The leaders know the rivers well and were able change plans to respond to changing weather conditions. I would recommended this trip for anyone comfortable with kayaking and outdoor recreation. Enjoyed the presentations of local culture.

This is a great trip for folks who like a challenging physical activity in a beautiful setting with great accommodations. Our leaders were skilled and caring and the group experience was outstanding.

I had a very nice time in a very interesting part of the world. Days started with a nature hike (optional). Most of the day was kayaking, and we did kayaking in the backwaters of South Carolina that most had never done or seen before. It was fun! The people are great and the program is well run. The accommodations are very, very nice. The food was excellent. What else is there to say? I recommend it!

Excellent adventure, highly recommended. Nice 4-star cabins, 4 scenic kayak trips on variety of water, lots of history, good leaders. The kayaks and paddles are top quality, and you get to try a different kayak every day. We came early and took side trips to Charleston and Okefenokee Swamp.

Pat from Woodville, OH Number of programs attended: 22

What a challenging way to experience the gorgeous water ways of SC. For me, it was far better than a cruise. We were IN nature, the weather, birds, plants, and communities. It was exciting and the rich tiredness at the end of the day made sleeping a breeze. And who doesn't like a picnic with friends. All I can say is Great Fun!

Christina from Brattleboro, VT Number of programs attended: 7

This program was challenging, but we all got caught up in the enthusiasm of our leaders and did more than we thought we could. It was a fascinating introduction to South Carolina low country culture as well.

Be ready to paddle hard, laugh harder, enjoy great Southern cuisine and, even better, warm Southern hospitality. Experience paddling swamps, creeks, rivers, and old rice fields while trying out differing kayaks and paddles. And learn about "The Recent Unpleasantness" (The Civil War), the making of Sweetgrass baskets, and the growing of rice in this richly rewarding and very satisfying adventure!

This was a wonderful trip --- small group size (13 participants), hauntingly beautiful location for the base "camp", great food and accommodations, a terrific pair of knowledgeable guides who are deeply committed to making sure every participant has an enjoyable time and comes to know the low country better, great support from the Life Tides Instititute, a wonderful group of participants, and trips that were demanding of time in the kayaks but not very strenuous --- an unbeatable combination!

As soon as I stepped out of the car after a 10 hour drive from Maryland, I felt warmly welcomed. This is indeed a most magical place and a kayak trip not to be missed: the pretty cottages on the edge of a salt marsh, the committed and intelligent guides, the variety of paddles through beautiful, undeveloped countryside and last, but not least, delicious southern country cooking and good companionship make this trip truly special.Highly recommended. Anne

It was an amazing 5 days. Beautiful part of the country, exceptional guides/leaders, wonderful food, comfortable accommodations with an incredible view. Jody and April are definitely keepers. They were warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. They showed us the low country, taught us about the area and opened their homes and hearts to us. Vernon fed us within an inch of our lives with wonderful southern cooking. It was a very cohesive group with no one who was "high maintenance". The activity level was not too strenuous except for one day when we were on more open water. Otherwise, it was gentle and comfortable paddling. We had wonderful weather which of course helped make it an exceptional trip

Donna from Nyack, NY Number of programs attended: 16

"Kayak More of the Lowcountry" exceeded my expectations. The instructors were knowledgeable, warm, friendly, always available, and made safety first a priority. The lodging was a beautiful house overlooking a salt marsh. The sunrises were just spectacular. The food was awesome and beautifully presented. We paddled in a variety of habitats, each nicer than the next. The paddles were definitely challenging in terms of distance but very manageable. I highly recommend this Road Scholar event. Donna L. The "Kayak More" program is a must for anyone who wants to kayak in gorgeous surroundings, with great leaders, food, and lodging. It is all-day kayaking, returning to great food and fun. Palm Key is like an alternative universe of warm and friendly people (think "Brigadoon"). We've done this trip three times and plan to do it many more times!

Leslie from Winona, MN Number of programs attended: 2

I will second everything that's been previously written. This program is excellent. From the accommodations to the meals to the guides to the paddling destinations, all top of the line. Jody, April and Elizabeth went out of their way to get to know each individual participant and make this a great experience for everyone. Their knowledge of the history, flora and fauna of the area made this much more than just a kayaking trip. If you enjoy kayaking, do this trip!! Leslie Winona, MN 3/23/14 - 3/28/14

If you love to kayak, sleep in a beautiful house and eat fabulous food this is the program for you. April and Jody guided us through lovely and unique water venues, each different and interesting. This is the best kayaking and nature trip I have ever had the pleasure of taking. They made us feel like family.

Joyce from Fairport, NY Number of programs attended: 8

A wonderful kayaking trip. The area is well known to the guides and they are flexible in choosing the appropriate paddle for the weather, tides, wind etc. They are also very adept at making everyone feel welcome and included. The smaller size group allows the group to become better aquainted with one another. Both the accommodations and food were top notch.

Kathy from Madison, WI Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 03/23/14 - 03/28/14
The guides are most accommodating and consider weather and tidal variances each day to create a pleasant outing. They are extremely knowledgeable about the area and strive to vary the experiences to present a most educational program. Accommodations and meals were top-notch!

Sandra from New York, NY Number of programs attended: 14
Date attended: 03/23/14 - 03/28/14
This is a wonderful trip for active folks who enjoy kayaking in a variety of environments from salt water marshes to tidal rivers to evocative swamps. Great leaders who will give you a solid introduction to the low country, its birdlife and natural history, and its history and traditions. It's such a great experience that I've done this program four times! Sandy Roche

This is one of my all-time favorite Road Scholar trips. Super accommodations, absolutely wonderful food including a traditional low-country boil and oyster roast. Very comfortable, welcoming staff and the guides (April and Jody) are tops; a joy to paddle with. If you're a kayaker, this one's for you!

In good weather, decent river guides look good. In bad weather, however, superb river guides shine. Jody and April more than met the challenge of the 40° Nor’easter that dominated our paddling, plus they educated us on the flora, fauna, geology and history of the Lowcountry. They brought enough extra clothes for a small army, introduced us to local artists, sang and played for us. Jan, the trip organizer, likewise excelled in enthusiasm and helpfulness. Vernon, our chef, made our meals to perfection and was, moreover, as interesting and warm-hearted as his creations. I loved “Kayaking the Low Country!” Wherever they were – Jody, April, Jan and Vernon – they brought the sun. Sandra Lambert, Providence, RI
