This was a wonderful trip, particularly because we had an opportunity to see big cities and famous sites as well as visit rural villages and see how life is for so many million Chinese people. The activities were varied and interesting, from paper making to amazing acrobats to learning about harvesting and curing tea. Our program guide, Hui, was outstanding. She was informed, energetic and had a great sense of humor. She went out of her way to insure that things ran smoothly and that participants' needs were me. Thank you Road Scholar for a wonderful adventure.

Take this trip if you are ready to stretch your mind and your comfort zone! My learning curve went through the roof! We were able to see the dichotomy of China today - from the communal rice paddies in the villages to the amazing sky scrapers of the cities! With the amazing skill of our guide we learned where China has been and where it is going!

This was my third visit to China in the past thirty years, the first as a tourist rather than on business, and far more enjoyable than I anticipated. My favorite part was the visit to the mountain areas where I saw the China from thirty years ago and its stark contrast to the modernized major cities. Undoubtedly what made the trip so interesting was our incredible Guide. I'd recommend her and the trip to everyone who wants an interesting and educational experience.

I am so glad that I chose the China trip that covered both cities and the remote areas of the minority people. It was an opportunity to see the rapid changes taking place. It was also on opportunity to meet some Chinese people in their country and to get a better understanding of their values and beliefs. Everyone ask me what the most significant site was and that is impossible to answer, they were all so awesome and unlike the things that I have seen before. I was disappointed that the audio package did not include neckloops to help me hear with my hearing aids. This is probably an insignificant point for most people but for me it was a very big problem.

I am urging friends to sign up for this trip to the the rural region. Changes are occurring rapidly! The trip exceeded my expectations. The best part of the program was our young and intelligent guide “Hui” She is extremely knowledgeable about the China’s rich and extraordinary history. Special praise also goes to our regional guides, Mike and Helen. Thoughout our trip, they guarded our safety and treated us like family. I was inspired by the energy and spirit of the Chinese youth and in awe of the elder generation who have survived unimaginable challenges. Road Scholar never disappoints!

If you wish to experience the people and culture of China and learn all you can then look no further than this trip. It is well planned and every detail is taken care of for you. Our guide "Hui" is an authentic person who puts her heart into making all participants comfortable. She is seasoned and insightful and I learned much from her wonderful talks. Experience for yourself Chinese history and the infectious spirit of the Chinese people coming alive daily on the streets of urban and rural China. The Yangtze boat ride alone was worth the trip along with tour of the Three Gorges Project. The music and culture of minority peoples was brought to life. The Great Wall, Terra Cotta Warriors and tomb (Ozymandias came to mind) and Three Gorges (for me, River Cultures, "Homo-Potamus") were enlivened with discussion with thoughtful co-participants. We loved the inventive landscaping and the cities where every big building is its own light show. In Shanghai I'd recommend a night trip to the Bund be added just to jostle among enthusiastic youth who bring a joyful spirit and to see amazing lights on buildings and boats. We are not well traveled but every detail is handled so don't think twice. You will love this trip. Definitely worthwhile. Gets my highest rating.

I really enjoyed this program. I recommend it for people who would like to see the "greatest hits" destinations but also get a little off the beaten path - all in a relatively comfortable trip.

I heartily recommend the China Today tour - 21 days in both rural and urban China. Our group leader, Hui, was a delightful, thoughtful and well-educated leader of our small group and helped make the trip the great experience it was. I have an entirely different view of the Chinese people, culture and history than I did before taking this tour. I am looking forward to booking my next tour with Road Scholar.

My first RS program and new to international travel. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of historical, architectural and cultural experiences. Gave me deeper perspective of the Chinese cultural development and understanding of my own. The Chinese people I encountered were open, warm welcoming, especially if one greets them with a smile. This has been a great first trip for me and probably sets a high bar. Sucess of this trip was possible because of Xianghui Liu. Friendly, organized, knowledgeable, funny.

This was a most spectacular trip for many reasons: the sites and people, our very knowledgeable and caring guide--Xianghui Liu--and the other participants, with whom we had many fascinating conversations. Not only did we see some of the cities and countryside of China, but we had the wonderful experience of visiting the homes of at least four different people. I loved this trip!

If you want to see the scale and scope of China's cities today, as well as the flavor of its villages and the grandeur of its scenery, this trip is a great way to do that. And Melvyn (see comment below) is so right...Xianghui Liu is a fantastic, energetic, unflaggingly sprited guide. One of the best trips we've ever taken.

This program gives you a real opportunity to see and learn about all the changes occurring in China as well as learning about the culture. If all you do is take a tour that flies from city to city you miss a lot. While moderately challenging if you can walk a mile you can do this trip.

This program exceeded my expectations, which were high from the start. We not only saw the usual traveler sites like the Great Wall, Terracota Warriors, and Shanghai. But also were able to experience life in rural villages of only a few thousand people, traveling through mountainous terrain and lush forests. Our group leader Xianghui Liu was beyond spectacular. If you can arrange to travel with her as your guide in China, you should. Xianghui is knowledgable, honest, dedicated, hard working and very caring.

The Hidden Villages tour gives an excellent look at the modern cities, smaller towns, rural areas, and truly hidden (from large crowds and buses) villages. Our guide, Zhang Xue Mei, was the greatest and contributed to the success of this tour, but since she can't be on every tour RS offers, we have to say that RS and their associate in China prepared an excellent tour. There were several performances in cities and in villages, sometimes special by RS for us, and these added greatly to the experience. This was my 20th trip to China, but first on "holiday" (others were on business), so my goal of seeing the changes in China over the past 8 yrs (since last trip) was met. This tour covers Guizhou province and the minority peoples, who were very welcoming and enjoyed meeting us and our taking pictures of them (and showing them the images on the camera screens). I strongly recommend this tour. The Great Wall visit is to what I consider (based on many previous trips) is the best part in the Beijing region. It's not easy walking, but we had lots of help from local farmers. The highways range from very rough to modern and world class. I do have images in a set on flickr and hope they encourage a visit: flickr.com/photos/dslewis Look at the images of the wonderful people and go to China to meet them.
