This was one of the most enjoyable trips I have made with Road Scholar. Our guides were fun, interesting, and knew the areas that were covered. Our group was small and very congenial.

The gardens and historical manor houses of the Lake District were simply wonderful, and I learned so much about new ideas and techniques for gardening. Even if I was not already an enthusiastic gardener, there were so many things to learn about and scenery to experience that I would have loved this trip anyway!

Great mix of gardens and historical/cultural sites. The leader was so willing to chat about the gardens and historical sites, as well as the wildlife, farm animals, farm crops, wild flowers, trees, birds, ecology, town and village life, etc.

Wonderful trip! It had a great blend of gardens (incredible variety), houses, ruins, towns, etc. All of our guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and Peter, our tour guide, was excellent. Lindeth Howe was a delightful hotel, and the Crown Hotel in Harrogate was a fun old hotel right in the heart of the city. Great trip, and great people.

It was fun to be with a group of thirteen, and an attentive tour guide. The gardens were fabulous, lunches and dinners were beautifully planned, the pace was just right for some people with achy joints. I want to see Lowther Hall in 2 years and see its progress.

We chose this program for several reasons: the beautiful part of England it covered, the focus on gardens (but with other very interesting stops also), the small group format and the long stays in just two locations. We were definitely not disappointed. What a gorgeous place to be with a congenial small group of fellow travelers! The competence and organizational skills of Mountain Goat were apparent even though this was a new program. Everywhere we went, local guides were ready to provide informative and enthusiastic commentary. Restaurants had our tables all prepared when we arrived, food was very tasty and there were always several choices on the menus. Group leader Peter was supportive of everyone, a great story teller, full of energy and an amazing driver. We were particularly impressed with the graciousness of our hosts at Windy Hall who provided tea, lunch and a tour of their expansive garden which is clearly a labor of love. We highly recommend this program to others.

You know the trip was wonderful if you would happily take the same one again. The food and accommodations were excellent, the schedule was full but not exhausting, the balance of rocks, ruins, and roses superb. Above all, many of us were impressed by the consistently gracious warmth of every person we encountered from hotel staff to guide leaders to local residents. Although the guide at each garden or historic site must give the same talk repeatedly to their many visitors, they each showed an affectionate passion for their particular area of expertise. We were treated to a fascinating "back story" the evening before going to Lowther Castle, and had a private tour of Levens Hall so we could really appreciate the history of that stunning topiary garden. I had high hopes for the trip, and they were surpassed. I highly recommend it, and am very glad I signed up for the 'trial run' of this fine program.

This is a unique opportunity to visit unusual gardens, from the vast and palatial to the tiny and intimate, in two of the most inviting regions of of England -- the Lake District and Yorkshire. The small group tour enables close conversations with master gardeners from the region and other expert gardeners from the US who are attracted to this program. The rambles around Yorkshire gave us landscapes that were more open and pastoral than the densely wooded Lake District. I learned a lot, shared a lot, and enjoyed every minute. Lindeth Howe Country Hotel is elegant and charming. The food is great and the history impressive. It was the house that Beatrix Potter bought for her mother to live in in the last years of her life. We got a look at Lancaster Castle, a historically important site which I have never ever seen on any other tour company's schedule. We visited Wordsworth's home, Rydal Mount, and then the Bronte Parsonage on our way back to Manchester. Mountain Goat is the primo tour company in the Lake District and Yorkshire. Their guides are well organized, friendly, patient and fun to be around. Thanks,Peter! When can I sign up for next year?

I've just returned from this program and want to encourage others to consider it. This new program is being offered by Mountain Goat - a small company in the lake district that does a terrific job. We saw a wonderful variety of beautiful gardens, had some informative talks by experts, were treated to a few other interesting stops along the way, and had a top-notch guide who was sensitive to the small group's needs. The first week was spent at the lovely Lindeth Howe, a country house hotel near Lake Windermere. The second hotel was centrally located in Harrogate, an elegant spa town that was great for walks in Valley Gardens park and past the many beautiful Victorian buildings and enticing shops that were nearby.
