I was skeptical, but this program FAR exceeded my expectations. As a solo traveler on my first RoadScholar trip, I thought I might want to leave early. But from the first day, I was welcomed by all. JT, a BBQ champion extraordinaire, was a phenomenal teacher, sharing his culinary expertise and his hands-on tips and tricks. There was not a single question that he could not answer, usually adding information that we hadn't even thought to ask. Jan, our hostess, was always ready with a warm smile and hugs, arranging a nature walks in the area each morning. Lisa, our cook, brought forth a mountain of food that was both tasty and representative of the area. The BBQ experience was incredible, something that I could never hope to duplicate on my own. The food was phenomenal and more than plentiful. No one in our group ever went hungry!! I was beyond delighted with this experience and am eager to put into practice all that I learned. One particular highlight was the "Storyteller" lecture one evening, who shared historical stories and vignettes. And watching the sweetgrass basketweavers was a truly unique experience. Kudos to all who helped plan this fabulous week.

My husband and I just returned from attending this great program. We found it deliciously informative, surprisingly entertaining, with lots of hands on learning opportunities. J.T., Jan, and the staff are excellent, the setting is perfect for learning, and the cottages are comfortable and inviting. We are looking forward to using our new found BBQ skills with friends and family.

A fine experience with fun people. JT and Jan kept us fully engaged and entertained. There was one night-time problem (heat-pump at our residence went West) but Jan solved it quickly. At 88 years I thought I knew barbecuing, but I really didn't. And did I mention the food we ate? Oh, my. The Allegheny Frontier, where I live, will soon be experiencing BBQ as never before at Mulungushi (the name of my place which in the African language means "Hills of Refuge).

Fabulous all-around! Pitmaster JT Handy is an exceptional instructor, who deftly blended South Carolina and BBQ history, cooking techniques and tips, and opportunities for hands-on experiences. His engaging and humorous style, as well as the delicious meats and sides we helped him cook, made learning easy and fun. Jan is a superb program manager, who ensured everything ran smoothly, and who quickly and efficiently solved any small problems we had. It was a pleasure to meet her, as well as Lisa, who cooked up yummy food, ably assisted by Allen, and by Jack on the oyster roast. Evening events were very good, as was the field trip. Lovely location and accommodations. Did I mention that I really liked this program?

"The instructor, JT Handy, is very knowledgeable and entertaining as well. You gain a vast amount of information and most importantly, learn the proper way of preparing and cooking BBQ chicken, ribs, brisket and pork. Jan, the program director, was attentive to our needs and always helpful." Copied from prior post and states well what our experience was. Liza did a good job with the food which we did not prepare. The field trip and guest speakers were a nice addition to the program. I will be buying a smoker when I get home and my sons have already indicated that they are looking forward to coming over to the house to eat.

Outstanding program! Great instructor, great venue and great food. Indeed, even if you have no interest in learning to barbeque, it's worth it to come just for the food. JT was a knowledgeable, and very funny, instructor who was especially good about answering questions. Jan saw to it the the program ran like a clock. Lisa cooked great meals when we were not eating barbecue. The evening programs were excellent as well. All in all, the best Road Scholar program we ever attended, and we plan to come back for the international barbeque version next year.

We attended this program in 2014 and I wrote a review that somehow never got posted, go figure. We want to get this review on the web site because we both feel very strong about the level of excellence shown for the BBQ class. J. T. is one of the finest seminar leaders we have encountered to date. His style of presentation is both informative as well as entertaining. We have never been especially proficient when using an outdoor grill or smoker. After just 4 days of his tutelage we are now able to consistently provide, from our grill, very tasty food and do so with very little effort. Further the setting for the class is quite relaxing providing for opportunities to talk with the other couples staying in the condo you are assigned. Or if that isn't your desire the rooms provided are quite and private as well. We have never visited a salt marsh and to be honest I personally wasn't even aware such an environment existed so that was also a highlight of our experience. We highly recommend this class especially to anyone who wants to make much use of their outdoor cooking equipment!

