EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

A wonderful program which gave me a thorough and very different perspective on the Grand Canyon. The physical demands of the trip are not understated, but if one does the necessary physical preparation, you will be amply and memorably rewarded.

I am 61 and a day hiker. This was the most physically challenging and the most exhilarating trip I have ever taken! I am thankful for every minute I spent training for it over the past 10 months. Every detail was well planned and executed. Good food, interesting, fun people, knowledgeable, supportive guides, and spectacular surroundings. No better way to experience the canyon!

At 67 and just a day-hiker, to have met this challenge was deeply satisfying. We had a great group and exceptional leadership - an awesome experience!

This program exceeded my expectations greatly. I highly recommend this program to anyone that is willing to train in advance and wants an absolue mountain top (or canyon floor)experience that will be treasured for the rest of their life. The staff, Jeff and Jenn from NAU,were leaders, friends, educators and just good people to be with for six days. The small group (11) provided the opportunity for good interaction with the staff and other members of the group. Bottom line, I would do this hike again in a heart beat !!!!

Marveling at the Grand Canyon's awesome beauty from the rim is an unforgettable experience, but to be inside the canyon looking up is truly sublime. A trip like this would be almost impossible to organize and complete on one's own. My husband and I are most grateful to NAU for obtaining the necessary, sequential permits and for providing great staff like Jeff and Jen to lead, support, educate and inspire us. Our hike went north to south, so the first day out down a 4,000 foot elevation drop to Cottonwood was grueling, but Jeff had advised us 6 weeks ahead of time to climb up and down a LOT of stairs carrying weight, which we did. The training beforehand (and good knee braces) made the difference! The rest of the hike was, well, like taking a walk in a magical park. If you can physically handle the challenge, it's an opportunity not to be missed.

The rim to rim Grand Canyon hike was an incredible experience. I would recommend it to anyone, I'm sorry it took me until I was 64 years old to do it! Doug

The adventure was all that we could of hoped for. My wife and I throughly enjoy the people, beauty, and the challenge. The guides were attentive, knowledgeable, and encouraging. We paced ourselves well by stopping regularly for a minute or two allowing us to drink in the canyon's ever changing vistas. The climb out the north rim was a heart pounder at 8000+ feet. If you have the physical conditioning and the desire, it will be one more thing checked off of the bucket list.
