ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderately Challenging
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

My wife, Linda, and I enjoyed the four days of hiking with our knowledgeable, personable and humorous guide, Joanna, and our very friendly "sweeper", Cynthia. The varied terrain and numerous geological formations we saw were remarkable in their beauty and grandeur. The hike in Water Holes, a slot canyon, will always be a special memory.

This was a great opportunity to get into the desert backcountry with very knowledgeable local guides who led us into slot canyons, on top of mesas, and to places we would have never found on our own. A wonderful and memorable experience.

I highly recommend this program for anyone who enjoys hiking through spectacular scenery! The guides are wonderful in every way (smart, funny, capable) and you will never forget the beauty that will surround you.

I echo all the reviews posted by other participants. Beautiful rock formations, fun slot canyons, energetic hiking, interesting evening programs, excellent accommodations (perhaps the best I have had on a RS program), delicious breakfast, a relaxing pool and hot tub, Joanna, the amazing leader and program coordinator -- this program has it all! And as with all RS programs, the best part is getting to know the other participants who come for all parts of the country. I would put this program on the higher end of "Moderately challenging". Be sure to read the itinerary that accurately describes the program's hikes. Tours of Antelope Canyon and the Glen Canyon Dam are both worthwhile but not included in the program, so you might try to schedule these on a day before or after the program. We have posted pictures at https://lakepowellroadscholar.shutterfly.com/. Happy hiking!

This program combines four days of vigorous hiking with evening programs about geology, local fauna/history, and Western music. Come prepared to hike 5-7 miles a day over sandy washes, through slot canyons, and down some steep slopes with Joanna Joseph, who is a fantastic leader. I hope to return to beautiful Arizona for more hikes!

If you are looking for great hikes, fantastic scenery, fun and entertaining leaders, this is the hike for you. I selected this hike because of recommendations I had received.

What fun this program was! Joanna led us to hidden treasures to explore each day: to high arches with expansive views and to slender slot canyons with more intimate connections to nature (with occasional opportunities to be a contortionist). Along the way she not only educated us about botany and geology but entertained with poems and song pertinent to our unique experiences in this lovely land. We were astounded at the bounty of nature in this remote area that can be enjoyed only by getting out into the nooks and crannies. Talented musically and in group dynamics, Joanna can lead you, too, in these remarkable adventures. Give it a try if you are a moderate hiker and adventurous soul. You will not regret it.

Terrific experience! Hiking was not too strenuous, but interesting as it sometimes required some rock scrambling. Beautiful country!
