Road Scholar
Program #13171RJ
17 Days | 16 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

It's a very well planned trip. We, as the traveler, almost don't need to worry anything prior to taking off. That is that there is no surprise as to something we did not bring and well needed. My evaluation had already sent. But here I still like to mention two things, 1. Having an assistant trip leader from back home to accompany us every step of the way is a fantastic idea. Specifically Mr. Robert Kaiser's stayle is a welcome one. He is patient, warm and very knowledgeable of that area. We were lucky to have him. 2. Invited to a local family in Denmark. We get to know Denmark's life style, cultural background, etc.. in a different capacity, more than a flyer can do. I thank you for the program well done. Lily Liu

I recommend this program with no reservations. We heard that this particular program will not be given next year. I hope it will be continued in the future. The cruise programs to Scandinavia were of no interest to me, but this one allows participants to experience the countries in more depth.

This program provides a brief overview of the culture and governance of four Scandinavian countries: Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

This tour has a great mix of rural and urban experiences. It also uses a mix of boat, train, and coach transportation. The lecturers were very knowledgeable. It was delightful.

The True Spirit of Scandinavia - an excellent program for those interested in all aspects (history, arts, social/welfare systems, etc.) of the four countries that comprise Scandinavia. Knowledgeable and interesting leaders, many outside performers to entertain by song and dance, visits to fascinating museums, artisan shops, gardens and churches and beautiful scenery while travelling between locations.

This Scandinavian tour was true to its description. The local leaders were knowledgeable and all (except one) was personable. The background historical information provided by ROAD Scholar was comprehensive. Most of us would have preferred that lectures focus on contemporary issues. A handout, as we received in Finland, could have shortened down the historical presentations. The lectures on art, music, and literature were particularly good as well as the local groups’ evening entertainment, such as the Norwegian folk dancers. The folk high schools provided comfortable (although basic) accommodations. The food, served in buffet style, was tasty and plentiful. Wireless internet was available everywhere although not usually in our rooms. We appreciated laundry facilities at all the schools. We also appreciated having 4 or 5 days in each place so that we could explore the area in depth. The visit with the Danish families in their homes was a highlight of the tour. We did wish that ROAD Scholar had suggested in the preparatory materials to bring a gift from home for the family. (We scrambled to buy something for the family on the day of the visit!) The field trips were interesting and related to the lectures. Local guides were terrific! The listening devices proved to be very helpful. We were given an appropriate amount of free time in the cities to explore our own interests. Our program assistant Bob was wonderful. Not only was he fun and very knowledgeable about Scandinavia, he also provided special assistance to those who needed it. Although naturally we enjoyed certain people more than others, cliques did not form. Since we have not done much group touring previously, we don't have a good basis for comparison, but the ROAD Scholar program seemed to have attracted individuals who wanted to learn as well as sightsee. We were happy to find a tour that allowed us to do both!
