ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

A comprehensive tour of Scotland, from lowlands to the highlands and the islands. A wonderful learning experience that will cover the geography and history of Scotland from the time of the Jacobite uprising up to current times when a decision on devolvement is to be made by the citizens.

Len from Brighton, Mi Number of programs attended: 4 Dates attended 4/30/14 - 5/14/14 This session of "Best of Scotland" did not meet Road Scholar standards. Places visited were great but John Harris, an Englishman, was the leader and primary lecturer. All of his lectures and bus commentaries were read word for word from a prepared script or books on Scotland indicating a superficial knowledge of the country. We learned very little of the Scottish people, their culture, flora & fauna or geology (lots about the Jacobites and the middle ages). The tour did not use local experts (with one exception) but relied on John and he on middle ages history. We took the Best of Ireland immediately after this tour and found it to be outstanding with Irish leaders and local experts at each location visited. This back to back comparison highlighted just how much we missed on our tour of Scotland. The Scotland tour would have been a great trip with different leaders/lecturer.

This truly is "the best of" Scotland with something for everyone: the engineer will enjoy the power station stop while the Scotch aficionado will like the tour of The Glenlivet. English professors will revel at the chance to visit Cawdor Castle and other literary spots. John and Sylvia were superb leaders--excellent lectures and considerate care for all. Lots of bus time but sufficient breaks to stretch your legs. The major drawback was rainy weather, but we persevered.

An unforgettable introduction to highlands, islands, castles and lochs with delightful visits off the tourist path. Read up, bring umbrella and mind the cobblestones underfoot on this adventure! It is invigorating in every sense.

I just returned from Road Scholar Scotland trip. It was wonderful. Our tour guide, Rita Adam, was a delight - so knowledgeable and entertaining. Our logistics manager, Mo Millman, did a great job. Some of our hotels were not the best - but Mo helped us get the best rooms possible. The trip was full of varied experiences and places. We rode a bus (and had a great, safe bus driver), train rides, gondola rides, ferry rides. In addition to hitting all the "normal" Scottish attractions, we managed to do a few unique stops, including a working sheep farm. I would have liked to have more time for our visit to Culloden Battle field. All in all I would highly recommend this trip.

Continued review from Charles and Nancy Bagley:

*Glenlivet Distillery was not worthwhile.

RECOMMENDED IDEAS FOR FUTURE TRIPS:
*There should be one ore more visits to stone age of which there are many in Scotland. For example, the Balnuaran of Clava Cairns is a famous and extensive site only one mile from Culloden Battlefield.
*We wish we could have heard more bagpipes!
*We really would have liked to have one optional hike in the Highlands--one to three hours.
*Consider a visit by boat to Staffa Island and Fingals Cave.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
*All hotels had adequate to very good food.
*Scotland was hit by a rare stretch of very hot weather. There was no AC in any hotel.
*Glasgow Copthorne--good location and beds. Very expensive laundry service.
*Oban Bay Hotel--very good location on waterfront. Food service very slow and hard beds.
*Fort William Ben Nevis Hotel--out on edge of town--no shops in area. Hard bed. Good, inexpensive laundry service.
*Tulloch Castle--pleasant big room. Very small shower enclosure in slippery tub with no rubber mat--dangerous! Good bed.
*Pitlochry--Atholl Palace Hotel--very good room and bed. Extensive, beautiful grounds.
*King James, Edinburgh--good location. Hard bed and very weak coffee.
