visit restaurants we would not otherwise have been able to which allowed us a sample of New Orleans cuisine.

Lenora from Wynnewood, PA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 11/09/14 - 11/14/14
This trip offers a lot of exceptional classes, but there are a lot of classes and less free time to explore New Orleans than you might want.

Kathryne from Westlake Village, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 11/02/14 - 11/07/14
The instructors on this program were truly outstanding! They were funny, interesting, knowledgeable and entertaining!! Our group leader Sharon took good care of us and kept us fully informed about everything. There was a good balance of activities and free time. I was very happy with the hotel and the location. Excellent value for the money! Highly recommend!!!

Beverly from Boca Raton, FL Number of programs attended: 5

Beverly from Boca Raton, 5th program 10/26-10/31 2014 Previous programs were great. New Orleans program was outstanding. Sharon our staff leader and the professional guides gave us the information that made New Orleans an unforgettable experience. And a super value.

Jane from Greenbelt, MD; number of programs attended, 3; date attended 10/26/14-10/31/14 This was one of the best trips I ever took. I learned so much about the history, culture, architecture, and music of New Orleans, and heard some wonderful jazz. I even got to watch a Halloween parade. We had free time to explore the French Quarter.

Alice from Clermont, FL Number of programs attended: 23
Date attended: 10/26/14 - 10/31/14
Great mix of lecture, show and tell and on site exploration! A part of our national history everyone should experience at least once in a lifetime.

Rosa from New York, NY Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 10/12/14 - 10/17/14
A most delightful program! Informative, entertaining, reasonably priced, altogether a wise choice which will give you access to places within the locations you visit that are not accessible if not with the program.

Betty from Fredonia, WI Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 10/26/14 - 10/31/14
This program was the best and most fun of any we have done, and we did like all our other programs. Sharon, the group leader, does a phenomenal job. There are opportunities for free time on your own which is really nice in New Orleans. We absolutely loved it. The Holiday Inn we were in was outstanding and only 6 blocks from the French Quarter. The people in our group were great. The program takes you to places that you would never find or do on your own. The instructors were all fantastic and humorous. You will fall in love with New Orleans!

Nelson from Edmonton, AB Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 10/19/14 - 10/24/14
My first Road Scholar tour was in New Orleans. The city, the program, the organizers, and the attendees all exceeded my expectations. It was a terrific experience. I recommend Road Scholar tours and look forward to attending more.

Paul from Fairfax, VA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 10/19/14 - 10/24/14
Great program, great instructors! Believe the "easy" activity level designation. Much time is spent in class and on the bus. Not a lot of walking around. Later in the week, there are some two- to three-hour free-time periods when you can explore more on your own. NOLA public transportation is quite good and inexpensive.

Kathy from Atlanta, GA Number of programs attended: 8
Date attended: 10/19/14 - 10/24/14
Diet for about a week before you take this fantastic trip to New Orleans. The instructors and field trips were interesting and the food was among the best I've had. Prepare yourself to see New Orleans through a new and revealing lens.

Dennis from Encinitas, CA Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 10/12/14 - 10/17/14
Definitely a great program for 1st time visitors to New Orleans! It is a well rounded program covering a variety of topics. Comfortable lodging and a varied selection of "New Orleans" food all at a very reasonable price make this a highly recommended program.

Denise from Mountlake Terrace, WA Number of programs attended: 1

Great way to get an introduction to New Orleans for those who have never been there. The lectures were very informative. I highly recommend the Sculpture Garden and New Orleans Museum of Art.

Linda from Chula Vista, CA Number of programs attended: 7

If you have never been to New Orleans, this is a great get-acquainted sampler. Lots of local food and wonderful sight-seeing.

Rosemary from Burnsville, MN Number of programs attended: 2

I highly recommend this program. It was extremely well-organized, there was a great variety of topics, and the presenters were so knowledgable and passionate about their areas of expertise. I left this exciting and historic city wanting to adopt New Orleans as my home town!!

Loi Dene from Yuma, AZ Number of programs attended: 8

I have participated in many, many Road Scholar (Elderhostel) programs and I am finding out that the Signature City ones really top the list. Your will not be disappointed by this one. The only thing better than this particular one would be to go during Mardi Gras. Pauline Havens

Carol from Alexandria, VA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/25/14 - 05/30/14
This was my first RS trip but definitely won't be my last. The group members were super nice and even though I went solo, I never had to worry about not being included in conversations and free time activities. The lecturers were incredible and Sharon was an amazing leader. I highly recommend this program.

Patrecia from Newport, OR Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 05/25/14 - 05/30/14
Awesome trip, you must try it. New Orleans if a beautiful city, and people are open and friendly. Too much to see and do in one trip, so I am planning my trip back for Mardi Gra Week!!

Gracia from Las Vegas, NV Number of programs attended: 2

This was our second Road Scholar experience and it surpassed all our expectations. History, cultural understandings, music, food and even the threatened rain held off. Each presenter shared their knowledge in a focused and sometimes humorous manner. Thank you so much. We will be with you again soon.

