20 Days | 19 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy

ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

We had a wonderful experience both on the cruise and during our days on the islands. Art Reed was a wonderful group leader and gave us excellent lectures on all aspects of Hawaii during our days at sea. The local guides were also experts in their areas. We were pleased with the ship experience on the Veendam - the food, service and facilities were very good, and the stateroom was most comfortable. This was a fine introduction to Hawaii and we would love to return to see much more

The lectures by expert Art Reed were fascinating and exceptionally well presented. He covered both society and the natural world. Our shore trips were also interesting. I feel I really understand the Polynesian Pacific much better.than I did before. It was well worthwhile, the food was great, so was the company...my only tip, if you don't like to gamble, take in spa treatments, etc take lots to read - the ship itself is a typical cruise experience with variable standards of entertainment and a "summer camp" atmosphere at times. Also, be warned - it was surprisingly chilly both on the ship and in the shore excursion busses - take sweaters.

Road Scholar was encouraged by family as our parents had started with elderhostel, then road scholar. My sister and I carried on the tradition as we became "of age" and can't wait for another trip! Our parents are thrilled that we took the trip!

Cruising across the Pacific gave me a better appreciate of those who crossed the vast oceans to get to our shores before sailing was so comfortable. And too, visiting Hawaii was like a dream come true.

My wife and I both enjoy this Hawaii trip. Though the travel time on board ship was long. The adventure time, the five days around the islands, was worth it. Seeing the volcano crater was very impressive. It was too bad the we could not go around the road as the hazardous gases were spewing up out of the center and flooding the road. The most impressive part of this trip was the Pearl Harbor Memorial for me being ex-Navy. You just cannot help but being extremely impressed and emotional by looking at all of the names of the ships and the people who were buried under the waves along with them. I was disappointed that I could not get aboard the submarine, as it required a ticket which we could not get because the tenders going over to the memorial were not running due to high wind. I would've expected the submarine tour to be an alternative choice by Rhodes Scholar, but that did not happen. The coffee plantation we visited was very impressive, and I did not waste any time in shipping home 5 pounds of their best coffee beans. This came as a great surprise to my wife when we arrived home for the box had already arrived. Her question being why 5 pounds? The aquarium we visited was very fascinating. So many different types of sharks and stingrays and manta rays were very fascinating. I learn something new about a few of the fish that have barbs on the back of their bodies at the junction of their tail and body. This is used to ward off fish that tried to eat them by slicing the skin of the inside of the mouth or the outside of the fish. This is something new I did not know and it was quite fascinating. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience and I recommend it for anybody who is interested in the Hawaiian Islands.
