Sierra is a wonderful instructor! She explains concepts, demonstrates them and then has us practice. I am a two-year watercolorist, so still a beginner, and I learned many useful concepts I had not heard before -- about value, the importance of learning about your paints, elements of a good watercolor, focus, etc. I learned so much! It was great! And the other participants were interesting and delightful! However, I found the accommodations to be awful. The Super Eight smelled bad and was dirty. There was no decent place to sit and do e-mails or chat with another student or just relax. I felt trapped in my room. Three nights out of five I had difficulty sleeping due to the considerable noise emanating from the Wine Bar next door. I was one click away from moving to one of the three reasonable-looking accommodations within a five-minute walk of the Super Eight. At the last minute, my roommate and I decided to grin and bear it, and stayed put. The food was passable. Some meals were great (the eggplant!) but the fish dishes were overcooked and dry. And we were there in early September -- the heart of the bountiful time -- I kept wondering where were the peaches, pears, nectarines, beets, lettuces, leafy greens and other bounties of the season. The fruit was pineapple and melon! We would negotiate to trade the occasional berry with each other! This was my first Road Scholar trip and I just today received my new catalog. I am hesitant to sign up for another trip, though I would hire Sierra to work with me in the blink of an eye!

Sedona is such a beautiful place and I had wanted to get back after a one day visit years ago. Came a day early to get in some hiking before program started. Super 8 was very accomodating in getting me a room that I could stay in and not have to change when group registered next day. The location of motel is out of the tourist area which is nice, but if no car there are some limited places you can walk to get convenience/food items or eat out on free nite. However the motel is clean and rooms have a frig (though mine was broken and it took couple days to get fixed). Motel staff very helpful. The restaurant next door provided good meals, including gluten free. But you have to be very careful questioning the staff giving you info as they are not always well informed about what gf is (ie didn't know reg soy sauce not ok, thought quinoa not ok). The program itself was a wonderful introduction for me into art experience. I went not having painted or even drawn. Most of class was much more experienced though there were a couple other beginners. I think it went a bit fast for me, but I kept reminding myself I was there to see if I liked watercolor and would be interested in taking more classes as I get into retirement. Given that, I was able to relax, enjoy the experience, and learn something new. I was happy with interaction with instructor, and more experienced classmates also were helpful. I left feeling my work product for the few days was good enough for a beginner, and I plan on taking more classes. The group interaction was also very nice. I would highly recommend this program.

Just came back from Sedona on my first Road Scholar trip. Most important part of the trip was the watercolor instruction. Art teacher Sierra McKenna was the best instructor I have studied with! Not to mention an exceptional artist. That alone was worth every dollar we spent! Will definitely book with Road Scholar again.

This was my second Road Scholar trip and I was pleased that the quality of instruction, lodging, meals, and evening programs was consistently god. Sierra Mc Kenna provided excellent instruction for all skill levels. Her organization was excellent for both the specific techniques of water color and composition, design and color theory in general for all media.

I really enjoyed the classes with Sierra McKenna in Sedona. There couldn't be a more inspirational setting. She packed in demonstrations and lectures to make the most of our/her time. At times it felt like too much, but we have lots of time at home to integrate the information. Sierra's a perfectionist, but she was kind to remind us that practice is the key. I was not disappointed.

Had a wonderful time at Sedona Watercolor Workshop. Not picking up a brush in many years, it didn't take long to relearn from our excellent instructor Sierra McKenna. She encouraged us and always had positive feedback for us. The group of ladies taking the workshop were a great and enthusiastic bunch. Lots of laughter while learning.

If you are a serious watercolor student, you will not find a better instructor than Sierra McKenna. She is organized, knowledgeable, patient, thorough, and helpful. Painting with her for a week was a delightful experience.

Sedona Watercolor workshop, fantastic, views everywhere inspired you to paint. Instructor very experienced and able to explain techniques well, all levels of students in class and all able to paint at their level. Everyone learned something new. Field trips to paint were fun and good outdoor practice. Food great. Other students great too. Nancy Huck Spokane WA

The watercolor class in Sedona, Arizona is outstanding and I highly recommend it to artists of all levels. The instructor, Sierra McKenna, is not only a master at watercolor, but she is a master teacher too! The scenery, accommodations, meals, art studio, and field trips were all perfect! Thank you Road Scholar for making this experience one I will definitely do again and again!
