This is a rewarding and challenging trip. You should have some experience with hiking and using hiking poles. Good hiking boots or shoes are a must. Hikes build in challenge level, with the last day being a real challenge with some rocky descents into Portovenere. The views were fabulous, and the food was great. The lecturers added a lot to the hiking adventure with information about the culture and history of Cinque Terre and Liguria. You will never get so close to working vineyards! Our trip leader, Frankie, and hike leader, Boris, had entertaining fun teasing each other. The closing dinner at the home of a vineyard owner and winemaker was outstanding – the best I have had.

Much of the hiking is easy-going, but you must be prepared for some intense stairs and rocks, both up and down, on every day that you hike. The landscape and views are stunning. The food is outstanding. Try the antipasto misto seafood appetizer at La Posada in Corniglia. If you are lucky enough to have Franckie as your group leader and Boris as your guide, you are in for a joyful treat.

Unpack only once, settle into a charming small town locale and get ready for an ascending and descending experience that defies description! Add picture postcard vistas, the best of Italy on a plate and you've got Road Scholar's Cinque Terre challenging hiking in a nutshell. Andiamo!

This was a very active and informative program, providing a blend of cultural history, beautiful scenery, good local cuisine and high level hiking. The guides and lecturers were all friendly and knowledgeable.

Enthusiastic, encouraging guides; ebullient, informative lecturers; scenic, historic locales; great seafood, unsual wines; good weather (on the whole); interesting, happy (for the most part) campers--what could be better? Stronger legs, heartier heart, more time left to participate!

This program offers excellent insight into Liguria, Cinque Terra, Carrara marble, viticulture along the steep slopes, regional history, and Italian food. The hiking is difficult to describe, perhaps closest to what the pioneers faced at Donner and Carson passes on the east face of the California Sierras. However, the hikes are short at just 3-4 hours and doable for those in good shape. One is rewarded with great views and espresso bars enroute, not to mention Italian food and wine at the destination.

This is a "Challenging" adventure as RS indicates but you will have breathtaking views as you catch your breath! You MUST be in good physical condition for this journey; most of your companions will be. I was so impressed by the stamina and fitness of my friendly companions of all ages. Hiking poles are a must. Descents as well as ascents are steep and rugged, often slippery. The meals were delicious - for me the standouts were at Colonnata - a delightful ancient town by Carrara- which was a sumptuous Italian "dim-sum" lunch, dinner at the vineyard with our charming host, and lunch in the lovely and historic city of Sarzana. I enjoyed the talks about local history and culture we had on 4 evenings. This is a trip with little downtime. I highly recommend it for active travellers.

Program is delightful but be prepared for fairly steep ascents and descents and rugged terrain for hiking. Trekking poles are really a must, especially for rugged descents. Views are fantastic. History of the region is very interesting. Be prepared to put on pounds with many Italian type -many course -dinners.

Spectacular views, should be physically fit to do this...alot of steps, rocky terrain, definitely need hiking boots and polls. Busy program with not alot of 'down time'...very nice and varied group...a trip of a lifetime for me.

This is a wonderful experience. The guides and food are absolutely first class. Every meal is exceptional. My only advice is to train; the trails are challenging. Bravo, Road Scholar!

The hiking trip to the Cinque Terre was wonderful. I loved the hiking itself, the accommodations, the helpfulness and expertise of our group leader and hiking guide. I appreciated the gluten-free options that were provided for me. The filed trips were varied, and interesting. The use of listening devices greatly aided the experience by making it easy to hear the group guide with being on his heels.

This is a terrific well organized operation. From the minute we landed in Pisa and a Mercedes sedan took us to the beautiful Royal Sporting Hotel until our delectable farewell dinner I felt as a"first time scholar" I had nothing to worry about. Our guides were delightful, kind, and caring. The whole group seemed to get along well with each other and we learned a lot about this pristine area. This was not the easiest hike for me, but our guide, Boris, lent me his poles to help me. The food and lodging was beyond my expectations for a medium priced tour. I will be taking a tour again in the spring to Africa with Roads Scholar

Road Scholar is doing a fantastic job providing exceptional programs to 'hostile elders'. I put 3 programs together for the first time with each one providing different places and activities. One week in the streets/museums of Paris; one week spent in Cinque Terre for walking/hiking; 1 1/2 week Island Hopping in Greece. I enjoyed them all. Coming from the west coast, I dread long flights to Europe. The 3 trips were all fairly priced, plus the savings from the air fare. The adventure, experience, education attained, incomparable to none.

This trip exceeded my expectations. Scenery breathtaking, food and wine outstanding and meeting fellow travelers very interesting and fun. Would thoroughly recommend this trip as long as you can hike up the equivalent of a 100 story building several days.

Cinque Terra and our guides were wonderful. Do make sure you're an experienced hiker before signing up for this trip. Even if you're a good walker, make sure you are comfortable walking on rocky or muddy paths at a steady pace.
