See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This was a delightful trip to Puerto Rico. It was active, informative, and fun and the tropical weather was a bonus. Our leader, Alberto Melendez, did a great job with all the details.

Elizabeth from Mandeville, LA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 04/20/14 - 04/27/14
A few of us ventured into a coffee shop for a light lunch in old San Juan on our last day of the trip. Here we could write a poem if it struck us to do so. Thinking about it on my way home, I put some words together to sum up the trip. So here goes:

We came to Puerto Rico for adventure, fun and sun;
We came to Puerto Rico for iguanas, parrots and coqui;
We are leaving Puerto Rico with memories, pictures, and souvenirs;
We are leaving Puerto Rico with new friends, knowledge and a desire to return again.

We came to Puerto Rico to snorkel, hike and kayak;
We came to Puerto Rico to taste plantains, coffee and Don Q;
We are leaving Puerto Rico with sunburned backs, tired legs and stronger arms;
We are leaving Puerto Rico with new tastes, new highs and a desire to return again.

Thanks Alberto M. You were a joy.

A wonderful trip! Alberto's Melendez' enthusiasm for nature and the island were contagious. He was organized and informative with a delightful sense of humor. I also liked the emphasis on fresh and local foods. The active parts of the trip include mostly hiking with one half day of snorkeling and one half day of kayaking. There is also an afternoon of beach time and pools are readily available at the hotels. The Villa Parguera is especially pleasant with a relaxing atmosphere and lovely view.

Glenn from North Wales, PA Number of programs attended: 2

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent trip to Puerto Rico. All of the activities and arrangements were well done. Our guide, Alberto Melendez, was great. We loved the hiking and water activities. Kathy and Glenn Carlson

This was a great program, perfect for those who want an active and varied program mostly outdoors. We learned a lot about Puerto Rico, we enjoyed the hiking and snorkeling, we ate good food. The beach was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Alberto, the leader, was outstanding in every way: he was enthusiastic and personally engaging, organized, attentive to all participants, eager to transmit his love for Puerto Rico. Be prepared to be on the go!

Esther from Annapolis, MD Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 02/16/14 - 02/23/14
This program was active and fun. The leader did an excellent job. The places we stayed were great and the food very good. What an excellent way to get away from a cold, snowy winter. I recommend it highly. We happened to have a most congenial group.

Georgia from Huntington, NY Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 01/19/14 - 01/26/14
This was a wonderful trip! We sampled such beautiful features of this tropical island- white beaches, cliffs and mountains and the charm and culture of Old San Juan. Our guide Alberto was so enthusiastic and very knowledgeable- and his great sense of humor made the group experience even more delightful. I highly recommend this active and interesting program!

Mary from Williamsburg, VA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 01/19/14 - 01/26/14
If you're looking for beautiful settings, lots of activities that will give you a good workout...with a really fun guide who will stay with you all the way...then this is the adventure for you...enjoy!

Renana from West Hartford, CT Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 01/19/14 - 01/26/14
Although I enjoyed much of the trip, I think there has to be more snorkling if you are going to advertise it as a "snorkling,hiking and kayaking trip". The group of people was wonderful as was our group leader, Alberto Melendez

Bill from Chesapeake, VA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 01/19/14 - 01/26/14
This program is an excellent opportunity to learn about the history, culture, food and people of Puerto Rico while immersing oneself in the natural beauty of its reefs, mangrove swamps, dry and rain forests, and unusual bioluminescent bay ecology. The group leader of this program, Alberto Melendez, is exceptional and will make all attendees glad they chose this Road Scholars offering.

Diane from Ellicott City, MD Number of programs attended: 14
Date attended: 01/19/14 - 01/26/14
Couldn't have asked for a better trip. Puerto Rico is a beautiful island with many interesting fun things to do--snorkeling, kayaking, hiking in rain forests, etc. Our group leader, Alberto, was truly outstanding--he worked hard to make sure we had a great time--and we did!

Roxanne from Okemos, MI Number of programs attended: 13
Date attended: 01/19/14 - 01/26/14
This program was excellent. Just the right amount of history, background and culture along with the physical activities made it a perfect winter getaway. Wished I could have stayed and played longer!
Alberto is so positive, fun and energetic. He made the program special.

Nancy from Lake City, FL Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 11/10/13 - 11/17/13
The trip to Puerto Rico was delightful. The kayaking was somewhat challenging, but we all rose to the challenge. The visibility for snorkeling was cloudy, but the guide was so good that we saw and photographed lots of reef critters. The hikes gave us lots of time to explore several very different types of habitats, and the instructors gave running commentary on the plants, animals and landscape. The best part of the program was working with Alberto Melendez and Alicia Torregrosa. They were ideal guides.

Joan from Milwaukee, WI Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 11/10/13 - 11/17/13
Great Trip even better than trip description in catalog! Leaders are super qualified and fun. If you love being outdoors and active, this is the trip for you.

Terry from Asheville, NC Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 02/24/13 - 03/03/13
I enjoyed the Hike, Kayak, and Snorkel trip in Puerto Rico. The leader, Alberto Melendez was excellent. The accommodations, transportation, and food were all good. The activities were less physically challenging than I expected but were fun, especially snorkeling and the trip to bio bay. Some of the instructors were difficult to understand. Overall, it was a very good trip.

Charles from Newark, DE Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 01/20/13 - 01/27/13
Our first Road Scholar trip (our first tour group trip of any kind, actually), it was great. We started in San Juan, traveled to the southwest corner of the island where we snorkeled, kayaked, swam, and hiked, then returned to San Juan where we hiked the rain forest and walked old San Juan. The meals were interesting and tasty (except breakfasts--kind of boring). Everyone liked Alberto, our tour guide. Visited both Atlantic and Caribbean coasts. Best of all it was freezing at home and 85 in Puerto Rico.

Shirley from Irvine, CA Number of programs attended: 37
Date attended: 01/20/13 - 01/27/13
The program to Puerto Rico was very enjoyable. It is a beautiful island

Stephen from Cleveland, OH Number of programs attended: 6

Overall, a lovely relatively vigorous experience that stimulated an appreciation of the culture of PR while sharing some of its diverse beauty
