ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding, and rewarding, programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

We had a great time! The parades were stunning, the restaurants were top-notch and the Road Scholar seats put us front and centre (yup - from one of the Canadians, who spell it "re"). The city tour, the live music at brunch, the special speakers were typical high-quality Road Scholar icing on the cake. I have wanted to go to Mardi Gras since I was five years old; sometimes good things take a while.

Overall, i had a wonderful and exciting time with ROAD SCHOLAR!!! This was a very first trip with RS. It was most enjoyable meeting so many wonderful people and visiting New Orleans for Mardi Gras was a special adventure and uplifting time which I will always treasure for a lifetime. If you want to see 10 parades in 3 days this is the place to come. If you want to collect 100 pounds of beads this is the place to come. Annette, Joyce, and Barbara did a wonderful job of coordinating the 90 people on this RS adventure. When eating out we were divided into groups of 45 which was much more manageable. Restaurant food was wonderful. It should be noted that if you are on a low sodium diet this is not the place for you. Even the chicken salad the last night was loaded with salt. The hotel offered a 2nd rate continental breakfast. The quality of rolls we were served were 2nd rate to the ones served in their restaurant downstairs. They are not able to accommodate 90 for a buffet. Grilled chicken turned into fatty battered chicken by the end. Ran out of crab cakes. Wait staff very slow in clearing dishes and refilling water glasses. Their vegetarian dish was mush. Even with the bad food at the hotel I would still return and experience the carnival atmosphere.

We thoroughly enjoyed this well planned and run program by three outstanding and helpful leaders. The hotel was a perfect place to be for the carnival parades; the food was outstanding with a jazz band! The tours and lectures were an added benefit for choosing Road Scholar to do Mardi Gras week. We so appreciated this experience that we signed up for another Mardi Gras program in New Orleans in September. We want to keep the good times rocking and rolling!!

This program provided a wonderful environment to experience the delightful chaos of New Orleans during Mardi Gras. The hotel was comfortable and perfectly located for viewing the parades. The tours and lectures were both entertaining and educational. Many thanks to Barbara, Joyce and Annette for making it such an outstanding experience.

This is a fun and informative program. Great balance between background on Mardi Gras and time to experience the parades and appreciate the imbedded cultures of New Orleans.

Great program. Excellent location for hotel and viewing the parade. Thanks to RS for the special seating only for RS group. We did not have to wait ALL day for a good seat. Tour leaders were excellent. The only problem was the weather - cold. However, RS cannot pick the dates. Recommend it to everyone. Even Bourbon Street if you are willing.

I would be quick to recommend any of the New Orleans Road Scholar offerings. Barbara, Joyce and Annette (along with Annette's son and daughter-in-law) provided exquisite guidance along the way on the Mardi Gras tour. And the people of New Orleans are warm and wonderful! A Road Scholar offering NOT to be missed!

Had always wanted to experience Mardi Gras but was uncertain about doing it by myself. I also wanted to revisit New Orleans since I had had such a great time there in the 90's. This program solved both problems in a really delightful way. A great way to see Mardi Gras! And a chance to see the city celebrate.

This was my first introduction to Road Scholar and the bar has been set high. Program leaders, Barbara and Annette, did a great job of coordinating things and making sure we all had the information we needed. This trip was on my wife’s “bucket list” and typically I like to venture out on my own and not be part of a group. However, had I done that, I would have missed out on a great place to view the parades from and some wonderful food experiences. I can’t believe how crowded the streets were and so I totally appreciated our private stands with a premier vantage point. The standard hotel complimentary breakfast was low-end, but for the most part all other meals, in private rooms, were wonderful and plentiful – and some came with live music. I heard the hotel had some issues getting guests situated this year, but our check-in experience was great, even come with an unasked for upgrade. The whole experience is centered on Mardi Gras itself – the tradition and parades. To learn about the extensive history of New Orleans has got to be a trip in itself. I highly recommend this trip and even extending it a day or two on your own after to experience the city as it exhales from the party atmosphere. Loved it! No complaints.

Great location for viewing Mardi Gras. Private viewing bleachers were great. However, the breakfasts were pathetic and unhealthy, unless you think pastry is a health food. There was fruit which consisted of apples and oranges. Bananas came and went. Need more meals outside of hotel. Hotel food was typical Holiday Inn hotel food. Learned a lot about Mardi Gras but you will not come away with an extensive knowledge of New Orleans. Both program directors invited their family members in our viewing stands. Sorry but we paid for those private viewing stands and I don't think it is appropriate for them to let their family or friends use them. There is nothing going on the last day so there is no reason to book a late departure. If you just plan on going home, book an early flight.

My Mardi Gras trip exceeded my expectations. Having the reserved seating right on the parade route was perfect. The hotel was right there if anyone wanted to come and go as they pleased. The food at the restaurants was great and the educational sessions were perfect for the event. I highly recommend this trip. It is the only way to experience Mardi Gras in a safe, comfortable environment.

You can't go wrong on the program organized for participating in Mardi Gras and understanding its history and significance for New Orleans. The program leaders, Barbara McCurdy and Annette Incardonna, are simply outstanding. They have worked out a 100% formula for a large group to navigate and thoroughly enjoy New Orleans. I had attending Mardi Gras on my bucket list but hesitated because I just didn't want to be involved with the drinking and rowdiness of Bourbon street. I have now learned how minimal that is as a part of the Mardi Gras experience. This is truly a thrilling experience but there is much to understand as well, both of which were fully realized. I plan on attending again because there is even more to do and see and understand than even the best organized 5 days can provide. I will probably arrive a week earlier to participate in even more of the parades and neighborhood events that take place. I would never have known how much more there is to experience than just "Fat Tuesday," aka Mardi Gras, if I hadn't participated in this program. I give this five stars and a full 'thumbs up.'