I only went to this program because of the date and place and I came away very impressed with this program. JT is and excellent teacher, very knowledgeable, gave much hands-on experienced, but never forced it, gave many facts and history of SC, very generous with his reciepes, and made us very aware of food safety. All the time he was easy going and funny. Jan, the program organized was very friendly and helpful when I was late getting to the program due to a plane delay. Lovely setting.

Wonderful program for those who want to learn about BBQ or love eating it. The only thing that could have been better was the weather. Will have to speak to Mother Nature about that! Thank you JT, Jan, Lisa and all my fellow Road Scholars for a wonderful trip. Now to diet a bit. So much tasty food, who could resist. If you are at all interested in BBQ, I highly recommend this trip.

JT is obviously obsessed with BBQing. He was very able in communicating his passion to us beginners. I really appreciated that he threw in facts about the history of BBQ, chemistry and physiology of meat, physics of fire and heat, psychology (in judging) and even math and economics. He was so entertaining and funny that it was painless learning. He really should have a national TV show! Jan was very welcoming, helped us with our every need and was also much fun to be with. My husband is even considering a second career as a barbecue judge.

We had a great time, met great people, ate great food. Now we are dieting. But JT taught us so much, we have already ordered some equipment and gone shopping so we can cook our own barbecue! I don't think we will do any competitions, but we sure will get invited to cook for lots of freinds. We learned so much, and enjoyed the special programs, the housing, the venue, and just visiting with all the other participants. This is the best Road Scholar we have done. We'll consider doing this one again and bringing friends and family.

We had a great time. JT is a wonderful, well trained, funny, informative, lovely all around instructor. He needs to write a book. Our program leader was a caring, friendly, helpful and all around excellent coordinator. Accomodations were Southern Living gorgeous with everything we needed. We are considering coming back. I am spreading the word about this great program and we are looking at grills.

Dianne from Charlotte, NC Number of programs attended: 1

We were introduced to barbeque from around the world as well as Texas and feel we will profit greatly by this in our future grilling and smoking activities. JT was a great teacher who made learning a lot of fun. The program leader was attentive to our every need and introduced us to low country culture. Accommodations were comfortable and allowed us to have a relaxed week. We consider the week to have been a wonderful experience in learning and in making new friends.

This was an absolutely delightful and informative course. JT is an awesome BBQ teacher -- well-trained and truly a champion Pitmaster. I learned lots and ate VERY well. LifeTide Institute is a tremendous host and provided exceptional additional programming to help us learn more about this part of the country. The facilities were outstanding. I cannot think of thing that could have improved this program. It's worth the effort, even if BBQ is a secondary interest. I highly recommend it, without reservation.

This program was informative, fun and entertaining. Although we had only one "expert" to give us the instruction (and he was great!), our leader brought in wonderful guest presenters who gave us an insight into aspects of the culture of the area. In addition, she organized a field trip to neighboring historical places that I would never have thought to explore on my own.
I loved the whole experience.

Of the three cooking courses that we have taken with Road Scholar, this was by far the best. The instructor, JT Handy, is very knowledgeable and entertaining as well. You gain a vast amount of information and most importantly, learn the proper way of preparing and cooking BBQ chicken, ribs, brisket and pork. Jan, the program director, was attentive to our needs and always helpful. A big added bonus was Vern, a professional cook, who prepared our delicious breakfasts and lunches as well as sides for dinners. Together Jan, JT, and Vern made an awesome team to ensure a memorable experience for everyone. The Palm Key accommodations were very nice and had scenic views of the Low Country. If you are a lover of barbecue and want hands-on experiences, you will definitely have to take this course. But be forewarned! You may gain a few pounds taking this course.

Well worth the time, money and effort- we traveled over 3000 miles each way to attend. Well organized, effective teaching and very good accomodations. (and the food was outstanding!- of course we cooked it so what else would you expect me to say?)
