I highly recommend this experience - interesting, educational and just plain fun! The food on the Fiep is outstanding, barging is a great way to travel, with every member of the staff doing what they can to make the journey smooth and enjoyable - I felt pampered, actually . The many museums and sites we visited were fabulous, the guides and instructors are very knowledgable and friendly. Truly a memory I will savor for the rest of my life!

Outstanding program -- very educational and informative. The food and accommodations on the Fiep were excellent, and the company was great. Looking forward to future travel with Road Scholar.

River cruises on small boats are the way to go! I hope there are many boats like the Fiep in the Road Scholars program.

This was our 18th Road Scholar program, and our first to Europe. We highly recommend it. Our group leader Willemeit was great and the program showed us the people, places, museums and great artwork of the Netherlands. The barge Fiep far exceeded our expectations. The rooms, while small, were comfortable had plenty of storage space. The bathrooms were "tight" but again had storage space and nice touches like glass door showers and heated towel racks. Each room had it's own individually controlled heat and air conditioning. Meals on the Fiep were excellent. The menu was varied, plentiful, well presented and delicious. The entire crew on the Fiep was very accommodating. Cruising through the Netherlands on the barge was a very relaxing way to enjoy the country and get to know our fellow travelers.

Program #19504 The Old Masters:Art Treasures of Holland by River was fun. Lots to see that I didn't know and wonderful art in museums. Joppe was a good guide. Every Dutch person I met speaks English, which helps. The barge was well appointed, and the people on the crew were outstanding. The food was great, good food, well prepared and presented, and I am usually not impressed by food, but I'd go back in a minute if they will feed me.

This was a great trip. The crew of the FIEP was excellent and helpful. The program guide was very good, and the museum guides were exceptionally knowledgable. It was the perfect way to see some of The Netherlands and learn more about the art history of the area. At times I felt like I was walking through a textbook of the art of the Dutch "Golden Age." And, not least, the food was unbelievable!

The program is well designed, with a good mix of museum-going, art education, voyaging on the barge, field trips to other interesting locations. Meals on the barge were excellent. Stairs on the barge are steep & must be used several times a day.

Excellent from start to finish - crew, accommodations, meals and, of course, a wonderful learning experience. We anticipate an other Road Scholar adventure.

I learned more about Holland, I mean The Netherlands, than I knew there was to know. I saw so much beauty, in art, in gardens, on canals, and in city streets. The barge was ship shape and cozy. Side trips included wonderful guides and beautiful sites. And the food was great! I would be happy to live on the Fiep.

Wow! Perfect itinerary including country and city and architecture. Fabulous guide, Joppe, unexpectedly fine cuisine by our barge chef and crew. Lots of walking good for equalizing the extra calories! Best part...the whole purpose of the trip...museums. Small and large, city and countryside. Loved our floating hotel, Fiep. Was very glad I packed gloves and a fleece top. May was not exactly warm and all the layers were most necessary when out and about. If you go and plan to add extra time, suggest you do it at the end since the program gives you a national museum card which is good for a whole year. That way, you can visit other museums, or the same ones again on your extra days. Road Scholar has never disappointed me. Pack light and enjoy this tour by barge.

The small group size and helpful staff made this trip exceptional. We will very likely do similar trips in the future.

This "Old Masters" river barge adventure was a great way to see much of Holland's cities and countryside. This was my first river barge trip, and unpacking once on the barge and having the barge rather than participants move was appealing! The crew of the Fiep was exceedingly efficient and friendly. Meals served were fresh and appealing. Museums were stupendous - especially the Kroller-Muller and Mauritshuis. One regret was the small amount of time we got to spend at the Maurithuis. I'd highly recommending extending a stay at the front or tail end of the program to see more of Amsterdam since limited free time on the last day made visiting more than one Amsterdam site difficult. Tour includes many great lectures and places I'd not have seen on my own. This is a great value for the money, and fellow participants enriched the trip.

Our engaging tour guide Joppe and the friendly crew on the barge Fiep worked hard to make sure everyone had a good trip. The food on the barge is great, and the ship’s size contributes to enjoying time with fellow travelers. The itinerary makes good use of your time, and you’ll see some fabulous art. My friend and I went 5 days early and stayed at the Conscious hotel, ideally located for exploring the city. The hotel is austere, quiet, clean, comfortable, and breakfasts were great. We recommend spending more time in Amsterdam after the barge trip rather than before. This is because you receive a museum pass, good for one year in most museums in the Netherlands (a value of 50 euros plus), as part of your tour, and because the Conscious is steps away from the Connexxion Lijn 197 bus that will take you to the airport for only 5 euros, payable on board. You can just roll your luggage on board, plus the bus runs frequently. There are at least 60 museums in Amsterdam. We enjoyed the Rijksmuseum (get there when it opens and go directly to the Hall of Honor for best viewing of the art everyone comes to see), Museum Willet-Holthuysen, the Stedelijk (excellent crafts and design), Van Gogh, State Archives, and Tropenmuseum. The museum cafes were good, too. We also emailed months ahead to tour the Six Collection – it is free, you just have to request early, and it is extraordinary. Also check what’s playing at the Concertgebouw. We bought tram passes good for four days and thoroughly enjoyed this easy, fun way to get around Amsterdam. Restaurants we liked: Moeders (featuring photos of moms throughout), Seafood Bar, Pannenhoekenhuis Upstairs, and Players. You’ll need reservations for the first two – you can walk to Seafood Bar and take a tram to Moeders. Enjoy!

Delightful trip! It was well planned, always interesting, and with a really nice group of people to travel with. Each day presented us with museum visits and knowledgeable lecturers, explorations of beautiful towns, then home to the welcoming and comfortable barge for a delicious meal prepared by Chef Duncan. I was glad I brought a hat and gloves, but wish I had packed a wool sweater to wear under my light coat.

I had no previous classes in art or art history, but felt that by reading the suggested books I was not lost in our visits to the various museums. While volunteering at a local library, I found that the art book section for children was the best way I could have acquainted myself to the artists whose work we observed. This was a great program particularly using a barge and the canals of Amsterdam.

Our recent barge tour in the Netherlands emphasizing the Dutch Master painters exceeded our expectations. Terrific docents and lecturers--just being back in college, only better. We'd do it all again.

This was a great program and traveling by barge was very pleasant. "Allure" had comfortable cabins, a good chef, and helpful crew. The tulips at Keukenhof gardens were the highlight of the trip -- we were lucky to be there on a warm and sunny day. We stayed two days after the program ended to see more of Amsterdam, and I would recommend this. We did museums one day, and a canal cruise the second. Pack some warm clothes! It was much colder in Amsterdam in May than I had anticipated.

I loved this program. I found barging a great way to travel since you only unpack once and it was only our group on the barge so I got to know participants much better than in the previous 20 programs I have done. The food was excellent and prepared by an onboard chef. The lectures/museum tour guides were very passionate and knowledgeable about Art and the history. A good balance of guided tours and free time in the Art Museums. A unique visit was to a museum devoted to how the Dutch have reclaimed the land which was very interesting. I would highly recommend this program.
