Program #8718RJ
12 Days | 11 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Highly recommend this program for anyone who wants to see and learn about this beautiful part of the country--whether you've already been there or not. Much to learn and appreciate its history and geology

One of my favorite RS programs in the past 12 years. Very well staffed. Learned a lot in geology, native / Spanish/Mormon cultures, botany/biology. The hikes, raft trip on the Colorado, and sandstone 'eye candy' were all highlights. Trip ended at Vegas airport and we stayed over to see shows like Donny & Marie Osmond on our own.

This was a great trip, one we planned to do for some time. It exceeded our expectations. The scenery was spectacular. We really enjoyed taking short hikes in the parks we visited. The trip was well organized and the leaders were experienced and knowledgable. The meals were very good and the hotels were comfortable. We saw and learned so much more than we would have if we had taken this trip on our own.

Beautiful, dry desert with dramatic sticky-ups (an official, technical term :) ), cliffs and gorges, enhanced by Road Scholar's very knowledgeable guides and lecturers. A 4-wheel truck-pulled open van on rarely used tracks/trails in Monument Valley, other-worldliness of Bryce, Zion's maze of canyons and indescribable Grand Canyon and views, visits to great museums and National Monuments, quiet river rafting below the Glen Canyon Dam just above the official start of Grand Canyon make for lasting wonderment and memories.

Start with seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time and floating down the Colorado River; add a memorable ride through Monument and Mystery Valleys with learning what a hoodoo is at Bryce Canyon; then marvel at the magnificence of Zion National Park. Top this with excellent group leaders and you have a terrific program!

Everyone in the group seemed to enjoy the trip. It was a good choice for me, coming from the southeast. I had never seen such majestic structures. The geology lessons were fantastic.

We made a really good choice in selecting this program. Loved the hikes off the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, along the rim of the Hoodoo filled amphitheater at Sunrise point at Bryce, and up the river into the narrows of Zion Canyon. The boat ride on the Colorado river below the Glenn Canyon dam was spectacular. We rode the bus down to the launch point through tunnels built to accommodate construction of the dam. Looking up at the canyon walls while drifting downriver was a blast. Never in my life have I met someone who has more knowledge on such a wide array of topics as Jeff Strang, the group leader. He knew every detail on every plant, animal, and geologic formation, as well as related stories regarding local history and folk lore of the area. He is fascinating to listen to. As a guide he really added depth and knowledge to the experience of seeing the sites. Dave Hall, the co-leader, was one of the nicest and friendliest guys - having him along on the hikes and as a van driver was a blast. And does he ever know his geology - wow! Not a single day of rain, weather was great in the Southwest. Food and accommodations were excellent, particularly at the Majestic View Lodge just outside the park boundary at Zion - spectacular views,a nice pool area, and a small balcony from our room to relax and soak it all in. Most hikes were short with modest elevation change so everyone could enjoy them. But there was also opportunity for those who wanted longer hikes to have more challenge and explore a bit on their own.

The Absolute Southwest – A Canyon lands Adventure tour was spectacular! Each site we visited was awe-inspiring and we were pleased with all of them. The scenery was beautiful and we learned much about the geology of the areas and how they were formed and connected. The explanations were understandable and interesting, thanks to Jeff Strang. We enjoyed our other tour companions, our accommodations and meals also. This was our second Road Scholar tour, and our first with the Northern Arizona University companion program. We plan to book another tour with their organization to see more of the southwest.

The Absolute Southwest: Canyonlands Adventure #8718 was a terrific value for the money. Knowledgable guides made the tor a true educational experience. Care was taken to plan for a group with diverse walking capabilities and I never felt left behind. As well, and excellent wireless communication system kept everyone within range of commentary during field trips.

the experience exceeded my expectations -- the sites picked and the amount of time spent at each site was well chosen and the pacing of our days in travel and physical activity was excellent. I especially appreciated the up close and personal contact with monument valley and grand canyon -- more time spent at a particular place, made it more meaningful. would have liked more time at Bryce national park but as a whole, the trip was wonderful.

The Absolute Southwest Adventure was one of the most interesting, educational, and enjoyable trips I have ever taken. It was my first Road Scholar trip. The spectacular countryside that we had the pleasure of seeing, got more beautiful with each passing day. The organizational skills, the knowledge, and the energy of our instructors, especially Jeff Strang, were impressive. This is a trip that I would highly recommend. We were having such a good time, that we booked our second Road Scholar trip while still on the first one!

Put this one on your bucket list! It's not to be missed. Seeing such grand sites stirs your senses and invites you to learn more about these fascinating areas. Each day is filled with new adventures like walking below the rim in the Grand Canyon, riding in the back of a 4-wheel drive truck to see the sky through the arches in Monument Valley and finding star-shaped crinoid fossils in the hillside. A great trip indeed!

The "Absolute Southwest - a Canyon lands Adventure" was a fantastic sightseeing and learning trip. A great value for our money. We had been considering visiting these places on our own but wisely decided to travel with Road Scholar instead. We saw, did and learned so much more than we ever would have by ourselves. Thank you, Road Scholar!

If you want to not just see, but to experience Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Glen Canyon, Bryce and Zion in a special way, then do not miss this wonderful trip! The skilled, knowledgeable leaders present information about geology and our human interaction with our land in ways that truly facilitate learning, while making it fun! The food, accommodations, and evening events are delightful. You will find pleasure in all parts of this program.

At every bend in the road, the vistas were magnificent! We experienced the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Bruce Canyon, and Zion National Parks up close and personal. Everyone should appreciate the beauty of our country! All three of our instructors delivered information with ease and expertise. We made contacts with fellow participants which will continue long after the trip is over!

This was a wonderful program, and I would heartily recommend it. The instructors were excellent; accommodations and meals delightful, and I learned more than I ever thought this old brain could absorb about geology, history, and the wonders of the beautiful canyonlands of the Southwest. I had never been to the Grand Canyon before, and this was a "bucket list" experience for me. It proved to exceed my expectations in every regard. Don't miss it!