Jackie from Manasquan, NJ Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 05/18/14 - 05/23/14
This was our 4th trip with Road Scholar and they have all been wonderful. We certainly came away with a deep understanding of New Orleans after listening to informative and entertaining speakers and visiting the highlights of the city on this trip. There was a good balance of scheduled activities and free time and the hotel was convenient to the heart of the old town.

Sara from Reston, VA Number of programs attended: 1

My first Road Scholar trip and my first visit to New Orleans. Everything about it was fabulous. If you are thinking about this trip, my recommendation would be "Go for it".

Carol from Chicago, IL Number of programs attended: 3

Rebecca from Tulsa, OK Number of programs attended: 11

This program is a wonderful way to see and learn about New Orleans. The tour guide & lecturers, the hotel, food, and every field trip, were all outstanding. We would definitely recommend it, with no reservations.

Dana from Savannah, GA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/04/14 - 05/09/14
Road Scholar hosted a fabulous trip for our sorority reunion. We needed a venue to reconnect with each other and RS did the trick. Everyone loved all the sights and lectures and especially the people who spent time with us showing us and telling us about NOLA. Our accommodations were just right and we all ate too much because the food was exquisite. It was especially evident that everyone we had contact with loved their city of New Orleans. We probably would have stayed longer.

Ruth from Columbia, SC Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/04/14 - 05/09/14
I had heard about Elderhostel and had always wanted to participate "someday." This opportunity exceeded my expectations. I was also pleased to be reacquainted with people that I have known, but had grown distant from over time. This was a really nice way to get connected again.

Sandra from Yellow Springs, OH Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/04/14 - 05/09/14
Excellent program with immersion in New Orleans folklore and history. Lots of fun included!

Norman from Round Rock, TX Number of programs attended: 25
Date attended: 04/13/14 - 04/18/14
Very good program with excellent speakers, but activity level should not be described as "Easy" inasmuch as walking distances up to 6-8 blocks were involved. Parking fee at hotel was higher than the fee that Road Scholar showed in its info. Also, too much "free time".

Beverly from Grass Valley, CA Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 04/13/14 - 04/18/14
New Orleans signature city was my seventh program (third signature city program) and was absolutely the best one yet. The lecturers were outstanding!

William from Garden Grove, CA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 04/13/14 - 04/18/14

Interesting program, a bit weird schedule when 3 days were easy, and most of the walking piled up into Thursday. Great city to visit, good hotel in the area not safe at night. We got weekly menu for food to mark off our choices. If you want to read my full report (space here is limited), or have questions, email to faina22@hotmail.com

This was our first trip with Road Scholar and it exceeded our expectations. The presenters were informative and entertaining (and Anne Leonhard was so funny!) We felt that we were given an excellent introduction to the many facets of New Orleans, including the architecture, music, food, literature, and first hand views of the damage from Katrina. Our accommodations were very comfortable and the other participants were interesting and welcoming. I hope that this is the first of many trips for us with Road Scholar.

We had (bid on and) won a 3-day package to New Orleans, and this introduction to the city before we were on our own was just perfect! Very entertaining and knowledgeable presenters, and we learned so much, that by the time our five days was over, we knew where we still wanted to go and how to get there, and it made our 3-day package that much more valuable to us. Everything about this program made us want to do another Road Scholar trip.

Karen from Santa Rosa, CA Number of programs attended: 3

If you've never been to New Orleans you'll love this program. I recommend it highly. The hotel was excellent and so was the food. The French Quarter was within walking distance and easily navigated during the free periods. The lectures were fascinating, no temptation to nod off! I learned so much more than I expected to about its history, music, literature, and of course "The Storm."

This is an outstanding program in an outstanding city. After visiting New Orleans I believe it is one of the most interesting and fun cities I have ever been to. This program gave a great overview of New Orleans and I came away feeling like I was well introduced to the city. I was most impressed with all the exposure to jazz, both with the program and by going to music venues on my own time. I really enjoyed the activities; highlights were the cooking demonstration and meal at New Orleans School of Cooking; the presentation on Mardi Gras Indians at Shaka Zulu's Golden Feather Restaurant; learning about and seeing all the different architectural styles in the city; the wonderful meal at beautiful Dookie Chase restaurant; the New Orleans Museum of Art and outdoor sculpture garden; and seeing by bus the results of Hurricane Katrina and rebuilding efforts in the Lower Ninth Ward. There was much to occupy ourselves during free time; I enjoyed the Natchez paddle wheel ride on the Mississippi as well as roaming the French Quarter, Louis Armstrong Park and the nearby Treme area. Our leader Sharon did a great job of keeping everything organized, keeping us informed and making sure everyone's needs were accommodated. Our instructors were full of information and zeal for their subject. I will note that there is a good amount of class time with this program and perhaps a little more than I would prefer. This is not a reflection on the quality of the program, I like to walk around and explore and therefore would prefer less class time. The hotel is nice with very friendly staff and comfortable, quiet rooms. I am looking forward to my next Road Scholar program, perhaps another one in Louisiana as I was quite impressed with my visit to this state!
