Road Scholar has great programs in so many places, and is a great source for us senior travelers. It is especially great to see places and learn about them while enjoying them.

This is a great way to get to know Hawaii - its people, its history, its geology and botany. Its nice to stay in the same place for 4 nights each stop. We saw more of Hawaii on this trip than many in our son in laws family who live in Hawaii have seen. We came home with a list of places we would like to go back to. Took the advise of an earlier reviewer to come a couple of days early to adjust to the time difference. Thats a good thing to do. I would suggest getting your hands on the movies Blue Hawaii, Jurrasic Park and the Descendents before you go if you can because you will see where parts were filmed.

An excellent program those wishing for greater knowledge of Hawaii. Learn of the cultural richness of this civilization from the ancient mariners who navigated by the stars and the 'feel' of the ocean, to the Hawaiian superman who lassoed the sun, to the cane field workers and coffee cultivators, to language, dance, and music, to modern day tourism while experiencing the beauty of lush flora and mountain peaks of its volcanic origins. Follow the footsteps of the great Kamehameha as he fought for a unified kingdom. Group leader Susan McGovern is a superb source of knowledge in both ancient and modern. Her gift in Hawaiian language and traditional chant open windows for deeper learning and appreciation of Hawaiian culture. Excellent learning experience.

This is a wonderful program for people who are interested in learning about 1. the history of the Polynesians in Hawaii and the impact of the missionaries and other European and Americans, 2. the impact of that history on contemporary Hawaii political and social issues and the current culture of the islands, 3. the geology of the islands, 4. the botany and zoology of the islands. The team leaders were great, the external consultants and experts were very interesting, and the places visited were very fun! Just a suggestion; if you take this tour, consider using a free day to take a helicopter tour. It was a spectacular part of our trip. It is expensive, but was a highlight of the trip. Go for a doorless chopper if you are a photographer and make sure that in making your reservation you will get a door seat. Also see if the chopper firm will make a video of your trip available. It is a wonderful addition!
